He was knighted in October of 2022 for outstanding contributions to film. He was also made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1991, and a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2007.

His roots are in Northern Ireland. I suspect his parent's were 'Ten Pound Pommes', he was born in New Zealand

I believe he was born there to a NZ father stationed there and an English Mother they moved back to NZ when he was 7 and he became a NZ citizen.

His father was a Kiwi serving in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. His great grandfather was a wine merchant who immigrated to New Zealand in 1863.
