The suspects were immediately detained at the scene, and a search of the area revealed additional IEDs located in a parked vehicle adjacent to the event. The two suspects have been identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, both residents of Pennsylvania. More details are expected as the investigation continues. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: A bit of back story is needed to explain the context for how important the attack in New York City actually was. The protest that started everything was an "Americans Against Islamification" protest organized by Jake Lang, who has become infamous for going into Islamic strongholds, and holding protests that are intended to inflame tensions. This context may result in many people being tempted to roll their eyes and dismiss this attack due to the history of Lang's protests usually being rather theatrical. For instance, the day before the IED attack on his group he crashed a vigil to the Ayatollah, driving by the event in a Uhaul van with a goat and an American flag. Theatrics aside, however, Saturday's IED attack was a VERY big deal that should not be ignored as a publicity stunt, because it's possible that this attack inadvertently exposed a much wider and more substantial terrorist network. This hunch is due to the composition of the explosive devices themselves...these were not the standard low-grade pipe-bombs that are the usual terrorist go-to for attacks like this. NYPD officials have stated that the devices were comprised of Triacetone triperoxide (TATP), which is a powerful Homemade Explosive (HME) compound that is highly unstable if made in an improvised weapons lab. Speculating a bit regarding this attack, it is unlikely that a terrorist group would build such substantial IEDs solely to target a dozen people at a pop-up protest. These take time to make, and the protest was only announced a few hours before it began. It is possible to make a batch of TATP in a day, however it's very unlikely that the explosives were made for this specific event. And for a bomb maker who seeks to avoid getting the nickname "lefty" these explosive compounds require some level of competency and experience to make. As a result, it's far more likely that these explosives were intended for some other target, before the last-minute protest caused the target to shift to the most emotionally-motivating target. It's possible that a terrorist cell saw Lang's defilement of the Ayatollah's vigil the previous day, and decided to take some of the pre-made explosives to commit a terror attack the next morning when he announced the protest at Mamdani's residence. If this theory bears any weight, it's possible that there are other individuals elsewhere (either acting on their own, or in coordination with more organized groups) which are probably sitting on similar armaments. Exactly where these cells are located is anyone's guess, but since the two attackers themselves travelled all the way from Pennsylvania to conduct the terror attack, these threats are not endemic to New York City alone. And it’s a problem that shows no signs of ebbing thanks to a complete lack of political will at every government level when it comes to merely enforcing the rules. Recently, Rebel News ventured out to the intersection of Hwy. 50 and Mayfield Road. The area was jammed with transport trucks. Illegal truck yards had shipping containers stacked six high. We met up with Franca Pisani and Amanda Corbett at this intersection; later we went on a not-so-scenic tour of the area. What we witnessed firsthand was shocking. Pisani and Corbett are members of the Caledon Community Road Safety Advocacy Group (CCRSAG). And when it comes to the trucking business in this neck of the woods, there is a lot to be concerned about. Indeed, the list of grievances includes: • Unsafe trucks and poorly trained truckers • A growing underground economy that is breeding lawlessness on the roads which includes drug running and human trafficking • Trucks that are illegally stored and not maintained properly • Immigration fraud involving temporary foreign workers • Rules being violated at every level – be it the rules of the road to the rules regarding environmental stewardship (i.e., the illegal dumping of used motor oil and transmission fluid into waterways) The descent into trucking lawlessness in such cities as Caledon, Vaughan and Brampton began about a decade ago. It’s just getting worse with the passage of time. So, what’s at the root of these problems? And more importantly, what are the authorities doing about this? Well, apparently nothing. And the stakes are high. Indeed, the reason why the Caledon Community Road Safety Advocacy Group came into existence was due to the tragic case of Adrianna Milena McCauley. This 23-year-old woman died in a four-vehicle collision on Sept. 10, 2024, on Coleraine Dr. at King St. W. Rajwinder Singh, a Punjabi asylum seeker, was behind the wheel of a transport truck that soared through a red light that had been illuminated for a full 10 seconds. Earlier this year, Singh was shockingly handed a mere 55-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine. He’s already been released; he allegedly suffers from psychological damage, you see. (When oh when is this nation going to make deportation great again?) Rebel News also reached out to the Ontario Trucking Association. The OTA is well-aware of this festering problem. Recently, the OTA’s Marco Beghetto, VP, communications and New Media, wrote a scathing editorial regarding this disturbing and unsafe situation. Notes Beghetto: “The Ontario Trucking Association has been following the chaotic situation in Caledon – specifically along the border with Vaughan – for many years. I want to be clear: the industry stands with the community in demanding that commercial activity remain within the bounds of provincial and municipal law and, more importantly, the growing number of unscrupulous carriers who put untrained, unprepared, and careless drivers on the road with our residents, must be stopped. “We must distinguish between professional carriers and rogue operators. A truck in your community making a delivery is a sign of a healthy economy. But a fleet using a ‘ghost yard’ – a site illegally carved out of vacant agricultural land or literally in the backyards of residential subdivisions – is a violation of the law. “The OTA has been working closely with some local mayors to address these issues. Yet, the problem is expanding because rogue operators are bypassing the rules that law-abiding trucking companies follow. Meanwhile, politicians and enforcement agencies at every level point fingers and debate responsibilities over jurisdiction and enforcement authority. Meanwhile, as time passes without any progress, the problem worsens.” So, what’s really going on here when it comes to enforcing the rules? Indeed, how is it that the federal Liberals invoked the Emergencies Act in 2022 to violently takedown a peaceful protest in Ottawa yet ignore the Wild West of trucking elsewhere? After all, the Freedom Convoy demonstration was comprised mostly of law-abiding truckers who weren’t causing any harm to anyone. Yet the feds now turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to illegal trucking that is leading to unsafe situations. And it’s the same deal with the province of Ontario and the various municipalities – they don’t seem to care, either. In the final analysis, is this irresponsible approach all about identity politics? After all, the vast majority of those involved in the illegal trucking racket are Indian. So, is this really all about the powers-that-be not wanting to be painted as culturally insensitive? Is this also all about not wanting to upset a growing voting bloc? Ontario’s Rice Lake is identifying as a… person?! A tranquil body of water in southeastern Ontario is at the centre of a sweeping legal experiment that could transform how residents, businesses and governments interact with the natural environment. Rice Lake, just north of Lake Ontario and adjacent to Alderville First Nation, is having the stage set to be granted full legal personhood — complete with inherent rights, designated ‘guardians’, and the theoretical ability to initiate (and be subject to) legal action. The proposal is being advanced by Alderville First Nation Chief Taynar Simpson, who unveiled the resolution during last month’s hypocritical United Nations climate summit in Belém, Brazil, where he attended as part of Canada’s official delegation. The concept was promoted internationally as an ecological safeguard, but at home it’s raising questions about land use, oversight and who ultimately gains decision-making power within the water and along the shoreline. Personhood in the legal context is still a very novel idea, with the Rice Lake initiative marking only the second such designation for a waterway in Canada, following Quebec’s Magpie River in 2021, which was done as a direct result of planned industrial damming. Simpson has described the Alderville resolution as an effort to protect the lake’s rights forever, but the idea actually came from Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky, as described by Simpson during a local radio show interview last summer. Simpson states that natural entities require advocates to speak on their behalf, and a newly formed ‘Guardian Council’ is expected to fill that role – ultimately holding the authority to make decisions and challenge any perceived harm done to the lake. The Town of Port Hope has eagerly supported the idea, despite being situated on Lake Ontario, not Rice Lake. Port Hope council went so far as to pass a motion last September endorsing the initiative. It’s not their turf, but they even went on to host a benefit concert that raised more than $20,000 for the cause. Yet none appear overly concerned or critical that the arrangement may set the stage for a governance structure operating outside of elected bodies and traditional land-use mechanisms. Indeed, personhood introduces major legal uncertainties from restrictions on fishing, boating, shoreline development and recreational use. The ambiguity alone could depress property values or stall investment. The lack of dedicated enforcement also raises more questions than answers, especially after Simpson acknowledged on the same radio program last month that the Alderville band doesn’t have its own enforcement arm and instead relies on the Ontario Provincial Police for policing, which he said is not always responsive. These anxieties come amid a national backdrop of escalating land-rights rulings and title disputes. Recent decisions in British Columbia — including recognition of Aboriginal title on Lulu Island — and the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling affirming Saugeen First Nation’s historic claim to part of Sauble Beach, have intensified public pressure over long-standing boundaries and private property rights. And personhood initiatives could compound these pressures by creating parallel legal pathways for environmental claims tied to historic or unresolved jurisdictional issues. Planet had previously instituted a 96-hour hold on all imagery of American installations in the region, for the Operational Security (OPSEC) reasons of preventing Iranians from using up-to-date satellite imagery in their targeting efforts. As of this morning, Planet has extended this delay to two weeks, with all imagery of non-Iranian terrain being withheld for 14 days from all customers. Strait of Hormuz: The Strait remains semi-officially closed, as most commercial vessels refuse to accept the risk of trying to run the gauntlet. Iranian forces continue to strike cargo vessels, but some vessels are making the attempt to transit the Strait, amid these threats. This morning, one commercial vessel was reportedly struck by a drone (or had a near-miss), highlighting the risks for commercial shipping. Analyst Comment: Interestingly enough, some vessels have pulled a Leeroy Jenkins, and plowed through the Strait over the past few days with their transponders off, hoping for the best. Other vessels have also tried the old standby trick that was discovered during the Houthi targeting in the Red Sea last year...they're changing their AIS transponder data to claim affiliation with China, in hopes of being allowed free passage. This has worked for a couple of dozen vessels so far, but the targeting of shipping in the Persian Gulf is still too random to draw a conclusion as to what's actually being targeted by the Iranians. Korean Peninsula: South Korean officials have voiced concern regarding the reallocation of American strategic resources from the region. This morning, the South Korean media group Yonhap published photos of Americans disassembling a THAAD battery, which is being relocated to the Middle East to replace at least one of the sites that was damaged/destroyed by Iranian targeting efforts. Canada: This morning an active shooter was reported at the U.S. Consulate General in Toronto. Toronto Police state that a white Honda CRV approached the facility, stopping at the main entrance. Two suspects exited the vehicle and fired shots from handguns at the Consulate, before egressing from the scene. Multiple shell casings were recovered from the shooting site, and the shooters remain at large. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: National security is of course a higher priority than providing up-to-date satellite imagery of the Middle East for the civilian world; as unfortunate as it is, censorship is a critical part of warfare and there's absolutely nothing that can be done about it. However, the timing and nature of this censorship occurring now, is quite interesting. As a reminder, the Chinese have provided extremely detailed imagery of American equipment losses since the start of the war via their own satellite networks, so the Iranians don't exactly need American satellites at all. This seemingly unimportant satellite imagery delay can also serve as an indicator for the expected timeline of the war...requesting American satellite companies to intentionally withhold their imagery from the public for two full weeks is not something that is done if the war is coming to a close. Right now, a lot of rhetoric is flying concerning the potential end of the conflict, with analysis of President Trump's remarks on the war focusing on how long the war might last, or what might happen over the next few days/weeks. At the moment, we cannot make decisions based on this rhetoric, as it changes by the hour and is frequently contradictory. What we can do, is look at the facts. American companies are being ordered to withhold satellite imagery from the region for two weeks. American positions continue being targeted by Iranian drones, to include another strike at the THAAD battery in Abu Dhabi this morning, and a strike at Al Udeid Airbase last night. The United States continues to level and crater most military installations throughout Iran with overwhelming dominance, to include bombing sites which have already been bombed. Dubai and the GCC states at large continue to be targeted daily by Iranian drones, and flights are routinely grounded due these targeting efforts. All of these data points indicate that this conflict may last for some time. All it takes is a phone call to stop the bombing and bring everybody home, and considering President Trump's style of rapidly changing policies, this could very well happen. If this is true (which we may never know), this would be the first instance of an American drone boat being used for rescue operations in a combat zone. Northern Ireland: Yesterday evening an extremely graphic beheading attempt was reported on a residential street in Belfast. One Sudanese national attacked a local, gouging out his eyes with a knife and attempting to behead him. The exceptionally brutal attack was captured on tape, and the video circulated widely in the moments after the attack. The status of the victim remains unclear, but he is receiving medical care for his many wounds. The victim has not been identified by name, however he's reportedly from Scotland and also hard-of-hearing, leaving him more vulnerable to the attack. Analyst Comment: The attacker was initially hospitalized at The Mater, the main hospital in Belfast. It is unclear as to if the attacker is still physically located at this site, but he was spotted in the hospital by local intelligence networks as he was being given a medical exam post-incident. The suspect is most likely being held at the Musgrave Custody Suite on Victoria Street, which is one of the more protected sites in Belfast and can hold high-security detainees. Despite the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) not charging this individual under terrorism charges, there's a very high likelihood that the attacker would not survive the first night once other detainees found out what he did. The assailant was granted asylum status as a refugee a few years ago, though the exact nature of this legal status is not entirely clear. -HomeFront- Texas: This afternoon Karmello Anthony was found guilty of the murder Austin Metcalf. So far limited protest activity has been observed outside the courthouse. Concerning the site of the mutilation, the location of the attempted beheading has been host to violence before. This exact apartment building has been the site of violent murders in the past. In 2019, two bodies were found brutally murdered inside Kinnaird Close, with the trial for the murderer concluding a couple of years ago. Of note, the attack yesterday evening was halted by Irishmen who intervened to attempt to stop the murder. Matthew McKiernan (Gaelic spelling: Maitiu Mág Tighearnán) has been identified as the man who clubbed the African with a hurley stick, attempting to stop the attack. He and other pedestrians did what they could, but by the time they were able to intervene, exceptionally grave wounds had already been sustained by the victim. They did their best, but there was only so much they could do as taking care of the problem was not a viable option as police were seconds away from the scene and would have absolutely arrested citizens for continuing the counterattack on the African after they arrived. Nevertheless, the entire city of Belfast is calling for blood right now, and tonight they might just get it. For historical context, this brutal attack took place in one of the most contentious districts on Earth. Belfast was one of the epicenters of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and the northwest quadrant of the city is still host to many "peace lines" to this very day. Granted, most of the old maps designating the Catholic/Nationalist/Republican (CNR) areas from the Protestant/Ulster/Loyalist (PUL) areas of the city are a bit outdated and not as strictly delineated in real life as it is marked on the map sometimes. Plus, the old history of political ideology, infamous organizations, and current political leadership is incredibly complicated. In short, neither side can rightfully point the finger at the other on this issue, because elements on both sides have resulted in furthering mass migration into Ireland. On the ground, this attack took place in a strong CNR community, right along a historic dividing line, so multiple communities have a vested interest in handling the situation. Even before sunset this evening communities which have quite literally killed each other over dividing lines, are at least beginning to acknowledge the seriousness of the current migration situation, while also acknowledging that singing songs and holding hands is still unlikely between Protestants and Catholics in many of these communities. Though the situation is incredibly complicated, when it comes to beheadings in the streets, the seriousness of the situation is stratifying along bigger lines than the history of the region. At his core, an Irishman is an Irishman, regardless of affiliation, and much like most of Western Civilization, the unofficial national sports are drinking, fighting, and blowing stuff up. As a result, there are solutions to these problems, if attention on all sides can be focused appropriately. There may indeed be more room for slight-cooperation between age-old factions which might have the chance to re-examine what lines of division are worth postponing for a time, as more pressing threats are already inside the fence....threats which are neither Catholic nor Protestant. Billion-Dollar Data Centers Are Taking Over the World | Lauren Goode, WIRED When Sam Altman said one year ago that OpenAI’s Roman Empire is the actual Roman Empire, he wasn’t kidding. In the same way that the Romans gradually amassed an empire of land spanning three continents and one-ninth of the Earth’s circumference, the CEO and his cohort are now dotting the planet with their own latifundia—not agricultural estates, but AI data centers. Tech executives like Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison are fully bought in to the idea that the future of the American (and possibly global) economy are these new warehouses stocked with IT infrastructure. But data centers, of course, aren’t actually new. In the earliest days of computing there were giant power-sucking mainframes in climate-controlled rooms, with co-ax cables moving information from the mainframe to a terminal computer. Then the consumer internet boom of the late 1990s spawned a new era of infrastructure. Massive buildings began popping up in the backyard of Washington, DC, with racks and racks of computers that stored and processed data for tech companies. A decade later, “the cloud” became the squishy infrastructure of the internet. Storage got cheaper. Some companies, like Amazon, capitalized on this. Giant data centers continued to proliferate, but instead of a tech company using some combination of on-premise servers and rented data center racks, they offloaded their computing needs to a bunch of virtualized environments. (“What is the cloud?” a perfectly intelligent family member asked me in the mid-2010s, “and why am I paying for 17 different subscriptions to it?”) All the while tech companies were hoovering up petabytes of data, data that people willingly shared online, in enterprise workspaces, and through mobile apps. Firms began finding new ways to mine and structure this “Big Data,” and promised that it would change lives. In many ways, it did. You had to know where this was going. Now the tech industry is in the fever-dream days of generative AI, which requires new levels of computing resources. Big Data is tired; big data centers are here, and wired—for AI. Faster, more efficient chips are needed to power AI data centers, and chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD have been jumping up and down on the proverbial couch, proclaiming their love for AI. The industry has entered an unprecedented era of capital investments in AI infrastructure, tilting the US into positive GDP territory. These are massive, swirling deals that might as well be cocktail party handshakes, greased with gigawatts and exuberance, while the rest of us try to track real contracts and dollars. OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle, and SoftBank have struck some of the biggest deals. This year an earlier supercomputing project between OpenAI and Microsoft, called Stargate, became the vehicle for a massive AI infrastructure project in the US. (President Donald Trump called it the largest AI infrastructure project in history, because of course he did, but that may not have been hyperbolic.) Altman, Ellison, and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son were all in on the deal, pledging $100 billion to start, with plans to invest up to $500 billion into Stargate in the coming years. Nvidia GPUs would be deployed. Later, in July, OpenAI and Oracle announced an additional Stargate partnership—SoftBank curiously absent—measured in gigawatts of capacity (4.5) and expected job creation (around 100,000). Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have also shared plans for multibillion-dollar data projects. Microsoft said at the start of 2025 that it was on track to invest “approximately $80 billion to build out AI-enabled data centers to train AI models and deploy AI and cloud-based applications around the world.” Then, in September, Nvidia said it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, provided that OpenAI made good on a deal to use up to 10 gigawatts of Nvidia’s systems for OpenAI’s infrastructure plans, which means essentially that OpenAI has to pay Nvidia in order to get paid by Nvidia. The following month AMD said it would give OpenAI as much as 10 percent of the chip company if OpenAI purchased and deployed up to 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs between now and 2030. It’s the circular nature of these investments that have the general public, and bearish analysts, wondering if we’re headed for an AI bubble burst. What’s clear is that the near-term downstream effects of these data center build-outs are real. The energy, resource, and labor demands of AI infrastructure are enormous. By some estimates, worldwide AI energy demand is set to surpass demand from bitcoin mining by the end of this year, WIRED has reported. The processors in data centers run hot and need to be cooled, so big tech companies are pulling from municipal water supplies to make that happen—and aren’t always disclosing how much water they’re using. Local wells are running dry or seem unsafe to drink from. Residents who live near data center construction sites are noting that traffic delays, and in some cases car crashes, are increasing. One corner of Richland Parish, Louisiana, home of Meta’s $27 billion Hyperion data center, has seen a 600 percent spike in vehicle crashes this year. Major proponents of AI seem to suggest that all of this will be worth it. Few top tech executives will publicly entertain the notion that this might be an overshoot, either ecologically or economically. “Emphatically … no,” Lisa Su, the chief executive of AMD, said earlier this month when asked if the AI froth has runneth over. Su, like other execs, cited overwhelming demand for AI as justification for these enormous capital expenditures. Demand from whom? Harder to pin down. In their mind, it’s everyone. All of us. The 800 million people who use ChatGPT on a weekly basis. The evolution from those 1990s data centers to the 2000s era of cloud computing to new AI data centers wasn’t just one continuum. The world has concurrently moved from the tiny internet to the big internet to the AI internet, and realistically speaking, there’s no going back. Generative AI is out of the bottle. The Sams and Jensens and Larrys and Lisas of the world aren’t wrong about this. It doesn’t mean they aren’t wrong about the math, though. About their economic predictions. Or their ideas about AI-powered productivity and the labor market. Or the availability of natural and material resources for these data centers. Or who will come once they build them. Or the timing of it all. Even Rome eventually collapsed.

Concerning this morning's vehicle explosion in Armenia, it's likely that security measures will be enhanced for a while, so getting out sooner rather than later would be ideal, for anyone still stuck in Iran. -HomeFront- Florida: As nationwide walkout protests involving students continue, children continue to be hit by vehicles as they conduct anti-ICE protests on busy roadways. This morning a student from Palm Beach Lakes Community High School in West Palm Beach was critically injured after stepping into the street during a protest. The condition of the student is not known at this time. Idaho: Early this morning just after midnight, a vehicle ramming attack was reported at a medical facility in Meridian. Local authorities state that one assailant stole an ambulance from the bay at St. Luke's Meridian Medical Center, which he then used to ram into the Portico West administration building on the corner of Eagle and Franklin. After ramming through the plate-glass entryway, the suspect then abandoned the ambulance, and retrieved multiple cans of gasoline that he had cached in the nearby vegetation before the attack. After obtaining the gas cans, the suspect doused the building with the gasoline, but due to the rapid arrival of authorities, egressed from the scene before he was able to ignite the accelerant. The suspect remains at large, and locals are advised to contact authorities with any information that might assist in the investigation. However, no physical description, clothing, or surveillance footage of the suspect has been provided at this time. Analyst Comment: Considering the multiple weapons used during the attack (the gasoline and the vehicle itself) this meets current criteria for being described as a Complex Coordinated Attack (CCA). As such, this incident is being treated as a deliberate terror attack while the investigation is ongoing. North Carolina: Yesterday evening a possible explosive attack was conducted outside a polling place in Moore County. Aberdeen police state that a loud bang was heard yesterday evening outside the Parks and Rec building on Sandhills Blvd. that was serving as an early voting site. Poll workers subsequently investigated the cause of the sound, which resulted in the discovery of a spent flashbang device (though whether or not the device was improvised or commercially produced was not disclosed). Police state that they think someone threw the device at the venue from a moving vehicle passing by on the highway outside the structure. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: As most headlines remain focused on the Middle East, terrorism concerns remain paramount here at home. Attacks or incidents involving polling places are always noteworthy due to the political goals that are often the motivation for such activities. However, the North Carolina case is extra noteworthy due to the location of Aberdeen and Southern Pines in general being saturated with important people affiliated with the Special Warfare community. Whether it is mysterious Chechens sneaking through the woods, or electrical substations being shot at in areas that are not easy to find...whenever current events start getting serious around the world, things in Moore County start getting weird. Regarding this case, commercial flashbang devices are not easy to obtain by the average civilian, and they're also not particularly easy to make either. If this had happened anywhere else (and at any other time) most would probably chalk this up to kids playing pranks, but at the present time of palpably-high tensions globally, there's probably more to the case than meets the eye. Similar story in Idaho, where very important context has been left out of much of the reporting surrounding the hospital attack. The exact building that was attacked this morning was rumored to contain workspaces that were leased to ICE. These rumors originated from a WIRED article that was published last week, which identified a list of locations that were being used by Homeland Security, and subsequently, ICE. This report circulated among far-left terror cells in Boise last week, which is very likely why local authorities are tight-lipped regarding the suspect...they don't want to admit that far-left groups are continuing to conduct terrorist attacks at an increasing rate around the United States, without any accountability whatsoever. More specific to this area, Boise PD does not have the resources to combat what has become a very serious domestic terrorism problem in their city over the past few months, and stirring up more activists-turned-terrorists is probably more than they want to handle at the moment. Are the Dirt Heaps at the Northland Mall Poisoned? The Detroit Inspector General said toxic dirt came from Southfield, but local politicians haven't admitted there's a problem yet By Charlie LeDuff Charlie LeDuff Southfield — I filed a complaint with the Southfield Police Department this week, requesting an investigation into potential crimes against humanity. Are the citizens of Southfield—like the people of neighboring Detroit—the unwitting victims of a mass poisoning? If there is a benign explanation, we’d love to hear it. But officials from the city of Southfield, the county of Oakland, the state of Michigan, and U.S. federal authorities have not provided one. Thus, we found ourselves at the Southfield PD. It is no secret that there is a sprawling criminal investigation into the origins of dirt used to fill holes in Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s decade-long demolition blitz. The Detroit Office of the Inspector General alleges that at least one unscrupulous contractor, Brian McKinney (a man with close ties to Duggan and Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield), diverted contaminated soil into Detroit and used it to fill holes where houses once stood. The IG has had some holes excavated. Tests reveal soil so toxic that it is unsafe for human contact. So where did the sickening soil come from? The IG alleges that at least some of it came from the old Northland Mall site just across 8 Mile Road, in Southfield, a city that bills itself as “The Center of It All.” The question here is obvious: If the people of Detroit have been poisoned, then what about the people of Southfield? Their city leaders, fancying themselves high-end developers, purchased the 100 acres of buildings and parking lots that comprised the iconic, and abandoned, Northland Mall. While demolition was ongoing, Mayor Ken Siver encouraged contractors from around the region to bring him dirt. Mountains of it. “Stockpiling clean dirt for free and storing it on site because we have the space,” Siver told Fox 2 back in 2017. Free, clean dirt? Really? Remember, this was the same time Detroit was caught up in a federal grand jury investigation, suspected of using contaminated highway slag because no clean, affordable dirt could be found. The soil from Southfield that was dumped into Detroit has tested positive for excessive levels of mercury, lead, chromium, and PAH—contamination consistent with roadways and industrial slag. Southfield found itself buried in heavy losses in 2021 and sold the site to a private developer with the promise of up to $200 million in public incentives if he built “a city within a city.” Five years later, there are some half-built condos missing windows and wiring and walls. The developer began excavating the mountain of contaminated dirt to the area's landfills. Eventually, the IG claims, the poisoned dirt made its way to Detroit. But not all of it. Huge mounds of the stuff can be seen today all the way from 9 Mile Road. The tops of the slag heaps have been flattened over the years by whipping winds, giving them the look of the grand mesas of the Colorado Plateau. Seagulls wade in lagoons of brackish water that flow into the sewers and streets. The vista gives one the sickening feeling of staring into a Super Fund site. And Enjoyer has learned that the development company was fined last year for performing work without first removing asbestos. “You know, it’s been here so long, I just sort of got used to it,” said a man working on his building directly across Greenfield Road. “Nobody’s told us a thing about it. We deserve that much. We all got children.” The city that calls itself “The Center of It All” has indeed become the center of it all… all the wrong things. The center of a potential mass poisoning. The center of wasted tax dollars. The center of incompetent political leadership that prefers to bury its head than dig itself out of the problem. The center of a growing environmental scandal. How bad is it? Who knows? The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.
