Times Radio Interviewer (Daniel Finkelstein Daniel Finkelstein): Can I use this with reference to the interview that I did yesterday with my brother? My brother’s a professor at City University; he’s president of the university, and there’s a campaign at the moment going on against one of their professors who was in the Israeli Defense Forces in the 1980s. We were having a discussion about how the university was standing up for the free speech of its staff, and I’d begun to wonder, as I went home reading your book on the tube, whether I’d made a big mistake—because the protest against this professor is really just a coordination exercise, isn’t it? And maybe I’d aided it by talking about it. Me: Oh yes—protests are coordination exercises. They’re designed to make private knowledge common knowledge. So, in a repressive regime, everyone may know that they despise the government, but because criticism of the government is punished, people might keep their opinions to themselves, with a result that they really don’t know what their fellow citizens think. Each one might think that they’re the only ones that are disgruntled, and so they can’t fear standing up to—they fear standing up to oppose the regime, because they can be picked off one at a time. If everyone were to protest at once, no government has the firepower to intimidate all its citizens at once. In a public protest, people can see other people there, and they know that the people there see other people there, and that can give them the strength and numbers to oppose the regime—sometimes by literally storming the palace, or sometimes just bringing the machinery of the state to a halt through work stoppages. But the crucial thing is that they are coordinated. They can only be coordinated if everyone knows that everyone knows that they hate the regime. Daniel Finkelstein: I suppose that social media is making people—is increasing the stock of common knowledge. Me: Social media are making us more connected within certain circles—that is, those who are receiving the same texts and feeds that we are. Don’t buy your significant other something really expensive that they don't even know about, like a diamond necklace, or a watch, or a car, or a boat. How do you know they want that? The worst thing you can do is spend a whole bunch of money and come out of there, open up the box, and say, "Look at this, honey. I bought this for you." And they go, "I hate it." Sometimes it's better to consult with your significant other and buy it together. I know people want the element of surprise. It's a huge mistake, because the surprise to the downside really sucks.

A few days ago Jerod McDaniel shared a quote along the lines of “horses made for war don’t dance well at weddings” I think there are a lot of people like myself that know how plants… or livestock.. or a pasture or even building a house or pouring concrete work. We just want to do what we do. The weather worked out well this year for this. We’re going to be 👍 I could grow about anything, but I like to do it my own way. I sometimes wish I didn’t have to predict or guess what people will do… or markets… and the all the corresponding things that entails. I know you can’t just do your craft, but sometimes you want to just immerse yourself in something you have a more complete understanding of. I watch people like Adam Chappell do this with cotton. Zack Smith come up with farmonius designs Intergrazing livestock. We could do so much cool shit, if only we could just have the local markets, infrastructure… if the average person could have that connection and means to trade with the local farm / farmer that just wanted to just do it…be him or herself Maybe I left you hanging with the main idea here. I think there are a lot of different people who are really good at different things, but many of us have to sand off our edges that give us our edge. I love to think in the lens of the 🌱

Then we go to the stadiums and everyone says “let this be the last time,” we all hold a minute of silence, and then it happens again—why? We have experienced this many times in recent years. A mother waits at home for her child to return, and he never comes back. A mother loses her child because he simply went to do this. Until when will it be a problem what jersey someone wears, which team someone supports, where someone can walk, and what they are allowed to say? We live in the most beautiful country in the world. All of us have a responsibility, each from our own position, to protect sport. Sport is for these children you see here. It is meant to unite people, to fill stadiums and arenas so that we can all enjoy ourselves. The reality is that one team will win and another will lose. One year someone will be doing well, the next year they may not be. Not everyone can win. But the issue is not victory or defeat—the issue is understanding how long young people will continue to lose their lives in the name of the team they support. I don’t know who needs to intervene. I don’t know what needs to be done. I am not the person responsible. I simply felt that I had to say this because we truly play basketball for the people. We want people in the arenas, we want them full—fans of our team and of the others as well. But it is sad and unfair, and everyone needs to reflect on their responsibilities. How much longer? 🐻: but honestly, i still feel like there are so many things nct dream hasn’t shown yet. people often say that when you think of dream, it feels refreshing, and i’m glad we’re known for that. but as someone who does music, i don’t want to stay comfortable with just that image. it might be sad if we’re only performing within that box. sometimes, i want to do music that the fans like, sometimes what the public likes, and sometimes just what we like. in the end, the most important thing is showing a variety of good-quality work. there are so many singers out there, and i want us to stay a team that can’t be replaced. that's my goal (to be a star that burns forever among countless stars) 🥹🥹🥹

But now, the more we try to be close to people, the more we start to worry. We start feeling uneasy, like maybe we can’t do things the same way anymore. We begin to think more carefully: if we go out to eat, should it be somewhere more private? If we meet people, should it be at times when there aren’t many others around? There’s a lot more to consider now, because we really don’t want anything bad to happen. 🐰: But we can never truly know someone’s intentions, whether they’re real or not. And if something were to actually happen one day, the people who would be hurt the most would be our parents, our fans, and ourselves. No matter who it is, we don’t want any artist to have to go through something like this.
