Love this. I'm building litertlm-kmp — a Kotlin Multiplatform wrapper over LiteRT-LM running Gemma 4 (incl. vision) fully on-device on Android. On-device multimodal on commodity Android is far more viable than people think. Exactly this thesis.

an old android as a local openai-compatible vision server, on-device, nothing leaving the network — this is the kind of reuse that should be the default

On-device vision with no cloud, no subscription, nothing leaves the network. That's the kind of project that makes local AI click for people who've only used APIs. The hardware's already sitting in a drawer — just needs the software to make it useful.

Everyone has an old Android sitting in a drawer and had no idea it was already a vision server 👀
