Water mixed with sewage. This is what you see in many of the flooding videos coming out of Gaza, and the reason behind this is the complete destruction of the sewage system by the military occupation. So many people are now exposed to bacterial and viral infections and diseases as a result of the rainstorms and flooding, and struggling to have accessibility to medical treatment - due entirely to the complete collapse of the medical system and limiting support allowed to enter, also by the military occupation. With the ceasefire signed and goods promised to enter Gaza, we are still waiting for one of the most important aid items: MEDICATION. More than 70% of types of medication are not available in Gaza. What is available is difficult to find and expensive for patients that have no income or means to pay. At the Refaat Alareer Camp we have some of the most serious medical cases, that should be in hospitals, but because of overcrowding they are discharged to tents. Requests for medical help come in daily. The occupation’s attacks on the healthcare system has rendered all hospitals only partially functioning and clinics have been destroyed. We saw this need for supplemental medical care and we stepped up with your help. It cost approximately $20,000 per month to keep just one of our medical points stocked with gauze, bandages, medicine, saline, IV’s, and other necessities. Nebulizer machines, blood pressure equipment, oximeters, secretion suction machines, are all added costs. Many of our patients need hard to find treatment for seizures like Keppra. And we supply it all to them for free to aid in their rehabilitation and maintenance. We need your help supporting the sick and the injured in Gaza. I have followed with deep concern recent reports of suspected organ trafficking involving Mediheal Hospital and other health facilities in Kenya. It should disturb the nation to watch the testimonials of Amon Kipruto Mely, his mother Leah Metto, Kennedy and other Kenyans who are victims of these heinous acts. If confirmed, these allegations are outrageous violations of Article 28 of the Constitution-the Right to Dignity and a potential threat to the Right to Life (Article 26). It is worth noting that various medical associations have raised alarm over allegations of organ trafficking since May 2023. The government has largely ignored those reports. Kenya Kwanza is only taking action now following international media uproar. This is yet another confirmation that this government only acts when its international reputation is at stake. I take note of the establishment of the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services by the Health Cabinet Secretary. This Committee must not become yet again another PR stunt that does not address the broken healthcare system and rampant disregard for human life and dignity. I call on the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDU), as the body mandated to regulate medical practitioners and healthcare facilities, to carry out its duties with utmost professionalism and integrity to protect the lives of Kenyans. The health of our people is the wealth of our country. We must do all we can to protect citizens from exploitation. It is critical that we address the poverty that is driving so many young people to be exploited by criminal groups trafficking organs and kidneys. الليلة الأولى… وغزة تعود إلى محرابها في الليلة الأولى من شهر رمضان المبارك، عادت غزة إلى محرابها، لا بمساجد من حجارة، بل بمساجد صنعتها الخيام. بعد أن دمّر الاحتلال المساجد، لم ينتظر أهل غزة الإسمنت ولا الإعمار، أقاموا بيوت الله من القماش، وثبّتوا أعمدتها بالصبر، وفرشوا أرضها بقلوبٍ خاشعة. هرولت الجموع إلى صلاة التراويح بكل حبٍ وشغفٍ واشتياق، ازدحمت الصفوف، وتعانقت الأرواح، وكأن المدينة كانت تنتظر هذه اللحظة منذ عامين من الإبادة والقتل، حتى روّاد المساجد لم يسلموا من الاستهداف. لكن الليلة… عاد القرآن يُتلى بين الركام، وعادت الصفوف تنتظم، وعادت غزة إلى سيرتها الأولى… بل أقوى. وهذا شيخنا الدكتور حسام النفّار بصوته العذب يؤمّ المصلين في مسجد الكنز بمدينة غزة، صوتٌ ملائكيّ ينساب في القلوب، فيطمئن الخائف، ويجبر المكسور، ويعلن أن الروح لا تُهزم. غزة الليلة لا تُصلّي فقط… غزة تنهض من جديد. تنهض من المساجد، ومن روّادها، ومن أئمتها، ومن الخيام التي تحوّلت إلى منارات نور. نُدمَّر… لكننا لا ننكسر. نبدأ من السجود… وننهض بالدعاء. WHO delivers health supplies to Al-Shifa Hospital, appeals for continued access to address urgent needs in north #Gaza WHO staff participated in a joint UN mission to Al-Shifa Hospital in north Gaza on 16 December to deliver health supplies and assess the situation in the facility. Partners on today’s mission included OCHA, UNDSS, and UNMAS. The team delivered medicines and surgical supplies, orthopedic surgery equipment, and anesthesia materials and drugs to the hospital. Al-Shifa Hospital, currently minimally functional, needs to urgently resume at least basic operations to continue serving the thousands in need of lifesaving health care.Once the most important and largest referral hospital in Gaza, Al-Shifa now houses only a handful of doctors and a few nurses, together with 70 volunteers, working under what WHO staff described as “unbelievably challenging circumstances" and calling it a “hospital in need of resuscitation.” The operating theatres and other major services remain nonfunctional due to a lack of fuel, oxygen, specialized medical staff, and supplies. The hospital is only able to provide basic trauma stabilization, has no blood for transfusion, and hardly any staff to care for the constant flow of patients. Dialysis is being provided to approximately 30 patients a day, with the dialysis machines operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using a small generator.The team described the emergency department as a “bloodbath”, with hundreds of injured patients inside and new patients arriving every minute. Patients with trauma injuries were being sutured on the floor, and limited to no pain management is available at the hospital. WHO staff said that the emergency department is so full that care must be exercised to not step on patients on the floor. Critical patients are being transferred to Al-Ahli Arab Hospital for surgeries. Tens of thousands of displaced people are using the hospital building and grounds for shelter. A multi-pronged humanitarian response is needed to provide them with food, water and shelter. Many of them asked our team to tell the world what is happening in the hope that their suffering might soon be eased. Al-Shifa Hospital continues to experience a severe shortage of food and safe water for health workers, patients, and displaced people. This reflects grave and growing concerns around persistent hunger across the Gaza Strip, and the consequences of malnutrition on people’s health and susceptibility to infectious diseases. WHO is committed to strengthening Al-Shifa Hospital in the coming weeks, so that it can resume at least basic functionality and continue to provide the lifesaving services that are needed at this critical time. Up to 20 operating theatres in the hospital, as well as post-operative care services, can be activated if provided with regular supplies of fuel, oxygen, medicines, food, and water. Substantial additional specialized medical, nursing and support staff, including emergency medical teams, are also urgently needed.Currently, Al-Ahli Arab Hospital remains the only partially functional hospital in north Gaza, along with three minimally functional hospitals—Al-Shifa, Al Awda and Al Sahaba Medical Complex—down from 24 before the conflict. WHO is also gravely concerned about the unfolding situation at Kamal Adwan Hospital and is gathering information urgently. After we successfully called on the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Education to reconsider the increase in WAEC and NECO examination fees, another concerning issue has emerged. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has introduced a sudden increase in the registration fee for foreign-trained medical graduates. Foreign-trained doctors in Nigeria are now facing an unexpected financial burden just weeks before their induction. On Friday, the MDCN informed successful foreign-trained medical graduates via email that the registration fee would be ₦250,000, plus ₦15,000 for insurance, bringing the total to ₦265,000. However, on the 13th, another email was sent asking recipients to disregard the previous one. The registration fee had been increased to ₦400,000, with ₦15,000 for insurance, making the new total ₦415,000—a ₦150,000 increase announced less than two weeks before induction. This is the reality currently facing foreign-trained medical graduates in Nigeria. Where does the MDCN expect these 238 newly qualified doctors to find ₦415,000 within such a short period just to obtain their practising licences? I am calling on the Federal Ministry of Health, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), and the Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently reconsider this decision. This policy will not strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system. Nigeria is already experiencing a severe shortage of medical doctors, with fewer than 55,000 doctors serving a population of over 220 million people. The government should consider subsidising this registration fee instead of placing an additional financial burden on young doctors who are ready to serve the nation. This sweet father, Mahdi, has three boys, the youngest two are completely blind and have brain atrophy. Both boys were born during the genocide, no telling if their condition is genetic, or what they have been diagnosed with - an infection that the mother had in her, passed on during pregnancy, affecting the fetus. An infection from contaminated water? From a respiratory illness? A parasite? Raw sewage? All conditions created by the occupation. Support: These children born in 2023 and 2025 suffer from the results of minimal prenatal care and screenings for their mother and the lack of proper testing when they were born, all because the medical infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed. What we can do now is support them with medication and proper nutrition to minimize their hardships. On January 25 The Sameer Project provided them with 4 cans of milk formulas, 2 packs of diapers, and the medication (anti-seizure) that the boys need. This cost $230 after 11% commission. Anticonvulsants are very difficult to source in Gaza, STILL, post “ceasefire” since the occupation withholds the medication and medical supplies from entering the strip. So while not all their medication was available we provided what we could, again another crime the occupations committing - limiting access to healthcare.
