It was the last few days of Ramadan. Families had plans to gather and celebrate, but the ceasefire abruptly and violently ended a week prior. This is when 14 year old Hassan was injured with stray shrapnel that pierced through his skull and into his brain and eye. Help with his care: Hassan’s treatment is not available in Gaza. Like so many others he awaits evacuation with a referral report grading his condition as “emergency.” But with ongoing evacuation orders and incessant bombings it’s been weeks since the last medical evacuation, and the World Health Organization has yet to contact Hassan regarding treatment abroad. Hassan and his family have been living at our Refaat Alareer Camp and receiving medical treatment including physiotherapy, wound cleaning, and symptom management for his eye. He has seen specialists at every hospital in the North and the South and The Sameer Project team is doing everything to keep him calm and comfortable and manage his pain. Medical evacuations are nuanced, rare, and so difficult. We need to allow patients to receive lifesaving care outside of Gaza’s destroyed medical system.
