XB-1 successfully completed its 4th–and fastest–test flight today. Here’s a view from the T-38 chase plane keeping up with XB-1, which reached a max speed of Mach 0.617 (313 KIAS)–more than halfway to breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1. Read more:

XB-1 Flight Four ✅ Very successful flight this morning. Airplane performed great, with a new top speed of Mach 0.6 and 2.5G maneuvers. Only lowlight: FES didn’t cooperate for M0.6 test point. So we’re pulling it out and shipping to vendor. Maybe back in the air in 3-4 weeks.

On October 12, 1964, during its third test flight—and first, 20min sustained supersonic run—the XB-70 Valkyrie lost approximately 15% to 25% of its white paint, which peeled off in large patches. The, aerodynamic friction caused temperatures to exceed the paint's bonding capabilities, exposing the stainless steel skin. To resolve the issue, the first prototype (AV-1) was completely stripped and repainted with a thinner, more durable coat using improved paint technology. Subsequent flights, including those reaching Mach 3, did not suffer from the same widespread.😎

XB-70 blowing tires on landing. This "interesting" looking bird from 60s never went into production but could reach speeds over Mach 3 and altitudes of 70,000 feet with a delta-wing design and six jet engines. The data from test flights and materials influenced the B-1 program. 🤘😎

Five passenger airplanes reached 800mph (1.04 MACH) after strong winds pushed the planes to insane speeds. One plane was a Virgin Atlantic flight from Washington to London. The plane hit 802mph which is 40% faster than a typical cruising speed (575mph). The winds reached speeds of 265mph at 35,000ft above Washington. The Virgin Atlantic flight arrived in London 45 minutes early. American Airlines Flight 120 from Philadelphia to Doha also experienced the strong winds and hit a whopping 840mph. CaptKyle
