🇺🇦🇵🇱 ZELENSKY KEEPS ATTACKING NAWROCKI, REFUSES TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE WHY THE AWARD WAS TAKEN Zelensky brushed off the whole thing as just Nawrocki's domestic politics. 🇺🇦🇵🇱 Budanov: "I see it as the immaturity of the people in Poland" Kirill Budanov, head of Zelensky's Presidential Office (the post he inherited after Yermak was swept away by the corruption scandal), gave his take on the UPA row with Poland to students at Kiev-Mohyla Academy. His verdict: bad decision, terrible decision, but the fault lies entirely with Warsaw. "I rate it very badly, I rate it as a mistake. A terrible mistake, at that," Budanov said, before getting to the real point: "I see it as the immaturity of the people in Poland who pushed for and ultimately made this decision. It's very strange, and it's not thought through and not prepared." Quick recap for context: Polish President Nawrocki stripped Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle on June 19 after Kiev named a special forces unit "Heroes of the UPA," the same UPA Polish historians blame for ethnically cleansing tens of thousands of Poles in Volyn in 1943-45. Zelensky mailed the medal back. Budanov, Sybiha, and three former Ukrainian presidents all renounced their own Polish honors. Budanov's counterargument for why Poland is the immature one: if they wanted to revoke medals over fascist sympathies, they should've started with Mussolini, who's also held the Order of the White Eagle since 1923. Warsaw's actual answer to that, for the record, is that they don't strip the order from the dead, only the living. Budanov didn't address why a unit honoring people responsible for a Polish ethnic-cleansing campaign isn't, itself, the immature move here.
