In The Return of the King, the intense retreat from Osgiliath was edited very differently in an earlier version of the film. Initially, the whole sequence was meant to cut back and forth with Gandalf and Pippin arriving at Minas Tirith coincidentally at the exact same time the retreat was taking place. This is why Pippin is riding with Gandalf on Shadowfax in the rescue scene. They later reshuffled it, mostly for better pacing but also to align more closely with how Tolkien wrote it in the book, where Gandalf arrives at the city much earlier, and the retreat occurs after he is already there, with the Nazgûl appearing as the survivors near the gates. Peter Jackson even talked about it on the commentary track, they originally shot it so Gandalf and Pippin are just arriving, spot the retreat from the hill, wheel around, and gallop straight out to intervene before even entering the city. When they moved the sequence and had Gandalf ride out from the gates instead, the Pippin detail simply remained as a leftover from the first edit. For comparison, Pippin remains in the city in the corresponding section of the book. ...Pippin got up and peered out.
