"Pete Crow-Armstrong, who gets the best jumps of just about anybody in the world". Statcast agrees, with PCA averaging 5.1 feet above average on his jumps (#1 by a good amount, almost all of that before the camera is on him). Makes the "catch" look quite easy because it is. 35% out probability on this ball:

This is the kind of play that eye testers have a hard time with, but also shows why catch probability is so useful. This ball had just a 55% catch probability, and is just made to look so easy by Ceddanne Rafaela. It's all about what you don't see on the screen, because it happens before the camera is on the play. The jump is 9.0 feet above average. He was positioned well into right-center. Lesser outfielders win catch on the week on this one with a full extension dive.

I just noticed that Andy Pages has a new "best catch of the year" according to catch probability, and it's a great example of how watching the advanced stats can tell you things you won't get from watching on TV. This was the last play of the game last Wednesday. Bogaerts hit the ball 102.3 MPH at a 15° launch angle, and Pages covered 45 feet in 2.9 seconds and did it so efficiently he didn't even have to leave his feet. Statcast has it at just a 5% catch probability.

Absurd catch yesterday by Jacob Young of the Nationals. Just 2% catch probability on this one from Statcast (rounds up to 5%). Why doesn't it look that hard for Young? His jump was one of the best of the year, over 12 feet above average.

Get your "glazing Pete Crow-Armstrong" pitchforks out, because here's another one! And he actually caught it this time... Just a 20% catch probability, but he makes it look so easy. Most MLB outfielders aren't catching this at all, and certainly not with a casual slide. Why? Per usual for him, the jump and route efficiency. +8.3 feet above average (43 feet total, another top 10 of these), and a 97.3% route efficiency.

This Wyatt Langford catch from yesterday is a great example of why catch probability is good to know. Just a 45% catch probability here. Why? Any MLB outfielder catches this ball if they get there. Most can't get there. Langford's jump is elite, +8.7 feet above the average outfielder. The jump is so good he doesn't even have to get up to top speed. This is just a routine double into the gap much of the time, and the TV viewer thinks nothing of it:

Michael Harris II with the diving grab this evening in Atlanta: 80% catch probability. Why did it look so tough? -5.3 feet below average on the jump, and that's against all OF, not just CF. Tough sun for sure. The broadcast with an excellent theory, they cut to Andruw Jones with "he's probably saying he catches this standing up"! Still a fun catch and exciting finish. Please don't think you're not allowed to love a catch because of what the metrics are. Harris II always tends to catch the ball, the most important thing!

I really want Noelvi Marte to be good in CF, but this was pretty rough. Took a step in. Then kind of never sprinted. His average sprint speed is 29 feet/per second. On this play, it was just 26.8. MLB had it as an 80% catch probability for him.

Here is a drill to help you learn what it feels like to use the ground and start to sequence effectively. Notice how the club is setup in the video between my feet. Get to your back swing and jump favoring your lead foot left and laterally like I am. With that feeling step in and hit one. Not where you are pushing off from when you swing and try and get that into a feeling that makes sense to you. This is how power is created in the golf swing. This is also where physical limitations can show up.

This was obscured by other storylines last night, but is an obviously limited Trent Grisham going to be in CF again today? This ball had a 60% catch probability (that's for all OF, not just CF), and he had no ability to get close to it.

Catch of the Day- By The Numbers Cam Smith covers an incredible 137 feet to snag this foul ball off the bat of Zach Neto. Statcast gives it just a 20% catch probability, it's Smith's first 5-star grab of the season. +.8 OAA on this play. According to my search, Smith covered more ground than any outfielder did on a catch during all of 2025 (136 feet by Nathan Lukes).

Some people are tired of PCA highlights, but he just keeps making plays. Just 35% on this ball last night. The jump and speed are so good he's able to make a casual catch in front of the wall instead of slamming into it. +8 OAA and +9 DRS in 30 games.

Young QBs that want arm strength drills, this is a good one. Makes you focus on hips to arm whip without your feet. You don’t always have clean feet in the pocket so this helps simulate that. (Wind was nuts out there💨)
