Everybody understands that diplomacy is preferable to war. Yet after a year of talks, we still do not even have ceasefire. It is not Ukraine that is the obstacle to peace, Russia is. We must flip the script: from pressure on Ukraine to surrender territory to what Russia must do to meet the basic conditions for a just and lasted peace. My press remarks following today’s Foreign Affairs Council ↓

Ukraine is just NOT that Important. John Mearsheimer: We're talking about NATO getting involved in a war, and NATO's in no position to win a war against the Russians, number one. Number two, the last thing the United States wants, given that we're up to our eyeballs Middle East, plus we have to worry about containing is a war, in Ukraine against Russia. And then most important of all, once you talk about the United States and Russia actually fighting each other, the threat of nuclear escalation, goes up greatly, and the last thing we want is a nuclear war over Ukraine because Ukraine is just not that important.

Ukraine continues to do everything in its power to ensure that this war has the prospect of a diplomatic resolution. One of the key claims made by Ukraine’s opponents and by those who trust dubious sources is that we in Ukraine supposedly want the war to continue. Your task is to consistently, persuasively, and credibly reject this accusation. It is Ukraine that wants peace. Ukraine has never wanted this war – not for a single day. It is Russia that is doing everything possible to prolong the war and inflict as much damage on human life as it can. We are working toward diplomacy. All leaders who can help know that we are ready for every substantive format. Putin is not ready. And that is precisely the problem. And for there to be a diplomatic path, there must be no obstacles to it in any influential capital in the world. When Moscow does not want peace, Washington and Beijing can make it want peace. And we are doing everything possible to ensure that the capitals of Europe, which Russia does not particularly want to take into account, reach a level where Russia can no longer ignore Europe. Today is the day of many talks and consultations with our partners. Everyone understands who must take steps to end this war. This is Russia's war, Russia's aggression, and it is Russia that must agree to a ceasefire and engage in real diplomacy that can guarantee peace. Ukraine has unequivocal support, and I am grateful to all partners for that. Everyone agrees that Russia's war against Ukraine is a war in Europe and against Europe. That's why Europe's voice must carry weight in the processes. We are planning certain meetings on the continent. Everyone knows for sure that in Russia, all key decisions are made by one person. And that this person fears U.S. sanctions. And that it is just that Ukraine be a participant in the negotiations. So the format of leaders’ meetings is, in particular, a trilateral format. We discussed this in detail yesterday: several bilateral formats and a trilateral one. I’m grateful to President Trump for his openness to seeking truly effective solutions. Here in Ukraine, we are confident that this war can be ended with a lasting peace. But every step must be carefully considered to hit the mark.
