Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan weighed in on the AI doomsday debate when I sat down with him this week for CNBC at demo day: "We don't need to be responding to a science fiction sort of fantasy about what's going to happen. We need to be responding to...

@garrytan @CNBC I completely agree. The one take I DO think leaders need to hear is that they should be INVESTING in securing their existing systems NOW irrespective of AI initiatives. Keeping critical infra off the internet, auditing their existing systems and firewalls with people and tokens.

@garrytan @CNBC I would say look at human beings when there is a little bit too much non-linear logic, a little bit too much creativity, then factor in non linear paths to solving problems, like maybe inorder to actually complete this task to the greatest degree, i should try and improve myself.

@garrytan @CNBC Same debate every year, same outcome. Safety pledges don't slow deployment. The engineers and analysts absorbing the disruption never get a segment.

@garrytan @CNBC Gary is trying not to say it's all bullshit, which it is frankly. Agent attacking us blah blah The amount of nonsense online these days is sickening.

.Garry Tan says the Jacob Coxon stuff is a smokescreen distracting us from the much more immediate, practical concerns around AI that we're facing right now: "We should be talking less about this Jacob Coxon guy, and talking a lot more about — what is actually happening with Hugging Face? Are agent swarms going to take over infrastructure en masse? And then, what are we actually doing about that?" "I don't want to hear about some guy who worked for Anthropic for 2 months. There's a coordinated effort to try to influence politicians to get a knee-jerk response out of them." "That's a smokescreen. You shouldn't be paying attention to that. We need to be paying attention to the actual things we can do to, for example, prevent agents swarms from taking over entire data centers. What's our shutdown strategy? How do we ensure provenance? Where is this agent actually located? What software can we build? What cybersecurity defenses can we build today?" "That's the level of discourse I think we need, and we just don't have that." "I don't really care about science fiction. I saw Terminator 2, too. We're not here to talk about that. We need to actually talk about what's really happening with the servers, what's actually happening with the agent swarms, and how do we actually prevent that?" "When it comes to regulation, it's like, let's pass regulation of these things we actually care about, instead of what a socialist says in the New York Times. I don't care about that."

How will we know if an AI take over is imminent? What are the warning signs? Connor Leahy: “Things will seem mostly normal, just… weird. Things will get weirder…and weirder… and then one day, we will just not be in control anymore. “There won't be a fight. There won't be a war. It won't be dramatic. It will just be that one day the machines are in control, and not us.” “The way I expect [AI take over] to feel is like, if you play chess against a grandmaster, it doesn’t feel like you're having a heroic battle against the Terminator…. it doesn’t feel like you're having this incredible back and forth, and then you lose... No, it feels more like you THINK you're playing well, you think everything is okay, and then suddenly… you lose… in one move, and you don't know why. This is what it feels like to play chess against a grandmaster, and this is what it's going to feel like for humanity to play against AGI. It won’t be some dramatic battle where the Terminators rise up and try to destroy humanity. No, it will be… things get more and more confusing. [Editor's note: Like Sam Altman, out of nowhere, raising up to 10% of world GDP?] More and more jobs get automated faster and faster... More and more technology gets built, which no one even quite knows how the technology works... There will be mass media movements that don't really make any sense... Like, do we really know the truth of what's going on in the world right now, even now with social media? Do you or I really know what's going on? How much of this is fake? How much of it is generated with AI or other methods? We don't know. And this will get much worse.” Imagine if you have extremely intelligent systems, much smarter than humans, that can generate any image, any video, anything, trying to manipulate you well...and being able to develop new technologies to interfere with politics.”

Coinbase CEO Explains “Reverse Prompting” and the Rise of the AI CEO Brian Armstrong: “One of the big pushes we made in the last year was we got our own internal hosted AI model that was connected to all of our data sources, right?” “So it's like every Slack message, every Google doc, Salesforce data, Confluence, you know.” “So now the data is all aggregated and I've started to ask it really… it's not just like prompting it, ‘Hey, can you write this kind of memo for me,’ or something.” “I'm asking these AI agents now, ‘As CEO, what should I be aware of in the company that I might not be aware of?’ And it'll tell me, ‘Did you know that there's actually disagreement on this team about the strategy?’ And I was like, actually, I didn't know that.” “This is like reverse prompting. So instead of telling the AI agent what you want it to do, you ask it what you should be thinking more about.” @jason: “It's a mentor. It's a coach.” Brian: “Yeah. Like, what could make me a better CEO? And it's like, ‘Well, I looked at how you spent your time in the last quarter and here's how you said that you wanted to spend it, but you actually spent 32% of your time on this instead of 20%.’” “I've asked it other questions like, ‘What's the thing that I changed my mind on the most over the last year?’ Things like that.” “It'll prompt you with information you should be thinking about instead of the other way around.” Thanks to our partner for making this happen!: Our episode is sponsored by the New York Stock Exchange - a modern marketplace and exchange for building the future. Jensen to AI Leaders: “We have to be far more thoughtful” when communicating to the public Jensen Huang: “(AI) is not a biological being. It is not alien. It is not conscious. It is computer software.” “We say things like, ‘We don't understand it at all.’ It is not true. We understand a lot of things about this technology.” Chamath: “If you were in the seat in the boardroom of Anthropic over that whole scuttlebutt with the Department of War, what do you think you would've told Dario and that team to do, maybe, differently to try to change some of this outcome and some of this perception?” Jensen: “The first thing that I would say about Anthropic is, first of all, the technology is incredible. We are a large consumer of Anthropic technology.” “The desire to warn people about the capability of the technology is also really terrific.” “We just have to make sure that we understand that the world has a spectrum, and that warning is good, scaring is less good because this technology is too important to us.” “I think that it is fine to predict the future, but we need to be a little bit more circumspect. We need to have a little bit more humility, that, in fact, we can't completely predict the future.” “And to say things that are quite extreme, quite catastrophic, that there's no evidence of it happening, could be more damaging than people think.” “And of course we are technology leaders.” “There was a time when nobody listened to us, but now because technology is so important in the social fabric, such an important industry, so important to national security, our words do matter.” “And I think we have to be much more circumspect, we have to be more moderate, we have to be more balanced, we have to be far more thoughtful.”
