Yesterday, I decided to do something completely unexpected. For two and a half hours, I stood inside ShopRite and paid for every single person who came through the checkout line. Groceries, household essentials, food for families, whatever they had in their carts, I covered it. What started as a simple act of giving turned into one of the most meaningful moments for me. Dadguy note: Today I am wiped out - exhausted beyond belief. I had prepped all week for some fun Halloween science experiments and demos which were a huge hit. They always end with a pumpkin explosion. I take my job seriously to engage kids in science and make their day fun- but most of all- and above all else - keep their world fun of wonder. A pumpkin explosion is memorable- and it is something that will stick with kids their entire life. I got home wiped out, walked the dogs and opened up an email to find a message from a former student, weeks from graduating a Chem degree with distinction. She saw the explosions on social media, and it brought back memories of my class and she thanked me for the lessons I gave. I’m a tiny cog in society, but sometimes what teachers do cause echos. We say - I believe in you, we say the world is better with you in it, we say learning is joyous, we say I expect you to be the best version of yourself. Those words echo across time.
