The Eagles cap their opening drive with a terrible route concept on 4th and 4. They try to go to DeVonta Smith on the out route from condensed 2x2 (basically the only thing he ever runs from those looks) and when it isn't there the options on the backside are an out route to AJ Brown that already broke, and a Dig route to Dallas Goedert that is breaking into a safety that isn't conflicted by any other route. Thankfully, AJ Brown and Jalen Hurts bail it out.

3rd and 2 out of the 2-minute warning and Hurts takes a sack. There are plenty of issues here. Personnel-wise, why is your RB3 on the field? Why does Dallas Goedert sit down over the ball against man coverage? The Cowboys are all over the AJ Brown slant route, devoting their hole defender to it, so the middle of the field is wide open if Goedert keeps running. The out route to Dotson is also open, but Hurts is already off of it, fading away as Jordan Mailata and Fred Johnson both get pushed into his lap. Also, what happened to single-high, let it fly? If you show me this look I'm putting Smith and Brown both on vertical routes and living or dying with my 1 on 1 shot.

Both are open, but one of them is definitely in the wrong place. Given that Hurts targets Smith, I would assume Dotson ran the wrong route.

I don't know what the landmark is here, but this just looks like a bad throw from Hurts. Smith is open to the sideline but has to spin around and track the ball over his inside shoulder. Hurt's deep ball was bad last week, and I discounted that due to the weather. But it wasn't on point in this game either. Even the deep catch Smith made later required a dramatic adjustment to the ball and a spectacular catch.

But then the Broncos went to a lot more zone coverage and Brown was blanked (except for 1 more slant against man coverage). Players beat man and scheme beats zone. The Eagles have the players. They don't have the scheme. Again, I have no idea why any team would play any defensive snap that wasn't a 4-man rush with zone coverage behind until the Eagles figure out how to beat it.
