Kokonoe is my favorite character throughout the entire BLAZBLUE series. There are many reasons why I love her. 🎉🎉 The first reason is that I generally prefer intelligent characters in fiction. Kokonoe is undoubtedly one of the most intelligent characters in the entire BLAZBLUE universe. She is a scientist who holds a high-ranking position within Sector Seven, one of the most powerful factions in the BLAZBLUE world, and that alone says a lot about just how brilliant she is. She is not simply a character who is considered intelligent because of her reputation, either. Kokonoe is a genuine scientific genius whose knowledge extends across an enormous number of fields. Her intelligence may even connect to another aspect of her character that I find amusing: her constant consumption of sweets. Kokonoe is almost always seen with some kind of candy, especially her signature lollipop. She seems to use sweets to keep herself going while she works. I think this fits her character surprisingly well because sugar is one of the primary sources of energy used by the brain. Her obsession with sweets also seems to be something she inherited from her mother, Nine, who was likewise an incredibly intelligent woman and a major sweet tooth. Kokonoe is also known for collecting sweets from around the world, so this is not simply a random character quirk. It is a consistent part of who she is. Another reason I like Kokonoe is how well her personality matches her appearance. She has very obvious cat-like features, and her personality itself reminds me of a cat. She does whatever she wants and generally prioritizes whatever makes her comfortable. She does not care much about conventional social expectations or how other people think she is supposed to behave. I find that incredibly charming. This is also reflected in Kokonoe's character design. Despite being an extremely intelligent scientist who holds an important position within Sector Seven, she does not exactly dress like someone who cares about maintaining a professional image. Her stomach is exposed, she wears sandals instead of formal shoes, and her red capri pants are lowered enough to reveal part of her black underwear. Her appearance itself almost seems to send the message, “I couldn't care less about whether I look professional.” And honestly, I think that suits Kokonoe perfectly. Her lack of concern for social conventions and professionalism also extends to the way she speaks. Kokonoe is extremely foul-mouthed, casually swearing and throwing profanity into her conversations as naturally as she breathes. She does not suddenly become polite simply because she is speaking to someone powerful, either. Even people with enormous reputations are not necessarily safe from her sharp tongue. I find this aspect of her personality incredibly entertaining because it reinforces the idea that Kokonoe simply does not care about social conventions. She is going to say whatever she wants, wear whatever she wants, and act however she wants. Her extremely short temper is another aspect of her personality that I really enjoy. Kokonoe can become angry incredibly quickly, whether she is dealing with an enemy, a subordinate, or even someone who is technically supposed to be her ally. This can lead to some genuinely funny and interesting interactions, especially because she is surrounded by characters who are often vastly more powerful than the average person. Despite this, Kokonoe has absolutely no problem being rude to people who could probably kill her if they really wanted to. The final major reason I love Kokonoe is her morality. Kokonoe is genuinely a morally gray character, and I think that makes her far more interesting than if she were simply a good person who happened to be a genius. If she believes that something will ultimately accomplish her goals, she has no problem breaking laws, manipulating people, using underhanded tactics, or doing morally questionable things. One of the clearest examples of this is the fact that she has nuclear weapons readily available. This is obviously the kind of thing that would make even someone like Hakumen seriously wonder what exactly she has stored in her laboratory. Kokonoe is essentially the kind of person who can casually have weapons of mass destruction sitting around while continuing to work on whatever scientific project she happens to be obsessed with at the moment. Another example of her questionable morality involves Celica. Kokonoe is willing to sacrifice Celica if she believes that doing so will ultimately lead to a better outcome. The fact that Kokonoe can look at an actual living person and essentially decide, “Yes, this person needs to be sacrificed for the greater good,” says a lot about the way she thinks. It is also completely understandable that Ragna becomes angry when he discovers what she is willing to do. However, what I find especially interesting is that Kokonoe is not completely heartless. Beneath all of her arrogance, hostility, profanity, and morally questionable decisions, she genuinely cares about certain people. Her relationship with Tager is a good example of this. This creates an interesting contradiction within Kokonoe's character. When she believes it is necessary, she is perfectly capable of treating people as tools. At the same time, she is also capable of forming genuine attachments and deeply caring about the people who are important to her. I also love the fact that Kokonoe's theme song is titled “Science Fiction.” Kokonoe Mercury is one of the most scientifically minded characters in the entire BLAZBLUE series, so it makes perfect sense that her character theme, “Science Fiction,” reflects her personality through its instrumentation and sound design. “Science Fiction” is not simply a conventional rock song, nor is it entirely electronic. It combines acoustic instruments, rock instrumentation, synthesizers, and electronic effects to create a sound that feels scientific, technological, experimental, and futuristic. As a result, the song feels like more than just background music that plays during a battle. It musically represents Kokonoe herself as a scientist, engineer, and weapons designer. In particular, the electronic sounds and synthesized tones can evoke computers, machines, and experimental equipment. At the same time, the guitar, bass, and drums give the song the aggression and energy associated with Kokonoe's combat abilities. The addition of more human and organic sounds, such as the piano, prevents the song from becoming nothing more than “machine music” and instead gives it a sense of intelligence and personality. In other words, “Science Fiction” represents Kokonoe herself through music. Science and magic, technology and humanity, intelligence and violence—all of these different elements that make up her character coexist within the song. That is why it is one of my favorite character themes in the entire BLAZBLUE series. Overall, the reasons I consider Kokonoe such an amazing character are her unique character design, her incredible intelligence and eccentric personality, her vulgar and sharp-tongued way of speaking, her short temper, and above all, her morally gray approach to accomplishing her goals. Depending on the situation, she can be brilliant, funny, aggressive, foul-mouthed, caring, selfish, and downright terrifying. What I especially love is that these traits do not feel like a collection of completely separate character quirks. Instead, they all complement one another and come together to create a cohesive character. Kokonoe is, essentially, a genius mad scientist with cat ears, a massive sweet tooth, a foul mouth, a short temper, a questionable moral compass, and enough scientific knowledge to make everyone around her nervous. And that combination is exactly why I love Kokonoe so much. 👍
