This is definitely an "only in China" moment. Even beginning to explain what's going on here is complicated 😅 So basically people are queuing up to feed Sun Wukong, undoubtedly the most popular character in Chinese mythology (from the Ming dynasty novel "Journey to the West"). Why feed him? Because in the novel, Buddha punished Wukong to be trapped under a mountain for 500 years and he relied on the generosity of passerbys for food. So this is basically a re-enactment of this part of the novel. Why is this so popular? Because the actor is very good, cracking jokes with those feeding him, which is great content in the age of Douyin (the local version of TikTok) and live streaming: you share a video of yourself and/or others having a fun interaction with a Wukong comedian, much like you'd have with a stand-up comedian in the West. And in fact that's exactly what I'm doing here...

Our crewmate Andrey Fedyaev made this video capturing the process, using sweetened condensed milk, layers of intricately sliced honey bread and yogurt (РОСКОСМОС food supplies) and rehydrated berries (NASA food supplies). Our crewmates are such “space kitchen” masters, that I’ve eaten far more cake on the International Space Station than I do on Earth! Each homemade cake is unique, of course (another beloved ingredient is pine nuts!). This one happened to be for my birthday last week.
