I waited tables for 10 years. The one table we all dreaded getting was a group of women. When the check comes, they’ll pull out their calculators to figure their split, then leave change on the table.

Typical etiquette: It is customary to pay for whomever you invite to dinner.... unless separate checks are understood in advance. However, if you are not paying, you don't bring an uninvited guest. Obviously, in large dinner parties, one fully expects separate checks.
