He had a lot of opportunities defensively in game, and handled them all with ease. Showed the ability to come in well. Had a big swing in a big moment to give his team the lead for the moment. FORMER KNOTT COUNTY CENTRAL AND ALICE LLOYD STAR PROVING TO BE A BIG SUCCESS IN BASEBALL Baseball has taken Dalton Cornett many places. The former Knott County Central star and Alice Lloyd College All-American has found a way to make a career out of the sport in a unique way - by playing Banana Ball! Cornett, the son of Alice Lloyd head coach Scott Cornett, was an All-American and NCCAA Mideast Region Player of the Year for the Eagles. He then transitioned to playing baseball professionally. He played for the Lexington Legends of the Atlantic League and the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League. He also spent some time in Puerto Rico before signing with the Savanah Bananas organization. He spent his first three years playing with the Party Animals, one of the teams created to play against the Bananas. This season, he is playing with one of the organization’s other teams - The Firefighters. Cornett is still enjoying the game he loves and recently hit a homer against the Bananas in a game. Cornett also owns DC3, a baseball equipment and clothing company. His company has designed uniforms, and his gloves have even been used in Major League Baseball games. One of his gloves is a tribute to Kentucky. He’s showing how one can be a success in a sport that they love without going the traditional route while using savvy to run a baseball business. We’re proud of what Dalton Cornett is doing, and he serves as a role model for young athletes in the mountains with his hustle both on and off the field.

**HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT** When I started the Hockey Think Tank, the first thing I wanted to do was educate myself on the youth hockey experience. What is the state of youth hockey? What are some things that people love about the journey? What are some things that need to change? I am so grateful to the thousands of passionate hockey people that have given me a new found perspective on the game. One theme that continuously came up in conversation was parent stress. Youth hockey, and youth sports in general, is changing so fast that it’s really hard for parents to understand how to support their players. Whether their kid has a dream of playing in the NHL, PWHL, or even if they just enjoy playing lower-level hockey, parents are constantly looking for resources and perspective to help guide their player on their journey. There wasn’t really much hockey parent education out there for them…until now. After months of preparation and work, we are finally so excited to release our Hockey Think Tank Parent Resource Courses! Our goal through these courses is to provide honest, neutral-party insight and perspective to help you as a parent understand youth hockey better and enjoy the experience with your player. We have multiple courses available, having something for everyone. 1. The Hockey Parent Survive and Thrive Guide This course is for all hockey parents to better grasp and appreciate the youth hockey journey. Some of the topics include handling parent FOMO (Fear of missing out), how to build a strong parent culture on your team, the importance of the car ride home, helping your player build resilience, and more. 2. Recruiting 101 – Male Players & Female Players For parents looking for more and have players that aspire to play high level hockey, we give honest insight into what that process looks like. Topics include college recruiting timelines, a window behind the scenes of a scout’s process including what they look for on and off the ice, advisors (!), and what you can do to reach out to coaches of teams you want to play for. You get 1 spring Little League season per year. You can play tournaments every weekend. Missing your rec league games to play in a travel ball tournament is not legit. It's also not safe from an arm care perspective. The travel ball player is probably a top Little League player, so it really hurts the team. Dont put your child that situation. And dont do that to the team. It puts the Little League head coach in an awful position. What are they supposed to tell the team? "Oh yea, little Bobby is playing on his travel team this weekend instead of with us..." And then that travel ball player is expected to just be slotted back into the lineup? That's not right. I bet if the LL coach sits the player for skipping out on the team, those parents complain. In fact, I literally just had this happen with a good friend... which prompted this reflection. Play Little League or Travel Ball. And if you do both, prioritize the rec league with the team who has worked together for months with the goal of playing meaningful baseball at the end of the season. Show up for the volunteer coach who probably selected you as one of their top picks to carry and lead the team. In Division III, Region 10 action, #3 Padua Bruins Baseball punched its ticket to the Regional Final with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sylvania Southview Baseball, despite being outhit 7-4. Talented 2028 two-way prospect Chase Martin set the tone on the mound, earning the win after five strong innings. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while piling up 11 strikeouts. 2027 RHP Brandon Tillman took over for the final two innings and secured the save, striking out two while helping the Bruins hold off a late Southview push. Soccer is booming in the United States and World Cup viewership shows there is MASSIVE interest, but it will never be the priority and always play 5th fiddle to the Big 4 sports in America unless Americans fundamentally change their approach to youth sports. American Soccer is behind the rest of the world for 3 reasons: 1. Cultural Sporting DNA In the USA, Soccer competes in a crowded field of Football, Basketball, Baseball and Hockey instead of dominating like abroad. Europe and the rest of the world built soccer through community clubs, local pride and it being their default sport. They are born with a soccer ball on their feet. 2. Pay-to-Play Barrier In the USA most youth are priced out of playing because the cost to be on the team is too expensive. Currently there is a 14% decline in youth soccer participation between ages 6 to 12. Europe and the rest of world’s accessible club model keeps more kids in the game longer. 3. Less participation in the sport An all time high 16.8 million youth played outdoor soccer in the USA in 2025, but per capita the USA is far behind other European countries like Belgium which has a 3x higher rate of participation for its population size. For American soccer to catch up, it has to change its sporting culture focus to development instead of making money and lower the cost barrier for participation through state and government funded clubs over the next 20 years. Development needs to be the priority, not maximizing how much money can be made off the athlete and their parents. Instead of focusing on the old statement of “if our best athletes played”, focus on making the best athletes want to keep playing and the ones who do play the beautiful game better at it. Then and only then can we find our Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal, Messi, Ronaldo or Jude Bellingham. Sometimes, a coach loses a game, much less a regional final, and they're ready to hit the showers, hit the road, and not talk much. It was refreshing to see Louisiana's Head Coach Matt Deggs, who'd just lost 19-5 to Mississippi State, after playing in mid 90s temps earlier in the afternoon just to get the opportunity, willing to talk about the game, his team, and even his expectations for next year. If you're fans of Mississippi State and its Head Coach Brian O' Connor, he will remind you of the same candor, plain-spoken-but-well-spoken type of coach who has both affection for his players but expectations of what he asks and demands of them. This is a coach whose team survived multiple elimination games at the Sun Belt tournament, played at all hours and even multiple locations last week, winding up in the championship game. And when offered a chance to deflect the lopsided score with the drain his team might have faced having only a short while after gutting out a win over 2-seed Cincinnati 8-6, he said his team wasn't tired, though. They just ran out of pitching. And, his analogy that "they were going to have to kill us, and they did" was a tip of the cap to his opponent, whom he deemed worthy of a long run in Omaha.
