𝐀𝐧 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦; 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬. When the KWS Rift Valley Mobile Veterinary Unit arrived, they found the exhausted animal trapped in a dangerous situation. A winch-wire snare had become tightly wound around its head and neck, leaving painful wounds and restricting... its movement. Stranded in the water and unable to free itself, the waterbuck's survival depended on urgent intervention. Reaching the animal was no simple task. Members of the veterinary team had to swim out to the struggling waterbuck, carefully approaching and restraining it before removing the snare and treating its injuries. The rescue highlights the dedication of wildlife veterinarians and rangers, whose work often takes them into challenging environments where quick thinking, skill, and teamwork are essential to saving lives. Following treatment, the waterbuck was translocated to Crater Lake Conservancy, where it can recover in a safer environment. While this waterbuck was fortunate, many animals caught in snares are not. Often associated with illegal bushmeat hunting and other forms of wildlife crime, snares are indiscriminate traps that injure and kill wildlife. Their impact extends far beyond a single animal, affecting wildlife populations and undermining conservation efforts. A swift and highly skilled wildlife rescue in Manapparai Forest Range, Trichy, saw an Indian gaur safely brought out of an open agricultural well after nearly eight hours of coordinated effort by the Forest Department and Fire & Rescue Services. With conventional rescue methods ruled out, the team relied on precise veterinary intervention and a crane operation to bring the animal to safety, after which it was treated for minor injuries and released back into the Reserve Forest. This young lion was on the edge of survival. A sub-adult male African lion in Ol Choro Conservancy was monitored with a serious, infected wound on his left front leg, thought to be sustained during an encounter with a warthog. After the sighting, he disappeared into the bush for several days, raising urgent concern for his condition. When wildlife injuries occur naturally, there is often careful consideration around whether intervention is the right choice. In many cases, wildlife is left to recover on its own as part of the natural process. However, given this lion’s young age, the severity of the infection, and the vulnerability of Kenya’s lion populations, the decision was made to provide life-saving treatment and give him the best chance of survival. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Ol Choro Conservancy rangers partnered with Mara Elephant Project to undertake an operation that provided life-saving treatment to the lion. Once located, the lion was placed under anesthesia by Kenya Wildlife Service veterinarian Dr. Ashif Hafiz so he could receive urgent care, including antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication, for the infected wound that had left him lame and in poor condition. After the treatment, the Ol Choro and MEP ranger teams monitored him to ensure he regained normal posture and mobility. Thanks to strong coordinated efforts on the ground, this young lion now has a second chance at survival.

Through our Community & Wildlife Service Division, we learned of this extraordinary act of kindness. However, while her intentions were noble, keeping wildlife - even out of love - is against the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (WCMA), which protects wild animals and ensures their wellbeing in their natural habitats. The cheetah was safely taken in by KWS officers and handed over to our veterinary team, who conducted a full health check to ensure it was in good condition, collected samples for laboratory testing, and administered treatment for parasite control. Now under expert care at the Nairobi Safari Walk, the cheetah continues to thrive as part of our conservation and education efforts. An 800-kg wild gaur walked more than 300 km across Tamil Nadu, from the forests of Trichy to the shores of Pamban. What followed was one of the most complex wildlife operations undertaken in the state. After a month of tracking the animal through human-dominated landscapes, and when all efforts to guide it back to suitable habitat failed, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department carried out the state’s first long-distance gaur translocation. Nearly 100 personnel, including expert veterinarians and trackers, worked in challenging coastal terrain to safely tranquilize, transport and release the animal in a Reserve Forest in Dindigul after a 13-hour capture operation and a 9-hour journey. Translocating a gaur is among the most challenging wildlife management tasks. This successful operation marks a significant milestone in conflict mitigation and wildlife management, while providing valuable lessons for future human-wildlife conflict situations. Our Elephants are checking out the Mobile Wildlife Forensic cum Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at a Tamil Nadu Forest Department elephant camp. An initiative of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department, this first-of-its-kind facility is providing advanced veterinary care directly into the field. Equipped with a haematology analyser, serum biochemistry analyser, microscope, centrifuge, refrigerators and a -20°C deep freezer, it enables rapid on-site diagnosis, disease surveillance, forensic investigations and instant diagnostic reports. By bringing sophisticated diagnostics to the doorstep of elephants and other wildlife, it enables faster treatment, reduces the stress of transportation and improves the chances of survival. Celebrating the canine conservation heroes helping make Tsavo safer for all creatures. 🐾 Bela and her fellow SWT/KWS Canine Unit recruits are trained to sniff out wildlife crime and track down perpetrators. But when the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit, operated in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, needed help treating an injured elephant, they were ready to assist. As soon as the elephant was spotted, the Dhenkanal Forest Division’s Rapid Response Team rushed in. Forest staff, Fire Division personnel and local villagers joined hands to bring him out safely. Veterinary personnel immediately provided primary treatment before the young elephant was shifted to the Elephant Rescue Centre for further care and observation. One frightened animal. 🐘❤️ This rescue gave this elephant a second chance. Rescuers found the elephant with its trunk tightly wrapped in vines and wire. The injury was severe, and the poor animal was clearly in pain. The team carefully removed everything that was cutting into the trunk and treated the wound with medicine. At first, the damage looked so serious that it seemed like the elephant might lose part of its trunk. Thankfully, their quick work helped save it. An elephant depends on its trunk for almost everything, from eating and drinking to breathing and protecting itself. Saving it meant giving this gentle giant a real chance to recover. The dedication and care shown by the rescue team is truly inspiring. Moments like this remind us how much compassion can change a life. ❤️

🐘❤️ This rescue gave this elephant a second chance. Rescuers found the elephant with its trunk tightly wrapped in vines and wire. The injury was severe, and the poor animal was clearly in pain. The team carefully removed everything that was cutting into the trunk and treated the wound with medicine. At first, the damage looked so serious that it seemed like the elephant might lose part of its trunk. Thankfully, their quick work helped save it. An elephant depends on its trunk for almost everything, from eating and drinking to breathing and protecting itself. Saving it meant giving this gentle giant a real chance to recover. The dedication and care shown by the rescue team is truly inspiring. Moments like this remind us how much compassion can change a life. ❤️

Two wildlife officers discovered a large Moose trapped in a net. It was panicked, struggling violently, and fell to the ground, crying out in fear and pain. The officers carefully approached it (as the large elk could have been dangerous) and quickly cut through the net to free it. After being released, instead of attacking, the Moose got back on its feet and immediately ran into the forest—perhaps understanding that they had saved its life. 🫎🌲

Our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units exist to alleviate animal suffering. This successful operation to save a snared elephant's trunk earlier this year is a powerful reminder of the difference they make. The bull had lived with a snare slicing around his trunk for months. Left untended, it likely would have severed his trunk. His plight was spotted when our SWT helicopter was called to shepherd him off community land, into the safety of Tsavo East National Park. In the process, our pilot noticed a poacher’s snare, cinched tight around his trunk. The SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit rushed to the scene and, with support from our Aerial Unit, darted the patient. From there, treatment was swift and straightforward. The snare had been in place for at least three months, and in that time, the wound had completely healed over. Fortunately, a single snip of the snare was all it took to save the trunk. Despite the lasting damage, the bull's trunk will grow normally and he will be able to lead a full and healthy life. As snare victim Enkesha has demonstrated, even with holes or scar tissue, elephants can adapt to use their trunks to eat and drink without issue. To date, more than 3,800 elephants – including this bull – have been offered life-saving treatment by our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units. It likely slipped on the wet ground, and one of its horns became buried deep in the mud, leaving it unable to stand up. ✨ Fortunately, it was rescued just in time before a group of hyenas waiting on the other side had a chance to attack. Moments like this remind us that wildlife sometimes depends on human care and intervention. 💖
