We strongly condemn the brutal murder of Masud Rana and Raihan, two young leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BSL), who were brutally hacked to death last night in Mallickpur Bazar. Their only “crime” was writing “Joy Bangla” on a wall—a slogan that united the nation in the fight for freedom during the Liberation War of 1971. This heinous act, reportedly carried out by BNP-Jamaat militants supported by Yunus, is a direct attack on the values of our independence. These extremist forces now treat “Joy Bangla”—the rallying cry of our martyrs—as a treasonous act. The media’s silence only deepens the injustice, serving as a calculated tool of this fascist #Yunus regime, ensuring the voices of victims are buried and the truth remains hidden. This bloodshed cannot continue. Muhammad Yunus and his Jamaat-Shibir allies must be held accountable for their betrayal of the nation’s liberation values and the violence they propagate. The world must condemn this tyranny and stand with the people of Bangladesh. #JusticeForMasudAndRaihan #JoyBangla #BangladeshCrisis #EndFascism #StepDownYunus . . . . . How a female student league activist attacked by BNP’s student front leaders in exam hall - Police and army obliged attackers and attacked student unlawfully detained Like other students in her batch, Piya also went to attend academic exam in Rajshahi Mohila college. But only for her affiliation with student league, a group of activists from BNP’s student front entered the exam hall. In show of surrender to BNP’s student wing leaders, teachers allowed the cadres a free reign as they barred the student from giving exam, followed by assault. Even a group of army troops who came at the scene did not bring to justice the attackers and stop the glaring rights abuses. Rather in defence of attackers, troops handed the affected girl to police. Even in presence of cops the student was assaulted and later unlawfully detained. This entire turn of events prove that reform under Dr Yunus is promoting division and mainstreaming violence on the campus.⁩ ⁩#Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis #MassArrests #AwamiLeague #WeWantJustice #BangladeshUnderFascism UN Human Rights UN in Bangladesh Amnesty International Human Rights Watch Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sajeeb Wazed Volker Türk FIDH U.S. Embassy Dhaka International Human Rights Foundation Alex Gray Michael Kugelman Human Rights at FCDO @RFKHumanRights Assistant Secretary Riley Barnes Sarah Cooke Chris Blackburn European External Action Service - EEAS 🇪🇺 Susan Ryle Canada in Bangladesh European Union in Bangladesh meenakshi ganguly Amnesty Internationalsasia UN Human Rights Asia Dr. Brahma Chellaney ICJ - Asia and the Pacific CIJ_ICJ International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention Mujib Mashal Kerry Kennedy Mahfuz Anam Prothom Alo The Daily Star BBC News Bangla Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh Irene Khan FORUM-ASIA Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

No Right to Peaceful Assembly in Bangladesh: Video Shows Mob Violence Against Dissenters With Police Complicity An "anti-fascist" mob of regime supporters violently assaulted an unarmed dissenter in front of police, who stood by under direct orders from Dr. Yunus’s office to prevent citizens affiliated with #AwamiLeague from holding a peaceful rally. This rally, organized by Awami League, aimed to commemorate Nur Hossain Day, honoring a historic figure who sacrificed his life to resist military rule. It was also a peaceful call for justice against recent targeted violence and murders impacting Awami League supporters over the last three months. #WeWantJustice #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis #SaveBangladesh #MassArrests #AwamiLeague #BangladeshUnderFascism #Trump #DonaldTrump UN Human Rights UN in Bangladesh Volker Türk FIDH U.S. Embassy Dhaka International Human Rights Foundation Alex Gray Michael Kugelman Human Rights at FCDO @RFKHumanRights Assistant Secretary Riley Barnes Sarah Cooke Chris Blackburn Sajeeb Wazed European External Action Service - EEAS 🇪🇺 Susan Ryle Canada in Bangladesh European Union in Bangladesh Kerry Kennedy BBC News Bangla Irene Khan Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Mary Lawlor Prothom Alo meenakshi ganguly Amnesty International Human Rights Watch Ministry of Foreign Affairs FORUM-ASIA Amnesty Internationalsasia UN Human Rights Asia ICJ - Asia and the Pacific International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention Mujib Mashal Mahfuz Anam The Daily Star Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh CIJ_ICJ Dr. Brahma Chellaney Mary Lawlor International Center for Law and Religion Studies Donald J. A disturbing video from Syria. A sheikh attempts to "save" a young Christian from "fire consumption" by pressuring him into conversion. This is the grim reality for religious minorities currently living under the rule of Ahmed al-Sharaa—the man leading the "New ISIS" transition. The historical irony is staggering. In the 7th century, John of Damascus (675–749)—a Christian who worked directly for the Muslim Umayyad rulers—wrote "The Fount of Knowledge," a work that openly critiqued Islam. In that era, a Christian could hold a high-ranking office and debate theology. Today, such a critique would be an immediate death sentence under al-Sharaa’s regime. Syria is moving backward, erasing centuries of pluralism. What is even more concerning is that this "new" Syria is being lobbied for and managed by U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack. A figure who faced federal court only years ago for his controversial foreign influence is now the primary architect of U.S. policy in the region. When diplomatic rebranding takes precedence over basic religious freedom, the world’s most vulnerable pay the price. The international community cannot turn a blind eye to the "theological correction" and systematic pressure being exerted on Syria's religious groups. cc: Human Rights Watch Amnesty International USCIRF Department of State UN Human Rights Human Rights Campaign Rapid Response #Syria #HumanRights #ReligiousFreedom #TomBarrack #History

Following my recent post regarding General Kassaye Chemeda, who is now a delegate representing Addis Ababa city in Abiy's national dialogue, I got many questions that need clarity: General Kassaye Chemeda was a former Derg military high-ranking officer who was, in 2019, reinstated to advise Prime Minister Abiy. General Kassaye made several speeches calling for mass murder, two of which are worth discussing. The first statement was against Oromo youths (Oct 2019), and the second was against Tigrayans (Nov 2020). In the following video-1, he spoke while training the Ethiopian army and teaching how to mass kill in his words, "devils" (meaning Tigrayans). He says "Shoot with a single bullet; if you are Christian, before you shoot against them (Tigrayans), say in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; if you are Muslim, say Bismillah, I can assure you that these devils won't stop before you." Clap by the army. In one of his media engagements (video-2), he said: "Those youths carrying sticks (Oromo youths) to protest against this government (Abiy administration), the Ethiopian Defense Forces should tell them to put the sticks down; if they refuse, they should shoot on their heads, it is an emergency time, nothing is above Ethiopia." Now, he is chosen to represent Addis Ababa in Abiy's national dialogue! He should have been investigated for major atrocity crimes perpetrated in Ethiopia. The Response of President Samia’s Administration to UN Human Rights Council is Nothing But Lies and Deception ⸻ The recent response by President Samia Suluhu’s administration to the concerns raised by DefendDefenders is filled with lies and deliberate misinformation. In his statement on behalf of the Tanzanian government, Ambassador Abdallah Possi made the following false claims: 1. Claim: There is freedom of expression through social media. Reality: President Samia’s government has severely restricted social media platforms. X (formerly Twitter) and Clubhouse are blocked and only accessible via VPN. The administration enforces the Cyber Crime Act—a repressive law used to blackmail, arrest, and silence dissenting voices online. 2. Claim: Tanzania upholds its constitution, as well as regional and international human rights obligations. Reality: This is blatantly false. Tanzania has violated both domestic and regional human rights laws. The abduction of The People’s President and Agather Atuhaire—who were held incommunicado, tortured, sexually abused, and dumped at the Tanzanian border—is a gross human rights violation. Additionally, Tanzania deported former Kenyan Chief Justice and ex-Justice Minister Martha Karua along with several others—an act in direct violation of East African Community (East African Community) laws and agreements. Tanzania’s actions also contravene the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 3. Claim: Civilians have the right to express themselves. Reality: Opposition leader Tundu Antiphas Lissu was charged with treason simply for expressing the need for electoral reforms under the slogan #NoReformsNoElection. His peaceful campaign was met with arbitrary arrest and a treason charge—an unmistakable sign of political repression. 4. Claim: Tanzania has conducted seven multiparty elections fairly. Reality: Each election cycle has been marred by violence, arrests, and fabricated charges against opposition members. Opposition candidates have been systematically prevented from running, resulting in CCM candidates winning uncontested. In the 2020 election alone, 28 CCM Members of Parliament won unopposed—some of whom now serve as ministers. This is not democracy; it’s manipulation. 5. Claim: The People’s President and Agather Atuhaire failed to disclose the reasons for their visit to Tanzania. Reality: If that were true, they would have been stopped at the airport—not abducted day later. Boniface was followed by police at his hotel around midnight, refused to open the door, and was later apprehended during breakfast. He was taken to an unknown location, tortured, sexually abused, and dumped at the Tanzanian-Kenyan border. These are crimes—not immigration issues. 6. On April 24, 2025, during Tundu Antiphas Lissu’s court appearance, dozens of civilians who went to witness the trial were abducted by police and taken to the Mabwepande and Ununio forests. There, they were tortured—some had their legs, arms, and spines broken. This is a gross violation of basic human rights. It is a disgrace that President Samia’s administration sent this man to stand before the world and lie so openly. UN Human Rights Council has a moral and legal obligation to thoroughly investigate these escalating human rights violations. These cheap lies must not be accepted at face value.
