Today was very special for Bryan and I to stand tall with and for the People of Iran. Thank you to Darya Safai for inviting me and allowing us to pray together for the tens of thousands of Iranians murdered by this “sick” regime, as President Trump has said of them. As US Ambassador to Belgium, the USA supports the will of the Iranian people for a better future. While we have interacted with many external opposition figures, we want to be clear that, as The President has said, the U.S. does specifically not endorse Reza Pahlavi or any specific opposition leader. Rather, we wholeheartedly support the will of the Iranian people in Iran for a better future for them and their families. I met three mothers whose sons were killed by the regime for simply walking in the streets holding candles for peace. We took a moment of silence for all those who have been killed. We stand with the great people of Iran.

I am incredibly grateful to the resilient people of the remote and impoverished village of Jhao, who have prevailed in harsh circumstances. They have taken to the streets, breaking the idol of fear. In this small, remote community, dozens have fallen victim to enforced disappearances, and thousands have been compelled to abandon their homes. For years, the residents of this isolated village have been blackmailed, pressured, and coerced into maintaining silence. We are not okay, and that’s okay to say. I wish I could tell you that we are standing here and that the rest of the world is standing with us. With you. Sadly I can’t say that. There is a loud and aggressive minority around the world who doesn’t get, that being murdered at a peace festival does not equal resistance. I do however, know that we are standing here on behalf of all those people in the world, with moral clarity. And there are a lot of them. And there are many who want to be here with you. And they are here with you at heart. On October 7th, your loved ones went to Nova. We call it a peace music festival because that’s what it was—a place to make new friends, to let loos explore and celebrate life. And this juxtaposition hurts the most —because on that day, the light your loved ones were, was met with the most unimaginable darkness. Our lives will never be the same. But today, as we remember them, we also make a promise: to honor their memory by living as they would have. As we stand here in grief, we have a message to the world: we will not be defeated. Israel was attacked on October 7th and every day since, for the crime of existing. For the audacity of just being here. But we are here, and we are here to stay. And despite the trauma we’ve faced, we are in Israel, standing strong together, committed to the memories of those we lost and to the return of our hostages. There is a loud and aggressive minority around the world who doesn’t get, that being murdered at a peace festival does not equal resistance. I do however, know that we are standing here on behalf of all those people in the world, with moral clarity. And there are a lot of them. And there are many who want to be here with you. And they are here with you at heart. On October 7th, your loved ones went to Nova. We call it a peace music festival because that’s what it was—a place to make new friends, to let loos explore and celebrate life. And this juxtaposition hurts the most —because on that day, the light your loved ones were, was met with the most unimaginable darkness. Our lives will never be the same. But today, as we remember them, we also make a promise: to honor their memory by living as they would have. As we stand here in grief, we have a message to the world: we will not be defeated. Israel was attacked on October 7th and every day since, for the crime of existing. For the audacity of just being here. But we are here, and we are here to stay. And despite the trauma we’ve faced, we are in Israel, standing strong together, committed to the memories of those we lost and to the return of our hostages. The idea that "the West and the Jews are the reason why we have dysfunctional countries in the Arab world” is a dishonest deflection. How many innocent women and girls are supposed to be murdered by their families in the name of honor for us to realize that our problem is internal? How many men and children are supposed to support terrorist organizations for us to realize that we have a major ideological problem? How many of our minorities, like the Jews, the Kurds, and the gays, should pack their bags and run away from our countries until we realize that we are indiscriminately hostile to those different from us? How many of our girls should get married until we realize we have a problem? How many atheists, blasphemers, and ex-Muslims are supposed to get jailed or killed until we realize that we have a problem with empathy? How many gays are supposed to get hanged or thrown from rooftops until we realize that we do not care about our people? How many painters, artists, teachers, and comedians are supposed to be slaughtered by extremists until we realize that the problem comes from us? How much Arab blood is supposed to be spilled by other Arabs until we realize that WE are our biggest problem? Change doesn’t start ”out there” – it starts with us. We cannot continue to repeat the same traditions from our failed cultures and then point our fingers at the West and the Jews and say, ”They are the problem.” Blaming the West and the Jews is a convenient scapegoat. It means that the problem isn’t within us. It means that they should work on themselves, but we? We can remain as we are. Believing that our teachings and our culture are perfect is a problem. A strike on Kharkiv, just an ordinary apartment building. With three Shaheds. A despicable and cynical attack, when the rescuers arrived at the scene of the strike, the terrorists attacked again.
