NordSpace is pleased to announce a groundbreaking Canada-Germany R&D collaboration and funding towards medium-lift rocket engine development with Fraunhofer ILT, receiving advisory services and up to $335,000 from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP). This collaboration will support a research and development project that will advance our large format multi-material additive manufacturing capabilities for medium-lift rocket engines. This collaboration between NordSpace, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, and SWMS (Systemtechnik Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH) builds upon the recent launch of our Advanced Manufacturing for Aerospace Lab (AMA Lab), and marks an important step toward our ongoing efforts to advance orbital launch vehicles that are fully scalable from light to medium-lift payload capacities. NordSpace's Tundra and Tundra+ light lift vehicles, capable of 500 kg and 1,100 kg to LEO respectively, are being designed specifically to scale to the medium-lift Titan vehicle (5,000 kg+ to LEO) by the early 2030s. This advanced manufacturing project for space propulsion harnesses breakthrough methods such as large volume, high-speed, high-resolution, multi-metal deposition to optimize rocket engine design, fabrication, and testing. NordSpace will partner with Fraunhofer ILT – the German research institute that has developed the world-leading EHLA laser-based high-speed additive manufacturing capability, and SWMS – the German company that has developed the CAESA software for AI-powered advanced manufacturing path planning optimization. This collaborative project will support NordSpace in developing next-generation, large-scale, regeneratively cooled liquid engines, validated through rigorous hot-fire test campaigns and positioned for flight qualification and commercial scale-up. This announcement builds on NordSpace’s AMA Lab launched earlier this year with Ontario Centre of Innovation support and another advanced manufacturing project that received funding from the Canadian Space Agency. The AMA Lab has already accelerated the design of our 3D-printed Hadfield engines and enhanced development cycles through AI-driven design methodologies and direct validation at our test range. Now, this new Canada-Germany collaborative R&D project will go further into efficient production methods for these advanced rocket engines. We will also present updates on this initiative at the Canadian Space Launch Conference on May 5, 2026 in Ottawa. China unveiled on Wednesday the names of its moon-landing spacesuit and the crewed lunar rover. According to a news release from the China Manned Space Agency, the new spacesuit, which will be worn by astronauts as they walk on the lunar surface, is named 望月 (Wangyu), or Stargazing, while the manned rover's name is 探索 (Tansuo), or Exploration. The names were reviewed and chosen by a group of experts from more than 9,000 proposals, which were solicited from members of the public. The agency explained that the word "Wangyu" symbolizes a new chapter in China's space endeavor that features manned missions to the moon and deep-space expeditions and also demonstrates the country's determination to uphold the peaceful use of outer space and pursue a shared future of mankind. Currently, prototypes of the spacesuit and rover are being designed and the research work has been progressing smoothly. China has announced its plan of conducting its first manned mission to the moon around 2030. China’s manned spacecraft was named Mengzhou in 2024, meaning dream vessel, which reflects the fact that the manned lunar exploration carries the Chinese people's space dream and opens a new journey of space adventure. The country’s lunar lander was named Lanyue in 2024, meaning embracing the moon, a term that appeared in a poem written by the late Chairman Mao Zedong. The word symbolizes the Chinese people's confidence in exploring the universe.

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announces a landmark advancement in Pakistan’s Manned Space Mission Program as two Astronaut Candidates, Khurram Daud and Muhammad Zeeshan Ali are set to depart for the People’s Republic of China to begin advanced astronaut training at the Astronaut Centre of China (ACC). This is a significant step forward in Pakistan’s space exploration journey that positions the country in the community of a select group of nations actively engaged in human spaceflight programs. Under this collaboration, Pakistan is preparing for its first-ever participation in a mission to the China Space Station (CSS). The mission is currently planned for launch in late 2026, where a Pakistani astronaut will serve as a Payload Expert aboard the Shenzhen mission. During mission aboard the ‘China Space Station (CSS)’, the Pakistani astronaut will conduct several scientific experiments in microgravity. These experiments span critical areas including material science, fluid physics, life/ bio science, and biotechnology, with potential applications for climate resilience, food security, and industrial innovation. On the historical occasion, Honourable Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif commended the efforts of SUPARCO; a harbinger of deep space exploration. He also appreciated ironclad China-Pakistan brotherhood, yet another testimony of which is choosing Pakistan to be the first country for participation in Manned Space Mission.
