On June 26, an all-hands fire broke out inside a basement apartment in a private dwelling in Queens. FDNY Fire Marshals determined the cause of the fire to be a lithium-ion battery that was charging in the kitchen of the fire apartment. The fire trapped a 48-year-old man inside the home, who had to escape through a bedroom window. The victim later died at a hospital. This is the first death in 2026 connected to a lithium-ion battery fire that happened this year. Where possible, charge and store lithium-ion batteries or micromobility devices OUTSIDE. Everything from eScooters to electric toothbrushes carries the risk for #thermal runaway and considered hazardous materials. I asked about the ACCC's report on Lithium-Ion Batteries and Consumer Product Safety during the recent senate estimates. The report advocates for a national product safety incident database to capture lithium ion battery fires. Senator Gallagher responded positively and I look forward to quick action on this problem from the Government.

The Tulsa Fire Department released the following video to warn people about the "dangers of lithium-ion batteries." Two dogs and a cat were filmed hanging out before one of the dogs started the fire with the battery pack. The animals were filmed in the living room on an indoor monitoring camera, observing the fire before it got out of hand. "Lithium-ion batteries are known for storing a significant amount of energy in a compact space," the fire department said. "However, when this energy is released uncontrollably, it can generate heat, produce flammable and toxic gases, and even lead to explosions." The pets were able to escape the home through a dog door.

How much lithium is this? The world has 1.1 billion passenger cars and 375 million trucks and buses. Replacing these requires about 47 million tons of lithium -- 9 million tons for the cars and 38 million tons for the trucks and buses. That’s only 31 percent of the 2025 known lithium resources, and keep in mind, the known resources grow each year as people look for more lithium. What is more, lithium stays in a vehicle during a battery’s 15 to 25-year life. At the end of the battery’s life, the battery is recycled or re-used for stationary electricity storage, so the mining is one-time. For stationary electricity storage itself, less than one-tenth the lithium, 2 to 4 million tons, is needed worldwide than is needed for vehicles. As such, current lithium resources are over three times those needed for vehicles plus storage. Also, many other battery types now exist that don’t use lithium.
