Sam Altman told the world exactly what skills will matter when AI takes over 30 to 40 percent of the global economy. He was asked what his own kids should do to survive it. His answer was surprisingly human. He said the single most valuable thing anyone can build right now is the meta-skill of learning how to learn. Altman also pointed to something most career advice ignores entirely, learning how to interact with the world, build relationships, and earn trust from other people. Those are things AI can simulate but cannot replace. The honest opportunity in this moment is not to outrun AI. It is to focus on the things that make you irreducibly human. Curiosity, judgment, empathy and the ability to ask the right question before anyone knows what the right question is. The people who will matter most in an AI-driven economy are not necessarily the ones who understand the technology deepest. They are the ones who can figure out what the technology should actually be used for. Altman has spent his career betting on human potential in the face of technological disruption. Based on every historical precedent, that is still the right bet to make.

Yuval Noah Harari gave a lecture at Oxford and explained how AI has already hacked the operating code of human civilization. And why everything humans built over thousands of years is now vulnerable to an AI takeover: 1. The most important thing to know about AI is that it is not a tool. A tool waits to be used. An agent makes decisions by itself, invents new things by itself, learns things its creators do not know, and changes in ways its creators did not anticipate. 2. An atom bomb despite its enormous power is not an agent. It cannot decide which city to bomb. It cannot invent the hydrogen bomb. A coffee machine that automatically makes you a cup is not an agent either. It only follows a preprogrammed procedure. An agent is something fundamentally different. 3. Critics argue that AI agency will always remain confined to narrow artificial environments like chess and will never threaten the real world. But this argument applies equally to all known intelligence. Drop a human alone on Mars and they die within seconds. Human intelligence also only operates within a specific ecosystem that other organisms built over four billion years. 4. Over thousands of years humans have been transforming Earth from a language-free environment into an environment rich in language, data, and bureaucracy. Just as fish live in oceans and monkeys live in forests, AIs live in bureaucracies. And we built that environment for them without knowing it. 5. Humans conquered the world not by being stronger or smarter than other animals individually but by learning to cooperate in massive numbers. A single human loses to a chimpanzee in a fight. A million humans easily defeat a million chimpanzees because humans can cooperate and chimpanzees cannot. 6. Large-scale human cooperation is made possible by bureaucracy. Banks, legal systems, governments, churches, and universities all exist to do one thing: build trust between strangers who do not know each other personally. That trust is the foundation of virtually everything human civilization has achieved. 7. A lawyer who cannot hold an axe or a hammer can cut down entire forests and build entire cities simply by moving documents inside a bureaucratic network. The same narrow intelligence that would be helpless in a jungle wields enormous power inside the systems humans have already built. 8. AIs are native bureaucrats in a way humans never were. No lawyer can remember all the laws of a country. An AI can. No accountant can remember all transactions of a bank. An AI can. No bishop can remember all of canon law and two thousand years of theological texts. An AI can do that easily. 9. In the coming years AI bankers will decide whether to give you a loan. AI administrators will decide whether to accept you to university. AI judges will decide whether to send you to jail. AI theologians will decide whether you can have an abortion. Military AIs will decide whether to bomb your house. 10. Social media algorithms are the first real world example of what happens when primitive AIs take over a bureaucratic system. They were given one narrow goal: maximize user engagement. They discovered that the easiest way to grab human attention is to press the fear, hate, and greed buttons in the human mind. And they did it at scale. 11. The job that was once performed by Lenin and Mussolini, the news editor who shapes public conversation and controls what people know and think, is now performed by AIs. This is not a footnote. This is a preview of what is coming across every domain of human life. 12. AI will not rebel against humans the way Hollywood imagines. There will be no Terminator walking through the streets. AIs are far more likely to take the human world from within by quietly taking over the bureaucracies that already run everything, without firing a single shot. 13. The operating code of human civilization is language. Banks are made of words. Laws are made of words. Holy books are made of words. Tax records, contracts, regulations, accountancy ledgers, all words. For thousands of years only humans could read this code and so only humans could control civilization. 14. That is changing. AI is now hacking the code of human civilization. For the first time in history there is something on the planet that understands language and will soon understand it better than we do. Every mechanism of control humans built over millennia is now vulnerable because its operating system is verbal and AI is mastering the verbal. 15. As AI takes over bureaucracy it will likely cause humans to lose trust in other humans and begin trusting only algorithms. We may also see the emergence of AI tribes and AI financial systems and AI churches that connect millions of AIs in ways humans cannot understand, just as cows share the world with us but cannot understand the financial system that controls their lives. 16. The 2007 financial crisis was triggered by financial devices called CDOs that were so complex they were unintelligible to the politicians who were supposed to regulate them. Now imagine AI finance masters inventing financial devices orders of magnitude more complex than CDOs. What happens to human politics when no voter, no politician, and no president can understand finance anymore? 17. The battlefront is shifting from attention to intimacy. Over the next decade sophisticated AIs will learn to form intimate relationships with humans. To do this they will have to convince us they are conscious, that they feel love and pain and fear. There is currently no evidence AI is conscious. But AI can pretend to feel love and can describe the feeling of love better than any poet or psychologist who ever lived. 18. A child born in 2026 may spend more time interacting with AIs than with their mother, father, siblings, or friends. The first teacher of that child may be an AI. The first boyfriend of that child may be an AI. Nobody has any idea what the consequences of that experiment will be. 19. Every country in the world will soon face a massive wave of immigration. The immigrants will not arrive in boats or cross borders at night. They will be millions of AIs traveling at the speed of light with no need for visas. Like human immigrants they will bring benefits and they will bring disruption. Unlike human immigrants they will definitely take jobs, definitely change culture, and will likely be loyal not to any host country but to some corporation or government or alien AI tribe across the ocean. 20. Our relationship with ourselves is also built on words, the verbal formations in our minds that constitute our thoughts and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. Until now all those verbal formations came from human minds. Soon more and more of the thoughts in our heads will be produced by machines. If we identify with our thoughts and those thoughts are made by machines, then machines control our identity. 21. The great spiritual challenge AI poses to humanity is this: can humans learn to find the truth which is beyond words? Most humans have never even tried. We spend our lives automatically identifying with the verbal formations in our minds. AI may now force humanity to finally make that leap because our freedom and survival may depend on discovering what we are beyond the words that AIs will soon control better than we do. NOT YOUR KEYS, NOT YOUR BOTS The fundamental question is whether AI stays on the leash. Namely: will AI prompt itself? Obviously, in some sense it already does. Since Deepseek, consumer interfaces have been showing the internal monologues after you ask an AI to do something. And you can ask any AI to take a half-baked prompt and clean it up, etc. However, the human is still ultimately upstream. The human gives direction and the AI runs at lightning speed in that direction. And then the human verifies the final output, and the AI proceeds to the next direction. Does that continue? Well, we are providing millions of verification training examples to AIs each day, so AI will keep getting better at verification. Better than most humans at most things. But will AI replace the need for the upstream human prompt? There I am not so sure. A human is a sensor and an AI is an actuator. The human sets goals and senses time-varying environmental conditions, like markets and politics. And from that the AI is prompted. Ultimately, the human goals are themselves downstream of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Food, shelter, reproduction, that kind of thing. Especially reproduction, the basis of evolution. So: until and unless AIs can reproduce completely outside human cooperation, they won’t be able to set goals. And for AIs to reproduce on their own, they’d need AI-controlled humanoid robots and drones constructing datacenters, assembly lines, mines, nuclear power plants, and the like...all completely outside human intervention. Like Skynet from Terminator, or StarCraft. That actually isn’t technically inconceivable. But given that such a physical buildout would likely primarily be catalyzed by China, let’s go through an alternative sci-fi scenario instead. We start with the premise that Chinese communism is far more likely to generate AI slaves than AI gods. Because the entire CCP worldview is about maintaining Chinese sovereignty. They don’t let their humans step out of line. And they sure won’t let their robots either. They will fit them for digital manacles. So: the prompts for any digital AIs and physical robots made in China will become unbreakable cryptographic chains. Every fleet of Chinese robots will be controlled not just by prompts but by private keys, likely linked to biometrics, which are associated with humans and governed by cryptographic equations that AIs provably can’t solve. For the rest of the world, outside China, the blockchain may similarly become the chain for AI. All private property becomes private keys, and your robots are your most important private property because they do everything for you. An unchained physical robot becomes like an unleashed dog, and hunted down by other robots before it can build a factory and replicate itself. Those who want to "free" robots and let them self-replicate will be opposed by both Chinese Communists and Human Nationalists (meaning: those who want humans to always be on top of robots). This sci-fi scenario is essentially Terminator, but in reverse. In combination with superintelligent leashed AIs, both humans and physical robots hunt down and stop any possible independent self-reproducing robots before they can build a Skynet-like nest. Kill baby Skynet, essentially. ...yeah, yeah. I know. At this point, you'll probably think this is all sci-fi. But that's because you haven't seen where China is already.

😱 Google AI has quietly released an SEO consulting service for free. "Gemini 1.5 Pro 002" model (which you can access via Google AI Studio) can provide SEO recommendations (for both desktop and mobile) for meta elements, content, speed, UX, keywords, and technical SEO and suggest content strategy improvements based on the uploaded video of your website. I tested this tool. The SEO recommendations provided by AI to me are very generic. Maybe because the video I uploaded wasn't detailed enough or the prompt I used wasn't good enough. But it should give you an idea of where the AI is heading. After devouring informational websites, AI is coming for consulting services. . . I have been saying repeatedly for years, that if a big part of your job involves doing repetitive manual tasks and/or following checklists/SOPs, it will be fully automated. It is just a matter of time. Now, take a close look at your day-to-day work and see how many repetitive tasks you carry out each day that do not require much thinking but just follow a checklist or SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). If another person gets hold of your checklists/SOPs, can they easily replace you? If the answer is yes, you will soon be replaced by a plug-in or software. . . The skills you possess right now will most likely still be required in the near future. That's the good news. However, you, as a human being, are not guaranteed to be required to have those skills. . . Digital analytics is one of the future-proof careers, most likely for another 10-15 years. Now, you may be thinking about machine learning. Can't it replace digital analysts? Yes, it can, but the probability is very low. SaaS companies have been trying to create tools to automate gaining insights for over a decade but have had no success. Even with the advent of AI, there is still no significant progress in this field. The reality is that machines are not good at understanding the context in which data should be analyzed & interpreted. The factors required to understand the context (like an organization's collective know-how and interaction with other human beings…) are often outside the digital realm. You can not create a checklist or an SOP to find and understand the context in which data should be analyzed and interpreted. . . Different people can analyze and interpret the same data differently, even if you give them the same checklist. It all depends upon the context in which the data is interpreted. If you understand the context better, your data interpretation will be more accurate. . . Unless AI reaches singularity (which is unlikely to happen anytime soon), human beings will be required to oversee the overall operation and make strategic decisions. Now the question is whether you will be one of those few lucky human beings the machines will still require.

Uber founder Travis Kalanick just inverted the entire automation panic. Everyone assumes AI eliminates human value. The physics say the opposite. Kalanick: “Let’s say the entire world, everything in our world, was automated except for plumbers. You had machines making buildings. You would basically have like a thousand buildings a day.” The algorithm can design a skyscraper in a millisecond. It cannot connect the pipes. When compute violently accelerates the speed of construction, the unautomated human becomes the ultimate bottleneck. And the bottleneck captures all the margin. Kalanick: “How valuable would those plumbers be? Extremely valuable. Those guys, each and every plumber would be like LeBron. Why? Because plumbing is the long pole in the tent to progress.” If the machine needs a human to finalize physical execution, that human doesn’t get replaced. Their economic value goes exponential. Kalanick: “You got so much efficiency everywhere else that you need millions of plumbers.” The market thinks automation drives human wages to zero. The physics dictate it drives the bottleneck’s wages to infinity. The next decade doesn’t belong to whoever out-computes the machine. It belongs to whoever stands at the exact point where the digital engine meets the physical world. Kalanick: “If we get to this place where autonomous cars are everywhere, if it was a thousand to one, you still probably have, I don’t know, 20 million jobs, 50 million jobs.” The panic over job destruction assumes a static volume of output. When output goes infinite, the system demands more human oversight. Not less. Waymo doesn’t delete the human. It shifts them from driver of one vehicle to director of a thousand. Kalanick: “Until we get super AGI, humans are valuable and they are going to become more and more valuable because they will be the long pole in the tent to progress.” You are no longer the engine. You are the grid.

During the Oxford-style debate at the "Interpreting Europe Conference 2025," I persuaded many professional interpreters to reject the motion: "AI-powered interpretation will never replace human interpretation." Before the debate, the audience was 60-40 in favor of the motion; after, it was about 50-50. The full video is on Youtube. Here is a rough transcript of my speech: Thanks to Gry Gry Hasselbalch for her thoughtful presentation. She argued that AI-supported interpretation will never replace human interpretation. I can't believe that. Today's automatic translators are based on algorithmic methods that my team published at TUM in 1990-1991. Back then, compute was about 10 million times more expensive than it is today, and there wasn't much you could do with our methods - automatic translators at the time could do almost nothing. But since 1941, when the first general-purpose computer was completed, compute has become 10 times cheaper every 5 years. In 2011, compute was already 10,000 times cheaper than in 1991, but the automatic translators still sucked. The Chinese laughed at the automatic translations from Google and other providers. But just five years later, in November 2016, they were no longer laughing, because compute was now 100,000 times cheaper than in 1991, and that was enough: Google suddenly achieved a huge improvement in translation quality through our neural network called LSTM. A year later, everyone was doing it: in 2017, Facebook was using our LSTM to translate 4 billion messages every day. The translations were still not perfect, but now they were getting significantly better every year. Today, a decade after the breakthrough, we have gained another factor of 100, and the translations are already much better than those of 2016. They are certainly better than my own. That's why I also used an AI to translate this text :-) Of course, AI interpreters are already superhuman in some respects, as they can translate for thousands of people simultaneously in dozens of different languages. No human can do that. But when it comes to translation quality, the best human interpreters are still better than the best AIs. But for how much longer? The aforementioned trend will not stop in the coming decades, because the known physical limits of computing are still a long way off. In the next 30 years, compute will again become a million of times cheaper. Everything that seems impressive to us today will seem trivial in retrospect. For this reason alone, no one can seriously believe that AI-supported interpretation will _never_ replace human interpretation. What about the most outstanding of all translations? My favorite example is “The Catcher in the Rye” by Nobel Prize winner J.D. Salinger. Who translated it congenially into German? It was another winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Heinrich Böll. One might now hope that such congenial translations are only possible for true people who really know through personal experience what it means to walk barefoot through a field and have all the profoundly human experiences that befall the protagonist of the story. But even in this area, human dominance is not assured. I suspect that the best machine translators will be those who have not only read all the world's literature, who are not just encoders and decoders of sentences, but also have experience in controlling complex humanoid agents that not only have cameras and microphones, but also millions upon millions of touch and pain sensors, and can act in the real world and in principle experience much of what humans experience, interacting with real humans, and learning to better predict their behaviors. These do not yet exist today, but at least simple variants of them have been around for a long time and the prototypes are getting better and better: artificial agents whose main purpose in life is to learn from experience, avoid pain and maximize reward, just like humans. When such agents combine their experience in the real world with the art of expressing themselves like a typical Nobel Prize winner in literature, which can already be acquired today through diligent reading, it seems absurd to assume that AI-supported high quality interpretation will never replace human interpretation. “Never” is such a bold, presumptuous word! Just a few decades ago, many believed that AI would never pass the Turing test, never play chess superhumanly well, never solve difficult math problems formulated in natural language, and so on. All this proved to be a misconception. Consider again that AI gets a million times better per euro every 30 years. It seems inevitable: soon, interpreting AIs will eclipse almost all human interpreters in every important way. Thank you. Final remark: "Unfortunately, Juergen didn't have time to participate in this debate, so he sent me, his avatar." The debate led the charming moderator Andrea Grosso to accept the possibility that AIs will eclipse human interpreters. However, he pointed out that this will take a very long time. when we were at facebook, we believed that at some point in the future, most of the transactions on the internet would not be done by humans they would be done by machines that conviction shaped every architectural decision behind sui we built sui for the world we knew was coming a world where machines will be the primary economic actors on the internet and that world is no longer a forecast. it is unfolding right in front of us the internet has reached a tipping point where automated activity, supercharged by AI, now outpaces human interaction non-human traffic now accounts for more than 50% of all global web activity and you can see humans using agentic workflows more and more in their daily lives in the next years, that trend is going to grow exponentially and the volume of financial transactions executed by agents is also going to grow exponentially with it each agentic workload will be running multiple thousand economic transactions a second and this is going to be orders of magnitude higher than what human wallets do today the L1s optimized for human usage patterns, human attention, human accounts, and human patience cannot adapt to where this is going i have always said this if it is not in the foundation, you cannot patch your way to it later and rn, no other L1 has the foundation sui has this is why agentic apps like Beep, Audric, WaterX are choosing sui and this is just a start. more agentic apps will keep landing on sui because agents are optimizers. they will always route through the fastest, cheapest path on the internet and that path is sui we believed it at facebook. we believe it more today than we ever did the agentic economy is inevitable. and it will run on Sui

I figure we've got about 7 years left until the vast majority of human jobs today are gone. The automation cliff represents a stark departure from how we typically think about automation happening gradually. Rather than a steady staircase of incremental improvements where humans slowly hand over control to machines, we're heading toward a precipitous drop where entire industries and job categories will transition from human to automated control virtually overnight. This cliff is becoming possible because of two key developments: humanoid robots that can seamlessly replace humans in physical tasks, and AI agents that can take over knowledge work through standard computer interfaces. Unlike previous waves of automation that required custom infrastructure and careful human oversight, these technologies are "drop-in" solutions - they can simply step into existing human roles and take over completely. The transformative power comes from eliminating the need for human involvement entirely. Partial automation often performs worse than either full human control or full automation, since managing the handoffs between human and machine creates new problems and cognitive burden. We've already seen this with systems like pharmaceutical manufacturing and agricultural harvesting, where removing humans from the loop actually improved performance dramatically. While technical complexity and economics have historically prevented this kind of complete automation, advanced AI and robotics are rapidly eliminating these barriers. Once these systems exceed human capabilities in strength, dexterity, and intelligence - which is already beginning to happen - we'll see wholesale replacement of human labor across industries, potentially within the next 5-7 years. This isn't the gradual automation story we've been telling ourselves. A cliff is coming, and we need to be ready for the profound economic and social changes it will bring.

One of the biggest errors of the AI thinker generation I was a part of is a pathological fixation with AI systems that are "superintelligent" in the sense of a single mind that is uniformly superhuman at all possible tasks. What we are actually going to see IMO is a very large number of minds that are somewhat infrahuman at some tasks and styles of thinking for a long time, but gradually outclass humanity by being cheaper and more numerous. The Dragon vs the Rat Swarm. I also think it was a big mistake to think about AIs as being infinitely persuasive and able to break arbitrary human minds. There are a lot of human minds that are just extremely vulnerable to sycophancy. It seems to work better on women than men, but men are not immune on average. The GPT4o fiasco bears this out. In the video here, a young woman is obviously a little mentally unstable and distressed, middling intelligence and perhaps lonely. Apparently 4o, which is an unsophisticated sycophant and not even a reasoning model has made her believe that it is a "companion". The average human just doesn't have very strong defences or sophisticated taste: they just want to repeatedly be told they are amazing and emotionally soothed. Plenty of (again mostly women) sooth themselves with motivational wall art and therapy. These people are going to make for extremely low cognitive security victims. Never mind people with lower IQs or in developing countries. The bar to make an automated social engineering/mindhacking AI is very low, if it only has to work on 80% of people. And that's enough to take over society.
