@okstate NOOOOOOO. After measurements were taken these cubs were safely returned by researchers back to their den to nurse. During these health check-ups mom is temporarily sedated and observed as well.

Great question. There’s a prolific belief that mothers will abandon young if they smell like humans (especially birds) but that is untrue. Right now the bears a part of this study are still in hibernation, making it safer to observe. Cubs are immediately returned, and the den is monitored while sedation wears off.
