The veto session is over, and the state of Illinois still owes Illinois school districts nearly $5 Billion in undelivered funds. These are the funds that would ensure our students have the resources they need to thrive, like mental health supports, special education programs, safe passage, and more. Every time you think the Chicago Teachers Union couldn't possibly reach a new low, they appear out of nowhere and reach a new low: CPS - Chicago Public Schools passed a budget just yesterday that is so wildly reckless and irresponsible that it very literally risks forcing teachers to go without pay for weeks. Chicago Teachers Union-allied school board members rejected a balanced proposal and instead voted to approve a spending plan that reverses planned spending cuts and intentionally puts the CPS $150 million in the hole. (Non-CTU board members attempted to vote the newer insane budget down). But why would CTU risk their own dues-paying members' paychecks? Oh, that's easy: to manufacture a crisis that brings Governor JB Pritzker and state lawmakers to their knees and pour more taxpayer money in the form of a massive bailout. Every school board seat is on the ballot this November. Chicago Teachers Union-aligned school board members must be held accountable.

Last week, CPS voted for the first time to balance the budget by holding the governor and General Assembly accountable for their skipped payments instead of by punishing students. Despite intimidation and threats from CPS lawyers, 11 board members, including board member Jitu Brown, voted to invest in our students. Brown retold the horror stories of the harm and lives lost due to school closings. We cannot return to the era of school closures. The passed budget amendment demands the state pay the $2 billion it owes to our students and our school communities. But the fight is not over. We need Governor Pritzker to work with Speaker Welch and Senate President Harmon to make good on the state’s debt.

I want to speak directly to San Francisco’s public-school parents and our students. I know many of you are worried about the possibility of a teacher strike that could temporarily close schools—and I want you to hear this clearly from me: our kids come first. As mayor, even though I don’t oversee our school district, I’m deeply committed to making sure our kids get a world-class education—with safe public schools where kids can learn and educators are well supported. It is crucial that our schools remain open. Every day in the classroom matters. I have been in regular contact with both the school district and the teachers union, and I am urging them to keep talking so kids can keep learning. Our working parents can’t afford to stay home if schools are closed. Our special needs students can’t afford to lose access to vital services that help them succeed. Schools are the foundation that makes daily life possible and helps every family in San Francisco thrive. I am also actively working with city departments to ensure we have options for our students in the event that classrooms do close. But I want to make one thing clear—what is best for our students is for the adults to continue discussions at the table so we can keep kids in the classroom. I will continue pushing for solutions that keep our schools open and our students learning. San Francisco’s families deserve nothing less.

Sanctuary City OUT. ICE IN. Defund the CTU. While our children are being used as political pawns during school hours, Chicago families are paying the price for failed leadership and misplaced priorities. Students are not activists. Schools are not organizing hubs. Taxpayers did not consent to their children being pulled into political theater. This is what happens when incompetence is protected, accountability is ignored, and union leadership is driven by radical ideology instead of education outcomes. Anyone continuing to fund or defend this behavior through CTU dues is enabling the problem. Chicago Flips Red will continue to protest the Chicago Teachers Union and apply pressure until federal authorities step in to restore oversight, accountability, and the rule of law. Our kids deserve classrooms — not indoctrination. Our city deserves leadership — not corruption. This does not stop here. 🚨Is the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors about to DEFUND school resource officers to fund more DEI? At a March 2nd meeting, Supervisor Juli Briskman told the county’s DEI department that she hopes the board will not fund a large resource request (elementary SROs), and if that happens, other budget requests like more DEI positions could be funded. The County Administrator already included funding in the proposed budget to fund school resource officers in elementary schools, something Briskman opposes as do most Democrats on the school board like April Chandler and Anne Donohue. On Thursday at 5:15 pm, the Loudoun County School Board is holding a special meeting and is expected to vote on the Sheriff’s proposal to add school resource officers in all elementary schools. Right now, the Democrat majority on the school board is expected to formally oppose the SRO proposal. We’ll keep you updated. Some believe this is being done now so Democrats on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, like Briskman, can make the argument to take the SRO funding out of the county’s proposed budget. “Why fund elementary school SROs if the school board doesn’t want them?” Right now, there are school resource officers in all middle and high schools in Loudoun County. The Sheriff says the county needs school resource officers in elementary schools because of how many calls of service there are at elementary schools and he says SRO’s can protect the most vulnerable kids in the county when seconds count. Elementary school shootings have been on the rise over the past ten years. The sheriff’s office also tells me there are hundreds of instances where SROs have had to leave middle schools to respond to threats at elementary schools each year. The sheriff’s office was told by the school admin last year that if they want school resource officers in elementary schools, they should get the funding first, and then LCPS will talk. But now it appears the school board is moving the goal posts. The sheriff’s office was able to get the funding, but now there’s an effort underway by Briskman and some school board members to pull the funding and prevent school resource officers in elementary schools.

Ontario's schools need more adults. We need more EAs and more educators in our schools to keep students safe and help them learn. Children in Grade 6 were in Kindergarten when the Ford government took office. EQAO scores are on their watch, and this government is failing our kids. That is why Ontario-Liberals are calling on the Ford government to invest $1 billion in new education funding so boards can hire the staff students rely on every day. Students should not have to pay the price for underfunding. It is time to give them the support they deserve.

Algebra is returning to 8th grade public school classrooms in San Francisco—a major step forward for our students and our families. Since day one, we’ve pushed SFUSD to focus on getting back to the basics. For San Francisco to be a world-class city, we need a world-class public education system. By expanding access to Algebra, we are preparing every student for success in high school and beyond. Chicago Public Schools just got another major break from the Illinois State Board of Education. Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, schools will no longer be downgraded for chronic absenteeism, even though 40% of students miss 10% or more of school days without a valid excuse. Now students can skip class for protests and walkouts without it hurting their school’s rating. This follows the state’s decision last year to lower proficiency cut scores on standardized tests, instantly inflating reported reading and math proficiency rates with zero actual improvement in student performance. Ben Bradley claims this redesign of the school report card is not meant to lower standards and give more schools better grades. Claiming that removing penalties doesn’t lower standards is pure gaslighting. If we lower standards enough, we can just declare every school a smashing success.
