Yeah, I know AJ Brown is open. So is DeVonta Smith. So why does Jalen Hurts make the harder throw to Smith? There are a few reasons: - Since it isn't press coverage, Hurts anticipates pre-snap that the CB on Brown will go over the top instead of just... running into the traffic. He doesn't, but he should have which would have made the throw muddier. Not to mention that Carolina not massively cheating their MOF safety and hole defender to the AJ Brown/DeVonta Smith side is also questionable at best. - His footwork on the drop doesn't really allow him to make the AJ Brown throw. You could argue (and you would probably be right) that he should take a 1 step and check the Brown route before going to the Smith route, but that isn't what happens. Hurts goes through the correct pre-snap process and makes a nice throw for the TD, but I would like to see the dropback keep both routes in play next time.show more

The Eagles cap their opening drive with a terrible route concept on 4th and 4. They try to go to DeVonta Smith on the out route from condensed 2x2 (basically the only thing he ever runs from those looks) and when it isn't there the options on the backside are an out route to AJ Brown that already broke, and a Dig route to Dallas Goedert that is breaking into a safety that isn't conflicted by any other route. Thankfully, AJ Brown and Jalen Hurts bail it out.

3rd and 2 out of the 2-minute warning and Hurts takes a sack. There are plenty of issues here. Personnel-wise, why is your RB3 on the field? Why does Dallas Goedert sit down over the ball against man coverage? The Cowboys are all over the AJ Brown slant route, devoting their hole defender to it, so the middle of the field is wide open if Goedert keeps running. The out route to Dotson is also open, but Hurts is already off of it, fading away as Jordan Mailata and Fred Johnson both get pushed into his lap. Also, what happened to single-high, let it fly? If you show me this look I'm putting Smith and Brown both on vertical routes and living or dying with my 1 on 1 shot.

Targets last year through 5 games: Puka Nacua-62 Chris Olave-54 Ja’Marr Chase-45 Jaxson Smith-Njigba-43 AJ Brown-36 The Patriots have to establish AJ Brown as the center piece of the offense. It will signify to defenses that they have to try to take him out of the game because if they don’t, Drake Maye will throw it to AJ 20 times if they leave him in 1 on 1 with no safety help. Getting AJ Brown going early in the season will then open more holes in the run game, more space for the other pass catchers and most importantly it will give Drake Maye confidence that he has a true eraser and dominant WR. Cooper Kupp splits Quinyon Mitchell and Sydney Brown for a TD. I would like to see Mitchell play this better, but its a pretty bad coverage rep by Brown. He is on the left hash when Stafford flips his hips to align to Kupp and starts to throw. Brown moves 3 steps to the right after Stafford flips to throw.

The Eagles motion Jahan Dotson across the formation and get the Rams to show both man coverage and pressure pre-snap. Both Dotson and Smith run out routes within 3 yards of each other. Both are open, but one of them is definitely in the wrong place. Given that Hurts targets Smith, I would assume Dotson ran the wrong route.

The Final Drive of the Eagles-49ers game exposed the Eagles' major flaws offensively - High School route concepts: Kevin Patullo is calling plays around the weaknesses of his QB. He should be gone ASAP - Jalen Hurts must do a better job of staying in the pocket. He consistently ran out of a clean pocket when his OL was great is pass pro. He was not good - AJ Brown FOLDED - Dallas Goedert and DeVonta Smith showed up - DeVonta dropped the ball on 3rd & 11... he's got to make that catch. The Eagles are operating in the NFL draft as if AJ Brown will be traded. Per: Jeff Darlington “You have to think about what is our team going to look like without AJ Brown if and when we trade him. So if they take a wide receiver? Absolutely com to that conclusion. I also do think though, even if they don’t take a wide receiver, that is not a suggestion that AJ Brown will be sticking around.”

I don't know what the landmark is here, but this just looks like a bad throw from Hurts. Smith is open to the sideline but has to spin around and track the ball over his inside shoulder. Hurt's deep ball was bad last week, and I discounted that due to the weather. But it wasn't on point in this game either. Even the deep catch Smith made later required a dramatic adjustment to the ball and a spectacular catch.

This is a leader of men I’m speaking about, and that right there is not a trait that is easily found in men. So, for him to have it so young and him to recognize what he has in front of him, it speaks volume. Like I said, the fun thing is that he can make any throw. That’s what you wanna see and he does it very easily.”

Patrick Surtain is the best CB in the NFL and AJ Brown beat him in the 1st half. But then the Broncos went to a lot more zone coverage and Brown was blanked (except for 1 more slant against man coverage). Players beat man and scheme beats zone. The Eagles have the players. They don't have the scheme. Again, I have no idea why any team would play any defensive snap that wasn't a 4-man rush with zone coverage behind until the Eagles figure out how to beat it.

This is a great throw on a concept that isn't even that good. No crossing routes, no conflicted defenders. Just a dig route over the middle of the field and a laser beam from a muddy pocket for a big 3rd down conversion
