【Wouldn’t Having a Performance Engineer from Formula E Bring an Advantage?】 Sky Germany asked Toto whether Ant had an advantage because his side of the garage has a Performance Engineer with a Formula E background. Toto dismissed the idea, saying both sides have complete access to each other’s data... and tools. But while data and tools can be shared, can experience, judgment, and modeling expertise really be shared as well? That engineer is Stéphane Folio, who previously worked as a Performance Engineer in Nissan Formula E, specializing in energy management, chassis control strategy, vehicle control strategy, the Driver-in-the-Loop simulator, and vehicle dynamics. He joined Mercedes F1 in 2025—the same year as Ant. Why is Formula E experience so valuable under the 2026 regulations? Because after the first ten races, we have already seen that a significant part of a car’s performance is determined by when energy is harvested, when it is deployed, how the state of charge is managed, and how the software calculates and controls that deployment. This may also explain why the gaps between some teammates who were far apart last season have narrowed significantly this year—or even been reversed. Formula E uses a spec battery and several standardized core components, meaning teams cannot rely on hardware alone to create a major advantage. As a result, performance is heavily centered on powertrain efficiency, energy management, control strategies, and software calibration. Engineers spend years optimizing exactly how much energy to recover in each corner, how much to deploy on every straight, and how to recalculate the entire energy strategy after safety cars, slipstreaming, or changes in race position. In many ways, Formula E is a championship where performance is heavily defined by software and energy strategy—experience that overlaps remarkably well with the key technical challenges of the 2026 F1 regulations. Mercedes itself also competed as a factory team in Formula E, winning two Drivers’ Championships, one Teams’ Championship, and one Teams’ runners-up finish. So wouldn’t assigning an engineer with exactly this kind of background to Ant’s side of the garage be a resource advantage in itself? Toto says both sides can see the same data. But seeing the same data does not mean having the same people, the same experience, or the ability to reach equally fast and equally accurate conclusions. "F1 has become very popular. what do you think about this change?" lando: "formula one in 2019 was just a very closed sport. you really didn't see much about the people, the drivers, the mechanics, the engineers. you really just saw the show on tv. you saw the racing, and really that was about it. now formula one is a lot more open. there's a lot more fans in the races and paddock. everything i do now, people see. it's on tv, netflix, different series, youtube, it's on every piece of social media, which allows it to grow in a much better way. and i think you see some more fans now that love the people, they love the drivers. they can understand more and relate more to the personalities of each driver in formula one. because it was a very male dominated sport. now most of my fans actually are female and that's an amazing thing that we're able to attract and bring in a younger generation, because they are the future of formula one, and also more variation. so it's a pleasure to be part of that journey"

After a lifetime dedicated to racing, 2026 will mark my final season as a professional racing driver. Not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a new chapter. Motorsport has been my life for as long as I can remember. It gave me discipline and grit before I knew why I needed them, and purpose in moments when the road ahead was far from clear. From the suburbs of São Paulo to Monaco, racing shaped my life in ways I could never have imagined. It changed me profoundly as a driver, as a person, as a father, and as a human being. I gave everything I had to this sport, and in return, it gave me a life beyond anything I could have dreamed of. I am deeply grateful to my family, who supported me from day zero. Every sacrifice, every difficult decision, every moment away from home since I was 17 years old, every victory, and every defeat was carried together with them. Without their love, patience, and belief, none of this would have been possible. I have a wonderful wife and children who helped me make this decision. What if you could visualise how electricity flows from a wind farm in Scotland to your home in London? Ok it's not quite that simple, but it got me thinking that there must be a way of visualising the complexity of the electricity transmission grid in Great Britain. This is my first attempt… What you're seeing are the real power lines and substations on the transmission grid using OpenStreetMap data. The real connections between each substation are found using PyPSA-Eur as well as calculating the "electrical distance" or impedance between each substation. This is my incredibly basic and naive way of attempting to show the "speed" at which the energy is moving through the network, where the bottlenecks are, etc. I know it's not as simple as this, but it's a first attempt so… 😉 I've also added a way to pick any substation in the network and show how electricity pulses through the rest of the network from that point. This is the magic sauce that really brings to life how much infrastructure electricity has to pass through to get from point A to point B. Of course this isn't really what happens, and there's no demand to soak up the energy. However I think it still serves as an interesting visual of how complex the network actually is and the distances involved to get energy from one side of the country to the other. What do you think? Is this worth exploring further?

Billy Monger: Lewis is so experienced in the world of Formula One. He knows when an update turns up on the car, whether it's going in the right direction or not. And actually, you know last season and before that with Mercedes, there was all those sort of conversations where Lewis was trying to push the team in [a] direction with the car, the team were pushing back against Lewis and they didn't exactly make loads of progress. I think Lewis with his experience is going to be really vital to push Ferrari in the right direction and to try and win a championship with them. Even if it's not himself, if he doesn't have that raw pace Charles Leclerc and him I think that that team mate dynamic they've got there is really impressive - F1 British GP 2025 -

I got a smart meter recently and saw you can download a HDF file with the data so I had the idea of writing a script that could parse that and show the data in a useful manner. However I discovered that someone has already done this and done a really good job on it. The video explains how it works. I got a smart meter recently and saw you can download a HDF file with the data so I had the idea of writing a script that could parse that and show the data in a useful manner. However I discovered that someone has already done this and done a really good job on it. The video explains how it works. The objection by the representative of India to Pakistan's mention of Jammu and Kashmir in the Arria Formula meeting was not surprising to us. India, as a party to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, has actually refused to implement the Security Council resolutions on this dispute, and has even refused to cooperate with the United Nations, including the good offices of the Secretary-General, and with all those mechanisms that form part of Chapter VI. As I stated in my statement, Kashmir is an international dispute. It is on the agenda of the Security Council. It was never a part of India, and it is not, and cannot be, part of India — because this was the core question at the heart of these Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. The purpose was to determine the status of this territory: whether it wishes to be part of India or Pakistan. The most interesting Scottish election commentary yesterday from Ailsa Henderson. Some good pointers for what the “independence majority” should do, at least in terms of tone, next: “I’m not talking about the rights and wrongs of holding a referendum or of independence, but just how people react to the issue. And we pick up in the data frustration about the way in which the constitutional issue has pushed other issues off the agenda. We absolutely see that in the data. But one thing we also see is that the Scottish electorate is much less nostalgic than the English electorate. And the same is true in Northern Ireland as well. And the thinking is that by having these important debates about our constitutional future, yes, they may well crowd out debates about how to improve education or how to improve health. But they also do shift our temporal focus from thinking about the glory days that we used to have to thinking about how can we build a different future. And regardless of what side of the constitutional debate you’re on, that shift in temporal framing does change the mindset. As a result, the Scottish electorate is also much less angry than the English electorate…”

Schatz: This bill will kill 300,000 jobs in wind and solar per year. We're going to lose out on $450 billion in capital as thousands of projects go under. And because of that, we're going to generate about 500 gigawatts less energy in the next decade. The 500 gigawatts less energy in the next decade is pretty much exactly the amount of energy that we're going to need to meet rising demand. We are going to have energy shortages as a result of this legislation. Energy demand is soaring for the first time in decades, largely, not exclusively but largely because of A.I. data centers. And our best chance of meeting it in the next few years is with wind and solar, not oil and gas, even nuclear and geothermal are going to take awhile.
