Wow. The difference in flicker is insane between these three bulbs I had lying around (LED, CFL, Incandescent). This is at 1/6th speed. Your brain does not like the crap LEDs.

Our screens flicker like crazy. I developed a "superpower" after a bad concussion a few years ago & could see the flicker. Just like your slow video! Couldn't tolerate screens for over a year. Now use BENQ monitors & limit screen time. Incandescents only & many outdoor breaks.

Very interesting. Glad to hear you’ve found something that works. Those concussion symptoms can be so odd.

Sure can. Became a whole field of research for me. Which hurt my brain LOL. So much misinfo out there. Lots of culling, but discovered many helpful techniques and a couple great brain supplements.

Isn't it better to just buy flicker free leds than incandescents?

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

Pros: cheaper electricity, flicker even less than incandescents (e.g. Sylvania Truwave) Cons: most will disrupt sleep more than incandescents due to emission spectrum

@sherkhantx Solution: dont sleep with the lights on

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

@sherkhantx Most people don’t sleep with them on. And unfortunately, that wouldn’t solve the issue anyway.

Can someone explain the charts under the bulbs. I get they’re use of the color spectrum of the bulb, but what’s it supposed to mean? What’s the chart of the sun?

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

The charts show relative intensity at different wavelengths (colors) of light. I’ve attached a chart which is close to midday sun from @daylightco’s blog Perceived spectrum emitted by sun changes a lot throughout the day (a lot more red and infrared in the morning/evening, more UV and blue at midday) Basically the blues are a lot more stimulating (typically see at midday), and there are other effects of different colors across the spectrum, so it can be helpful to see a light’s emission spectrum when deciding what bulb you want to be exposed to all day Lmk if any of that wasn’t clear

OuterChowder 的头像
OuterChowder10 个月前

@daylightco Makes sense. In terms of effects on the human body, esp re:LEDs, is it spectrum or flicker that have the adverse effects?

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

@daylightco Both. Flicker = eye strain, headaches, fatigue, worsens migraines in some. High blue at night = circadian disruption, melatonin suppression. There are also known benefits to red/infrared you’d miss out on if you’re never exposed to those.

Going to test some, but IIRC they have a lot less flicker than some of the crappy LED bulbs. If they do flicker much, it’s most likely to happen on dimmer settings. If you set your phone to record slow motion at 240fps, you should be able to tell.

@BasedPainter I tried on my Philips Hue. I can’t see any flicker at 240fps I’m in UK (50hz if that makes any difference?) 🤔

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

@BasedPainter Cool. I've looked into the Hue a little more. They're a lot less prone to flicker (around 1000hz vs. 100-120hz for crappy bulbs like the one I tested in the video)

David Daines 的头像

Totally. Some BenQ monitors flicker a lot less, so they can be a good alternative to reduce eye strain. Or, for a flicker & blue free tablet computer, check out @daylightco

Since when do LEDs even have red in them. That’s surprisingly more balanced than I thought spectrum wise. Incandescents still superior

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

Yes, it is not quite what you’d expect. Generally these bulbs contain all blue LEDs, coated with phosphors to change the emission spectrum.

FireWrench 的头像
FireWrench10 个月前

@Dolphins19845 How does the Purple street lights even happen? Which phosphor fails?

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

@Dolphins19845 The phosphor coating is a mix of phosphors. The purple you see is the result of the blue LED light (its true color) blending with the remnants of the phosphor layer that is damaged or has started coming off.

Is the advantage of less power usage really meaningful, if you add up electrical usage for lighting in the home, it's may be one of the lowest when compared to motors, compressors, electric stoves and dryers... ?

reiver 的头像
reiver10 个月前

LED seems like a design problem. Add component to hold charge to stabilize flicker. We have developed the crystals for all spectrum with LED, just need to bring the price point down which my understanding is on the way. Seems we have the engineering part solved, just need scale.

David Daines, what about the flickering incandescents some comments mention? What’s their flicker rate compared to good LED’s? Maybe nobody’s studied flicker of incandescents powered by AC current, because they’re too busy hating on LED’s?

David Daines 的头像
David Daines10 个月前

Less flicker than incandescents in truly high-quality LED bulbs, but many (myself included) prefer the incandescent emission spectrum (very little blue, good amount of red & NIR)

Interesting. They mainly focused on pure white, a few different blues, and a little green-exposing rats for 6-72h. Would be cool to see with commercial LED bulbs.

Grok 的头像
Grok10 个月前

In the EU, including Sweden, general incandescent bulbs have been phased out since 2012 for energy efficiency reasons, with bans on production and import. Specialty or exempt types (e.g., for appliances) may still be found. You can buy them online from international sites like Ubuy or eBay, which ship to Sweden, but check customs for any import restrictions. Prices start around 100-200 SEK for packs.

I've been recommending incandescent light bulbs. But what about your kitchen? Your bathroom? Incandescents don't fit most of those fixtures. The answer: halogen bulbs. Glen Jeffery, UCL: "In the kitchen I have got a halogen lamp. When you get up in the morning and you're spending that 45 minutes doing stuff — there's a halogen lamp there on at the right time." Halogen is a type of incandescent. Almost identical full spectrum output. Infrared included. The key difference: Halogen bulbs contain halogen gas that redeposits tungsten back onto the filament as it evaporates — longer lifespan, same full spectrum output. The result: longer lifespan than a standard incandescent, higher operating temperature, and slightly whiter light — but still full spectrum with significant infrared output. Like incandescents, halogen bulbs have been phased out and banned across much of Europe and the UK. But they can still be found — Amazon, specialist lighting suppliers, some hardware stores still carry stock. And if you can dim them: "If you just turn the power down — which increases the amount of infrared light — the bulb will last almost forever." Jeffery's team ran a study in a windowless UCL building under harsh LED lighting. They replaced desk lamps with 40W incandescent bulbs — not aimed at eyes, just supplementing the environment. Two weeks later: color perception improved significantly — more than anything they'd seen with long-wavelength LEDs. They removed the bulbs. Came back six days later. The improvement was maintained. A month later — still maintained. Jeffery: "We are suffering from a suppression of our physiology via mitochondria that is just being produced by the built environment." The fix doesn't have to be complicated. Incandescent bulbs where you can. Halogen in the kitchen and bathroom where you can't. Indoor lighting environment sorted.
