🎵🎶 Relius Clover is another extremely interesting villain, but for very different reasons than Yūki Terumi. While Terumi fundamentally derives pleasure from sadism and from making other people suffer, Relius doesn't necessarily make causing pain his primary objective. Instead, he calmly commits horrific acts in pursuit of knowledge, research, experimentation, and the creation of things that he finds "interesting." That is precisely why I think Relius is frightening in a different way. He is extremely intelligent, and because of his desire to understand life, souls, and existence itself, he is capable of treating human beings as nothing more than experimental materials. His relentless pursuit of knowledge contributed to catastrophes such as the Black Beast. Furthermore, the fact that he was willing to conduct inhumane experiments even on his own wife and daughter shows how completely his curiosity about knowledge and creation has surpassed his sense of morality as a human being. However, Relius's most terrifying "creation" might not be one of his machines or experiments. It might be his own son, Carl. Relius did not merely use his son as a weapon. He implanted his own twisted ideology into Carl, causing his son to gradually adopt values similar to those of his father. Carl's transformation demonstrates just how terrifying Relius is as a father. His greatest "legacy" isn't something he created in a laboratory, but the fact that he passed his distorted philosophy down to his own child. This is one of the reasons I love the villains in BlazBlue. The villains in BlazBlue aren't all the same type of "evil." Terumi is an irredeemably sadistic monster who enjoys manipulating, tormenting, despairing, and destroying other people. Relius, on the other hand, is a cold intellectual whose obsession with knowledge is so strong that he can justify atrocities that an ordinary person could never even imagine committing. Hazama is a particularly interesting character who seems to occupy a position somewhere between them. He acts like a polite and playful gentleman, while beneath the surface possessing the same kind of dangerous ability to manipulate people that makes Terumi so dangerous. Relius has an especially striking design, with his long purple cloak, elaborate and intricate clothing, and distinctive mask. Just looking at his design gives you the impression that he is someone who doesn't fit into ordinary society. There is something theatrical, aristocratic, and yet almost otherworldly about his appearance, and I think that fits his personality extremely well. Relius carries himself like a sophisticated gentleman and intellectual, but the mask covering his eyes gives him an unsettling and almost inhuman appearance. It makes him look like someone who is constantly observing and analyzing the people around him while never allowing others to see his true nature. I also think Relius's purple-based color scheme works extremely well. Purple evokes ideas of nobility, sophistication, mystery, and extravagance, which fits his elegant yet unsettling atmosphere. His elaborate clothing also makes him look less like an ordinary scientist and more like an "evil aristocratic inventor." That is particularly appropriate for Relius's personality. He doesn't think of himself as simply a madman who commits atrocities for no reason. He seems to regard himself as an intellectual creator who pursues knowledge and creates new things. The problem is that his curiosity has carried him far beyond the moral boundaries that an ordinary human being would normally refuse to cross. The theatrical aspect of his personality is also reflected very well in his design. Relius doesn't look like an ordinary researcher wearing a lab coat. Instead, he has a distinctive elegance that makes it seem as though he views his experiments and creations almost as works of art. Because of that elegance, the fact that he can casually discuss horrifying things without hesitation becomes even more disturbing. The BlazBlue song “Plastic Night” fits Relius’s character design and personality exceptionally well. The opening strings, particularly during the first 20 seconds, have a grand, ominous orchestral quality. They almost sound like the beginning of an opera or a dramatic stage production, which fits Relius extraordinarily well. Relius is strongly associated with opera and theatricality, and the opening of “Plastic Night” seems to emphasize that aspect of his character and design. However, the chorus sounds equally theatrical and haunting at the same time. The haunting quality is especially fitting for Relius, considering how dangerous he is to anyone he considers a potential test subject. His lack of moral restraint toward his experiments makes the beautiful yet ominous sound of the chorus feel almost like a musical representation of the danger lurking beneath his sophisticated and theatrical exterior.
