Microsoft goes Megahard on AI. It's fairly clear that "Copilot for X" is now going to be Microsoft's third major strategic shift: 80s-00s: Windows and Office @BillGates @Steven_Ballmer 2010s: Azure and Bing @satyanadella @kevin_scott 2020s-30s: Copilot @ashtom ??? This is it. This is Microsoft's Endgame.

Developers freaking out. IMO this is an overreaction. There is no upper bound to human desires. As technology obsoletes old jobs, new jobs arise. My job didn't exist 10 years ago. This laptop I'm typing on wasn't conceivable 10 years ago. We adapt. We shift goalposts. We want everything faster better safer cheaper. Get ready for Software 3.0 to 100x your value - we've just invented a new engine... but you're the only ones who know how to turn it into planes, trains, and automobiles.

@ashtom - My career was answering hard engineering questions; the 'all knowing' guy on staff - I quit due to overwhelm, barely getting to do coding myself - A year later; GPT-4 is servicing exactly that need! - Imagine the industry-wide productivity boost from freeing up seniors' time!

@ashtom These days are so hard for AI startups. 100 startups in this space are suddenly out of business. Those startups were providing chatGPT in VS CODE and not it will be provided by GH Copilot, who has access to more advanced GPTs than the market

@ashtom Weird timing, I cancelled copilot this morning because GPT-4 is just so much better. Even though I (mostly) loved the in-editor experience, felt unnecessary to pay for both This clearly changes things... very exciting!!
