Open source is dead. That’s not a statement we ever thought we’d make. Cal.com was built on open source. It shaped our product, our community, and our growth. But the world has changed faster than our principles could keep up. AI has fundamentally altered the security landscape. What once required time, expertise, and intent can now be automated at scale. Code is no longer just read. It is scanned, mapped, and exploited. Near zero cost. In that world, transparency becomes exposure. Especially at scale. After a lot of deliberation, we’ve made the decision to close the core Cal.com codebase. This is not a rejection of what open source gave us. It’s a response to what risks AI is making possible. We’re still supporting builders, releasing the core code under a new MIT-licensed open source project called cal. diy for hobbyists and tinkerers, but our priority now is simple: Protecting our customers and community at all costs. 4 years ago we were on the brink of AI becoming proprietary and centralized, when OpenAI kept GPT3 closed and VCs started dumping money on researchers. From fully open science, to fully closed, in a matter of months. It was scary, and 1,000+ leading researchers and scientists banded together to show the world that it was possible to do the same work in the open, and build an ecosystem that benefits everyone. That was the BigScience Research Workshop BLOOM project, and it put us back on track to open science, starting with forward-thinking organizations like Meta releasing OPT. Look at us now. Open models have not only caught up, they're state of the art now. Not just LLMs, but models for document AI, speech to text, text to speech, generating images and more. We're closing in on 2 million open weight models on Hugging Face. Thanks for the reminder Thomas Wolf .

Said this on stage, in front of the world's most powerful people: "The best open source AI models right now come from China. Everybody in the research community is using Chinese models." Here's what makes this more uncomfortable. He said it in the same breath as warning that the US is making a catastrophic mistake. OpenAI — increasingly closed. Anthropic — never open. I bought one. On this day when Om Malik was taken from us, it's worthy of remembering him as a great photographer. I bought one. On this day when Om Malik was taken from us, it's worthy of remembering him as a great photographer. He's the kind of guy who would appreciate a great photo more than anybody, and he made many of them. I've been reading X for the last few minutes, and it's just post after post after post about what he meant to various people in the community. What a loss.

Yep! We spent a 21 months building Werm, and we’re genuinely proud of how we’ve done things. We’ll keep doing everything possible to build great products. What you see now is the result of countless iterations from the version shown in the below video. With just three people, building and scaling a multiplayer game has been incredibly challenging, even large studios struggle with this. The 21 months of development were necessary. We went through multiple rebuilds, learned a ton about launches, and built real relationships across the ecosystem. We stayed away from presales and token launches because the product wasn’t ready. Now we finally feel confident to give it a real shot. There’ll be bumps along the way, but unlike most crypto projects built on hype, we’re launching with an actual product and genuine intent to make it work. We believe we’re doing it the right way and that’s how we plan to keep going. The goal is for the community to trust that when we build, it’s 100% real, never a scam. More news to come about Werm!

It was great to connect with builders, devs, and the AWS team who are all in on GenAI. Lots of real talk about what’s actually working, whats just noise, and how companies are moving AI into production, not just POCs. At TARS AI, we’ve been deep in the lab working on something new and exciting. Events like this give us even more conviction that we’re on the right path.
