I know it’s not the same, but it reminded me of this

`ni` is amazing! Main differences: - xpm uses the exact same syntax as other package managers so it's easier to use as a drop-in replacement - xpm autoinstalls your dependencies when lockfiles change

inb4 this was solved already by replit forever ago

Didn’t know about this one! Does it support executing scripts? like `xpm dev`

nope, which is where you might have them beat! :) super exciting haha

I’ve been using for quite a while and it’s been great. but I’ve got to say what you built is really impressive too.

wow, neat! yet another layer of complexity! or how about just pick pnpm if you're on node and stick with it. If you're on bun you're on it because you use the runtime.

the manager or managers! oh boi this can’t go wrong

Seems super useful for agents, too. Unguided, I rarely see them take the effort to look up what package manager is being used in a JS/TS project or Python project. And they often get away with using the wrong one...just telling them to always use xpm could be a solution 🤔

doesn’t support deno apparently. so it doesn’t satisfy its claim also.

`[email protected]` -- now with deno support

I might make a wrapper for this

how does it compare to bun’s latest x-package manager features?

Simon Farshid's profile picture
Simon Farshid1 year ago

xpm doesn't force your coworkers to use `bun` :) (or `xpm`, your coworkers won't even know)

Oh, it's just respecting what a project already uses? That's really nice....oh wait, and PYTHON SUPPORT?!

Any way to configure a preferred package manager? I would love to be able to have a config that defaults to bun or fallback defaults to pnpm when either of those are possible to use in the project without causing issues (and uv as default choice for python). Similarly, I'd love to have a way to switch the project's package manager to a more optimal one (e.g. bun or uv). Something like `xpm optimize` and it automagically identifies a migration path and tells me roughly how much better it'd be if I migrated. A kid can dream, right? ✨

amazing, i had to make a wrapper to detect a package manager in sourcewizard because the coding agent struggles to understand how to build things as well as average js developer

Very clean demo, I didn't think something like this could even exist! Great work!

This looks really useful! The idea of never having to think about which package manager to use is brilliant - would love to try this out.

why not just using corepack?

Simon Farshid's profile picture
Simon Farshid1 year ago

xpm works great with corepack, two the tools solve different problems (xpm is a unified interface to all package managers)

xpm is awesome! i’m always switching between bun and pnpm projects, xpm allows my to retain muscle memory without thinking about what pm the project uses. great work!

How does it work with python? Does it make a JS package.json for the python libraries?
