A Chapter We’ll Always Cherish 🤍 To everyone who supported Fredcess Official, the team, the admins, and most especially our mains, Fred Moser and Princess Aliyah—thank you from the bottom of our hearts. From PBB to the outside world, we witnessed a genuine connection and a beautiful friendship that we will always be grateful for. Through this team, we also found something beyond being fans. Together, we were able to support one another, help people through difficult times, and stand together for causes that truly mattered. In our own little way, this team became a source of comfort, kindness, and support for many. But life has its own plans. People grow, paths change, and priorities shift. Sometimes, we have to learn to let go of what we once had and allow everyone to continue chasing their own dreams. We hope Fred and Aliyah continue to pursue their careers, grow in their respective fields, and perhaps this is the time for both of them to focus on what truly matters— to continue becoming better artists in their own ways because they are still young ans capable of doing more. May they both find success, happiness, and fulfillment in whatever path they choose. And even as we close this chapter, there is one last thing we would like to do as Fredcess Official. We will still be sending Fred his birthday gifts on his birthday as a simple gesture of appreciation and gratitude for all the memories he has given us throughout this journey. Who would have thought that what started as a simple one-week subscription joke would turn into something this beautiful? One year later, here we are—stronger, closer, and still choosing to stay. This journey has never been easy. We have experienced days filled with excitement and happiness, but we have also endured long periods of silence. There were moments when we held on without any assurance of what was coming next. After MMK, we faced uncertainty, wondering if Kai and Kyle would have projects together again, wondering if there would be another event, another appearance, another reason to celebrate. Yet despite all those questions, we stayed. We stayed through the quiet days. We stayed through the waiting. We stayed through the moments when all we had was hope. And that is something I will always be proud of. I am proud of every Wishart who chose understanding over frustration, patience over doubt, and love over disappointment. I am proud of those who continued supporting Kai and Kyle individually while still believing in KaiKyle. I am proud of those who remained positive even when things were unclear. IS IT ADVISABLE TO MARRY A WOMAN WHO IS MORE CAREER-DRIVEN THAN YOU? Hello, friends. Welcome to another episode of Mr & Mrs Better Half. It is designed to strengthen marriages and relationships that will lead to marriage, with wisdom from God's Word. Sometimes ago, I asked some friends, ‘what do you think causes major friction in a marriage?’ One of the answers was money. On further probing, we got into one of the big money issues: “Finances are often problematic when the wife earns more.” A follow-up question: Since few earn millions on their 1st job, how did these women build their finances to surpass their husbands’? Again, we hit another interesting note- ‘some women are too ambitious! If they would just ‘chill’ things would be okay.’ This statement threw up so many questions. Should a wife deliberately go for a low-paying job to avoid earning more than her husband? Should she also perform poorly to ensure she doesn’t get promoted? If she’s offered a raise, should she refuse? Of course, these things sound silly but these are actual options some couples have considered in their homes to preserve the peace. Sometimes, the man actually starts out earning more but calamity strikes and his business/career goes downhill. So the once ‘balanced’ household turns upside down because the woman now pulls most of the financial weight. The big question you should ask is this. ‘Why should money (something so many seem to be chasing) which should make life easier become the very thing that can cause unhappiness? There are 4 things I would like you to consider today- Changing times, Culture, Acceptance and Attitude. A) Changing Times: Men, the days when women in the workplace were oddities have since gone. With advancements in technology, many of the more physical jobs have been taken over by machines. This means that there’s no reason women should be sidelined on the grounds of being physically weaker than men. This coupled with the realization of a woman’s right to express her intelligence means the world has made much progress where women in the workplace are concerned. Today there is hardly any industry where you will not find women doing remarkable things. As a result, it is not uncommon for husbands & wives to earn similar salaries or have the wives even bringing more. The truth is that most men like the added household income- who wouldn’t? The only thing is that they just want to earn more than their wives. This clearly becomes an issue of self-esteem and ego. Please understand that you can’t derive your sense of self from money. Many men think being a man is all about bringing in money. It takes a lot more than that to be a real man. Different things make a man. They include the ability to provide, lead, protect, nurture and love. Men you have to bring more to the table than just money to be an exemplary head of your household. So stop being hung up on money alone. (B) Let’s go to Culture. In the past women were touted as the homemakers while men barely lifted a finger in their homes. What men didn’t understand is that being a homemaker is a very marketable skill! A good homemaker is likely to be very skilled in people and money management, multi-tasking, negotiation skills, etc. You’d think that keeping a woman in the house would incapacitate her in the business terrain but you’d be wrong! Women develop the soft skills required for top-tier management quite early in life! Coupled with formal education, a woman who truly wants to succeed in business is a force to reckon with. Perhaps we should take a look at how we raise our sons these days. We might just be doing them a disservice! (C) Let’s discuss Acceptance. As a man, I understand one’s ego can take a pounding if your wife earns more. Single men dating ladies that earn more often vow to themselves that they'll turn the financial tables around before they get married or shortly after. Like it or not, this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes a woman’s gift will shoot her to the peak of her profession. What will you do? Will you kill yourself trying to earn more? Will you resent her success or do the mature and supportive thing and accept it? I have come to know a certain truth. As much as it might be your preference, who earns more in your relationship is not your call. I will repeat this. It is not your call to determine who earns more in this life. Everyone has a race to run. God has blessed everyone with a unique gift. You cannot determine the extent of another person’s potential. If you can't cope with a successful lady you actually have a problem with self-esteem which is not her problem; it’s yours. Single guys, when you court a lady, look beyond her hips, lips and fingertips and determine her inner ‘horsepower’. Can you envision whom she is likely to be if all things work out for her good? Will you be intimidated by her success? There are ladies who are incredibly brilliant, driven and ambitious. You can tell they are loaded from the onset. Such people tend to have a light shine on them and often end up in the public eye doing great things. You shouldn’t marry someone like that and try to cap her … you will kill her spirit, kill the marriage or kill yourself. Remember that your wife also wants to die empty. Your responsibility as a husband is to give her wings to fly. Be a real man, a secure man. Manage your ego and support her. Now if this is difficult for you to stomach, please don’t marry her. In your house, everyone should be a cheerleader urging each one to victory. If you know you've the tendency to be jealous of people’s progress or be competitive, marry wisely. More importantly, deal with this weakness. It’s a bad one & reeks of emotional immaturity. (D) Finally- Attitude. Sometimes the husbands try to be supportive but the attitudes of the wives make it very hard. I have already addressed the men on attitude and the need to build their self-confidence and be supportive of their wives, but now I’ll speak to the wives. To the women: Do you lord the fact that you earn more over your husband? Do you seize the reins and make the big decisions? If you keep cutting down your husband because you earn more money, you pull down your home with your hands. Please don’t get it twisted. The man remains the head of the home. Don’t let money or your position at work get to your head. Pride is unattractive in anyone and that includes you. Cultivate a gentle, quiet and humble spirit. It’s important to note that money or wealth will always amplify who you really are. If you are compassionate and respectful you will continue to be so regardless of the money you make. If you are crass, rude and disloyal, money will make that more apparent and cause problems in the home. Remember that marriage is a partnership. Your success is really “our success”. His support helped you become successful. Even if he has not been supportive still carry your blessing with decorum and don’t disrespect him. Remember the blessing comes from God. A woman that sees God’s perspective when it comes to the marriage institution will not misbehave when blessed. God has chosen to bless your family through you. Be humbled by the blessing and obedient to God’s order. To both man and wife: keep praying for each other’s success. Both of you should do your best, no one taking advantage of the other. Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi رحمه الله states: الديون نوعان: ديون طويلة الأجل، فالدولة أحياناً تعطي بعض الناس لبناء مسكن على أن يسدده في عشرين أو ثلاثين سنة، والدين مثلاً مليون ريال أو مليون درهم، هذا الدين الطويل لا يمنع الزكاة وإلا فإن الإنسان سيظل إلى ما شاء الله من السنين، يكون عنده مال ويقول أنا مدين بمثله أو بأكثر منه. إنما يُسقِط هذا الدَين الزكاة في قسطه السنوي، كأن يكون عليه في الشهر 2000 درهم، وفي السنة 24000 درهم يمنع الزكاة بمقدار 24000 درهم، أما الدين طويل الأجل لا يمنع الزكاة، أما الديون قصيرة الأجل فهي تمنع الزكاة، ما لم يكن قاصداً أنه يستدين ليمنع الزكاة، فيلجأ إليها كحيلة حتى لا يدفع الزكاة، وهو ليس في حاجة إلى الدَين،فهنا يعامل بنقيض قصده، أما إن كان مديناً بأكثر مما يملك أو لم يبق له نصاب أو أكثر من نصاب، فلا زكاة عليه حتى يقضي هذا الدين، إذا كان دينًا قصير الأجل. والله أعلم.

Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi رحمه الله states: الديون نوعان: ديون طويلة الأجل، فالدولة أحياناً تعطي بعض الناس لبناء مسكن على أن يسدده في عشرين أو ثلاثين سنة، والدين مثلاً مليون ريال أو مليون درهم، هذا الدين الطويل لا يمنع الزكاة وإلا فإن الإنسان سيظل إلى ما شاء الله من السنين، يكون عنده مال ويقول أنا مدين بمثله أو بأكثر منه. إنما يُسقِط هذا الدَين الزكاة في قسطه السنوي، كأن يكون عليه في الشهر 2000 درهم، وفي السنة 24000 درهم يمنع الزكاة بمقدار 24000 درهم، أما الدين طويل الأجل لا يمنع الزكاة، أما الديون قصيرة الأجل فهي تمنع الزكاة، ما لم يكن قاصداً أنه يستدين ليمنع الزكاة، فيلجأ إليها كحيلة حتى لا يدفع الزكاة، وهو ليس في حاجة إلى الدَين،فهنا يعامل بنقيض قصده، أما إن كان مديناً بأكثر مما يملك أو لم يبق له نصاب أو أكثر من نصاب، فلا زكاة عليه حتى يقضي هذا الدين، إذا كان دينًا قصير الأجل. والله أعلم.

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote launched a public offer for shares in his 700,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery, creating what is set to become the largest initial public offering in African history. Dangote is offering approximately 3.3% of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals to the public in a deal expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion, approximately US$1.6 billion or R25.5 billion. The refinery has been valued at roughly US$47 billion, approximately R730 billion, making the offering one of the most significant events ever recorded in Africa’s capital markets. The Dangote Refinery is the world’s largest single-train oil refinery, it has the largest refining capacity in the world built around one crude-distillation unit. It is currently designed to process about 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Shares are being offered at ₦525 each, approximately US$0.40 or R6.20, with a minimum investment of 10 shares costing ₦5,250, approximately US$4 or R62, designed to allow ordinary Nigerians to participate. Dangote said he does not want to be referred to as the richest African, but as the wealthiest, because he wants to create wealth for other ordinary Africans. The public offering transforms Dangote’s flagship refinery from a privately controlled industrial project into a company partly owned by Nigerian citizens and eligible investors. It also signals a major shift in how African businesses can raise capital, expand production and give local people a stake in the continent’s industrial future. Built at a cost of US$20 billion, about R310 billion, the refinery began operating in 2024 and is now producing at full capacity. Its output has helped Nigeria move away from dependence on imported refined petroleum products and towards becoming a regional exporter of fuel. Dangote plans to use the proceeds from the offering to expand the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day over the next three years. The public offer also forms part of Dangote’s wider ambition to build African companies capable of competing on a global scale, something that is still a pipe dream in many African countries. His group of companies already operates across cement, sugar, salt, fertiliser, petrochemicals, logistics, power generation and shipping in more than a dozen African countries. This is why Dangote’s achievement matters beyond Nigeria. Africa has spent decades exporting raw materials, importing finished products and sending its capital abroad. Dangote’s refinery represents an attempt to reverse that pattern by building large-scale manufacturing capacity on African soil, creating jobs, supplying regional markets and keeping more value within the continent. The offering has been marketed as a “people’s IPO”, and demand from retail investors has reportedly been strong, with some digital investment platforms struggling to cope with the interest. The refinery’s eventual expansion could make it one of the largest in the world and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major energy hub. There are also important lessons here for countries such as Zimbabwe. Dangote’s success was not built on political slogans or investment summit announcements. It required long-term capital, industrial planning, infrastructure, technical expertise, policy support and a market large enough to sustain production. In May, Dangote named 10 African countries he considered promising investment destinations, but Zimbabwe was absent despite his recent visit to the country. That omission should prompt serious reflection on whether our leaders are serious at all about the country’s growth. A visit by a wealthy investor, a photograph with government officials or a public promise of cooperation does not amount to investor confidence. Investors look for consistent policies, reliable infrastructure, political stability, transparency, enforceable contracts, functional institutions and the rule of law. Dangote’s refinery shows what African capital can achieve when it is directed towards production rather than speculation and conspicuous consumption. It also demonstrates that ordinary Nigerians and other eligible investors can become shareholders in major national enterprises when governments and business leaders create credible public markets. The larger message is that Africa’s future will not be secured by exporting raw materials and begging foreign companies to build everything for us. It will be secured by African entrepreneurs building serious industries, African governments creating conditions that attract and retain capital, and African citizens acquiring a meaningful stake in the wealth produced on their own continent. Well done to Dangote. He gives hope to African entrepreneurs and to ordinary citizens. It is truly inspiring and deeply emotional to see the wealthiest Black man in the world, an African, reaching out to fellow Africans and giving ordinary Black Africans an opportunity to own a stake in his wealth. This is the direction Africa must take: building African-owned industries, expanding public participation and ensuring that ordinary citizens can share in the continent’s economic success. It has always been embarrassing that Nigeria and many African oil-rich countries export crude oil and import petrol and diesel. It was even more embarrassing for me as an African, when I was in Nigeria, to see fuel queues due to shortages in an oil-producing country. Thanks to Dangote, Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined fuel has been reduced, and the country now has the capacity to supply its domestic market and export refined products.

Former Conservative MP Gladu facing fierce backlash after joining Carney Liberals Sarnia, Ont., is home to a massive petrochemical industry. It is also home to the latest floor-crosser: Conservative-now-Liberal MP Marilyn Gladu. Gladu is the fifth floor-crosser in as many months. But Gladu’s crossing is surely the most shocking. We say this because Gladu was perhaps the single most conservative MP in the entire Conservative Party. For example, she was openly pro-life and pushed to reopen the abortion debate. She unapologetically backed the truckers and the Freedom Convoy. And she was against the COVID-19 forced vaccinations and lockdowns. Gladu is (or was) the polar opposite of a Liberal. Gladu joining the Liberals would be akin to climate change kook Steven Guilbeault joining the Conservatives. It’s that crazy. And talk about hypocrisy: Marilyn Gladu once said that the whole point of being a member of Parliament is “to represent your constituents.” In that regard, in the last federal election, the constituents of Sarnia-Lambton gave Gladu a clear mandate when she ran for re-election as a Conservative. Gladu captured 53.1% of the vote versus 37.9% for the Liberal candidate. Amazingly, Gladu recently voiced strong opinions about those MPs who decided to cross the floor. If such a thing happens, Gladu said, then voters “deserve a chance to have a redo.” But as the saying goes, that was then and this is now. She is no longer keen on a “redo” byelection in her riding. Why? Because she’d likely lose in a landslide. And in the department of plenty of blame to go around, the Mark Carney Liberals seemingly have absolutely no problem welcoming Gladu into the fold even though she is the sort of Conservative who would be mocked by the Liberals for her viewpoints. As well, this is the same party that has a policy that blocks pro-life candidates from running under the Liberal banner. But again, that was then and this is now as Mark Carney remains committed to getting that coveted majority government – a majority the Canadian electorate denied him in last year’s federal election (but seriously, who cares what the little people have to say?) So it is that the Liberals will park their principles when it comes to Carney manufacturing the political equivalent of a hostile takeover. Last weekend, we visited the riding of Sarnia-Lambton to see what the people in this border city have to say. Most said they were shocked and angry. And not only did we meet people who voted for Gladu in the last election, but we spoke with others who were volunteers on Gladu’s last campaign and donors. Said one miffed man: “I want my money back.” For what it’s worth, here’s the official statement by Gladu as to why she changed her allegiances: "Dear citizens of Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong, “The past year has been like no other that Canada has ever faced, and I’ve heard clearly from constituents that you want serious leadership and a real plan to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy. “That is why I have decided to join Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canada’s new government as the newest member of his caucus. It is a privilege to have served as your Member of Parliament for more than a decade, and I have made a choice to do the best thing for our community’s priorities, and importantly, for our country. “The experience I gained working globally across many sectors will be important to help our Prime Minister continue to deliver on the big priorities he is driving forward: To build the nation at speeds not seen before, create jobs for a prosperous future, build our defence, diversify our trade, build more homes, help lower costs for Canadians, and combat crime. Former Conservative MP Gladu facing fierce backlash after joining Carney Liberals Sarnia, Ont., is home to a massive petrochemical industry. It is also home to the latest floor-crosser: Conservative-now-Liberal MP Marilyn Gladu. Gladu is the fifth floor-crosser in as many months. But Gladu’s crossing is surely the most shocking. We say this because Gladu was perhaps the single most conservative MP in the entire Conservative Party. For example, she was openly pro-life and pushed to reopen the abortion debate. She unapologetically backed the truckers and the Freedom Convoy. And she was against the COVID-19 forced vaccinations and lockdowns. Gladu is (or was) the polar opposite of a Liberal. Gladu joining the Liberals would be akin to climate change kook Steven Guilbeault joining the Conservatives. It’s that crazy. And talk about hypocrisy: Marilyn Gladu once said that the whole point of being a member of Parliament is “to represent your constituents.” In that regard, in the last federal election, the constituents of Sarnia-Lambton gave Gladu a clear mandate when she ran for re-election as a Conservative. Gladu captured 53.1% of the vote versus 37.9% for the Liberal candidate. Amazingly, Gladu recently voiced strong opinions about those MPs who decided to cross the floor. If such a thing happens, Gladu said, then voters “deserve a chance to have a redo.” But as the saying goes, that was then and this is now. She is no longer keen on a “redo” byelection in her riding. Why? Because she’d likely lose in a landslide. And in the department of plenty of blame to go around, the Mark Carney Liberals seemingly have absolutely no problem welcoming Gladu into the fold even though she is the sort of Conservative who would be mocked by the Liberals for her viewpoints. As well, this is the same party that has a policy that blocks pro-life candidates from running under the Liberal banner. But again, that was then and this is now as Mark Carney remains committed to getting that coveted majority government – a majority the Canadian electorate denied him in last year’s federal election (but seriously, who cares what the little people have to say?) So it is that the Liberals will park their principles when it comes to Carney manufacturing the political equivalent of a hostile takeover. Last weekend, we visited the riding of Sarnia-Lambton to see what the people in this border city have to say. Most said they were shocked and angry. And not only did we meet people who voted for Gladu in the last election, but we spoke with others who were volunteers on Gladu’s last campaign and donors. In the past, there have been similar cases where producers and artists were tightly knit. Now, something similar has happened with Min Hee-jin and HYBE. Most people outside the industry don’t know the exact terms of the contract between Min Hee-jin and HYBE. As my own son works in the entertainment field, I’m well aware of how important it is to work with a good producer. For a company like HYBE, which has invested tens or even hundreds of billions of won, it’s unthinkable that they would allow NewJeans to separate and go independent after establishing their position. Many in the industry agree that this doesn’t make sense. To the general public, NewJeans might seem like the underdogs, and people might feel they should be allowed to leave. But from the perspective of the entertainment industry, which requires substantial capital to grow, the relationship between investors and artists is key. You can’t discuss this industry without acknowledging the role of investors. This case is different from situations where individual members leave, as seen in the past with groups that had Chinese members. This isn’t about a single member leaving; it’s more about the fact that, in this industry, the producers are as important as the artists themselves. From the beginning, NewJeans has been marketed as Min Hee-jin’s girl group, so the idea of them continuing without her feels different. We need to approach this from a different angle. That said, it doesn’t mean HYBE should completely cut ties. Many people have different initial thoughts about the situation, but the core issue here is the importance of the relationship between producers and the company, especially when substantial investment is involved. From my perspective, the fundamental question is: what exactly was attempted? I still find this unclear. In any company, it's common to hear people say, "I want to quit, I can't work with this boss, I'm leaving tomorrow." We all talk about this with friends or colleagues. Sometimes, we even ask others to let us know if there’s a good opportunity elsewhere. But actually submitting a resignation is a whole different issue. But in the new premise, I still wonder what exactly they were trying to do. What exactly was attempted? We always talk about it at work, right? "I'm going to quit. I can't work with that boss anymore. I'm leaving tomorrow." We always have those conversations. We talk about it with our friends, with team members, and even ask friends outside of work to let us know if they hear of any good positions. But actually submitting a resignation is a whole different issue, isn't it? Looking at how the situation first unfolded, it seems like HYBE was the one to bring things to light. They shared a lot with the press, and Min Hee-jin, the CEO, responded with a strong counterstatement. HYBE was saying, "Min Hee-jin is trying to do this and that," but CEO Min was like, "What else have I done apart from that message on KakaoTalk?" The court also judged that they weren't sure what actions had actually been attempted. To me, this seems like the fact of the matter. Clearly, HYBE's relationship with CEO Min Hee-jin might not be good. There could have been friction about how a subsidiary operates so independently from the parent company. There were likely various issues internally, but they should have been resolved within the company without making the problems visible externally. These days, if you ask middle or elementary school students what they want to be when they grow up, many of them will say they want to become idols or YouTubers. They believe that with enough effort, they can make it. The entertainment industry needs to be able to channel that passion and potential into something positive. She mentioned once that “everyone is crazy about money,” and I think that’s why there would be a long line of people wanting to meet with her if she decided to move on. The first time a dog that has never lived indoors realizes there is a floor that doesn't move, a door that closes without danger, and a bowl that will be full again tomorrow. Rescuers have a rule of thumb for this, the 3-3-3 rule. Three days for a dog to decompress. Three weeks to start learning the routine. Three months to feel truly at home. SONYA: These days, I’m also waiting for good opportunities from all the people in the industry. But it’s okay. We’ve gotten to meet so many fans this year. I’d say that’s already very much a complete goal that I had set for myself this year. Thank you for every opportunity that has come our way, because we’re working really, really hard. Because I honestly don’t know… Over the past several days, I’ve also come across some things. Um… and they were negative, though. They weren’t from you guys, Phi Phi okay? They were negative comments, like, “Lookmhee and Sonya don’t have any work that’s… international,” or, what do you call it, work that’s worldwide, like other people have, something along those lines. But Sonya also understands the context of everything. I feel like everything depends on our opportunities and our timing too. Sometimes something might not happen today, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. Because these days, we’re working really hard, and we really enjoy getting to meet so many fans. Honestly, that alone is enough. What do you call it? We’re already very happy with that. Not spoiling anything , right? (Reading a comment from a fan.) It’s just… it makes me sad 😂, you know? What kind of person do you all think Sonya is? I’m not spoiling anything!! I’m just telling you about it because I feel like, over the past several days, there have been quite a few things that we’ve seen, and they’ve also made me think. But actually, with those things, if we don’t take them as meaning that we haven’t achieved anything yet… you know what I mean? Because I don’t know… What counts as success is different for everyone anyway. I feel that where we are today is already much further than what we ever expected. We have so many fans who love us and support our work. Sometimes people may think negatively in that way, like… “Maybe we just aren’t… aren’t good enough yet,” or something like that. There can be a lot of thoughts like that. But I think it can also become something that pushes us forward, and gives us motivation to keep working on so many other things. Today may not be our day. But maybe in the future, it will be. Right? We just have to wait for the right time. Everything has its own timing. Because from what Sonya has experienced and understood, I know that everything has its own time. I’ve been in this industry since I was 7 years old. And it took all this time to get to where I am today… I mean, it took that long before I had the opportunity to really have my moment in the entertainment industry, before the people in the industry gave me the best opportunities. Everything has its own timing. Sonya got to act in the series Affair for the first time when I was 22–23, right? Around that age. From 7 years old until 23, it was only then that Sonya got that opportunity. And there’s never a day when it’s too late. Nothing is ever too late. I’m so happy. I’m really, really happy that from now until the end of this year, everyone… We don’t have work every single day, but we do have a lot of work. And on the days when I disappear, I already know that our fans—whether Thai fans or international fans—will miss us. So we’ll try to keep updating our social media so everyone won’t miss us too much. Like seemingly everyone on this app I have plenty of opinions about Twitter > X and figure now is a good time to open up a bit about my experience at the company. I tweeted for years into the void for the love of it like many of you, but after selling my startup to Twitter in 2020 I finally got to see it from the inside. Up close it was both amazing and terrible, like so many other companies and things in life. As someone with a maniacal sense of urgency built into me, Twitter often felt siloed and bureaucratic. Dumb power plays, reorgs and team name changes for the sake of someone’s ego were distractions that occurred too regularly. You couldn’t just be a builder — you also needed to be a politician. I was shocked by how old and bespoke the infrastructure was, but there was little will to think beyond quarterly earnings calls because we were all beholden to the masters of mDAU and revenue growth as a public company. It often felt like things were held together with duct tape and glue, and that many people had just accepted that a small product change could take months or quarters to build. Management had become bloated to accommodate career growth and the company culture felt too soft and entitled for my own taste. Healthy debate and criticism was replaced by a default refrain of “no, that can’t be done” or “another team owns that so don’t touch it”. Teams could spend months building a feature and then some last-minute kerfuffle meant it’d get killed for being too risky. Despite those real issues, I was lucky enough to work with some of the most talented people in the business at Twitter in product, design, engineering, research, legal, BD, trust & safety, marketing, PR and more. Often it was a small cross-functional team of intrinsically motivated people who made the biggest impact by challenging some core assumption. My take on what’s happened since then is full of lived nuance. When people ask why I stayed it’s easy to answer: optimism, curiosity, personal growth and money. From the beginning I saw that some changes Elon was going to make were smart and others were stupid, but when I’m on a team I uphold the philosophy of “praise in public and criticize in private”. I was far from a silent wallflower. I shared my opinions openly and pushed back often, both before and after the acquisition. I made peace with the fact that I didn’t have psychological safety at Twitter 2.0 and that meant I could be fired at any moment, and for no reason at all. Although I couldn’t change the situation I did my best to shine a light on folks who were doing important work while being an emotionally supportive leader for those who were struggling to adapt to the more brutalist and hardcore culture. Figuring out how to keep “better angels” around in the form of family, friends, and teammates is critical to staying on the rails and enduring intense ups and downs. Everyone needs to hear hard truths sometimes and if you fire all the people who speak up then the reality distortion field may just turn into a vortex. I was drawn to Twitter because I’m obsessed with the problem of loneliness and connection between people. I find it fascinating & troubling that humans are getting lonelier as we simultaneously create a world that’s both safer and wealthier. I don’t believe that trade-off has to exist, which is why I keep returning to that theme in my personal and professional life. I realize this is too long of a tweet but Twitter was a weird and special place on the internet, and I’m grateful to have played a teeny tiny role in its story and evolution. I’m here for whatever comes next — on this app and in new places. I tweeted for years into the void for the love of it like many of you, but after selling my startup to Twitter in 2020 I finally got to see it from the inside. Up close it was both amazing and terrible, like so many other companies and things in life. As someone with a maniacal sense of urgency built into me, Twitter often felt siloed and bureaucratic. Dumb power plays, reorgs and team name changes for the sake of someone’s ego were distractions that occurred too regularly. You couldn’t just be a builder — you also needed to be a politician. I was shocked by how old and bespoke the infrastructure was, but there was little will to think beyond quarterly earnings calls because we were all beholden to the masters of mDAU and revenue growth as a public company. It often felt like things were held together with duct tape and glue, and that many people had just accepted that a small product change could take months or quarters to build. Management had become bloated to accommodate career growth and the company culture felt too soft and entitled for my own taste. Healthy debate and criticism was replaced by a default refrain of “no, that can’t be done” or “another team owns that so don’t touch it”.
