I don’t even want to break this down into the misogynistic practice it sounds like. Impurities (that created the baby) from coming in contact with a woman & all that childbirth brings. A wash isn’t enough - a layer of skin must be removed? There’s a lot more to this practice than just that though. It’s not required. Rules for boy babies & girl babies can be different. They weigh the hair that is removed & give its weight in gold or silver (equivalent money) to charity - there’s a whole process for determining this amount. I think this is to show gratitude for the baby. It is also supposed to remove any negative energy from the newborn. There’s something symbolic about getting rid of the weak baby hair & getting stronger hair grown in. And, in that it shows that the baby is a servant (right from birth) of Allah. Unrelated, I had a long, full head of black hair like that when I was born. Thankfully, no one thought to shave it off.
