A true behemoth with four engines and a revolutionary widebody design, the “Jumbo Jet” redefined long-haul travel. Test pilots Jack Waddell and Brien Wygle, with Jess Wallick serving as flight engineer. Just under three years after the program’s launch in April 1966, the Queen of the Skies lifted off. Only 3 years and 9 months later, she entered commercial service. No CAD. No CAM. No supercomputers. Just slide rules, drafting tables, wooden mockups — and an extraordinary team of engineers led by Joe Sutter, the “Father of the 747.” His leadership and vision turned an ambitious gamble into the most iconic airliner in history.
