Soon, we do however need that commercial software support.

@ThePrimeagen My colleague is finally switching to Linux like he knew he always should have.

steam box is going to be $1500 after ram price increases. hardcore gamers may still buy it, but that’s a hard sell over a custom. linux could still win by default because non-gamers are only buying laptops.

Hope so! It really is the best place for developers, gamers, and light users. The last hurdle is the power users… but macOS does exist.

And, you can easily use the best distro by simply installing OpenMandriva (@openmandrivaor). This was my early year resolution: Migrate from Ubuntu 24.04 to OpenMandriva Rock 6.x KDE Plasma on my daily driver (Ryzen 7 9700X 32GB ) & laptop old i3 16GB Successfully completed. 👍

What a surprise, it didn't require imitating "Look and feel."

Roughly doubled this past year... Could definitely be a tough point. Short of mfg support, I don't see it clearing 20-25% though.

My year of the linux desktop was 2001, that year Debian became easier to install than Windows even with all the 11 or 14 CDs.

@cmuratori It's all coming together and I'm glad Valve saw the writing on the wall back in 2012 to prep for disaster. Potentially the Pipewire + Wayland transition landing at the same time isn't ideal but The Year Of The Linux Desktop™️ is upon us!

Year of the linux desktop was 2025. It IS the tipping point, we've seen too much big creators switch and recently jacksepticeye just uploaded a whole rant about windows screwing him up. Based on how you define the year of Linux desktop it might be 2030 but to me 2025 confirmed it

We can only hope, Linux suffers most when it comes to niche windows usage which is where most consumers just give up and stay on Windows, also familiarity, the brand has unwashable footprint.

at this point the game is Linux's to lose basically Windows is by no means doomed or unsalvageable *except for Microsoft* such a huge company, in this economy, can only get money to make it worse

2026, tipping point for the linux desktop, agree. But not including the Steam machine in it. Maybe this got recorded before the RAM price hikes? Because the Steam machine price is still unknown, and the RAM prices can in fact jeopardize the Steam machine viability

If it was going to be the "Year of the Linux Desktop" because "Windows is bad", it would have happened many years ago, nothing to see here.

I don’t think it will be the year of Linux, but the year of UNIX with a sharp rise in Mac users. Apple is releasing a low cost MacBook that is going to be $700 or less, directly competing with cheap Windows laptops. At the same price, why are you still buying windows?
