![๐ฒ๐พ๐ง๐ท Anwar Ibrahim at the BRICS Business Forum 2025 in Rio In Rio, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim delivered a quiet thunderclap: BRICS 2025 is not merely a summitโitโs a historic turning point in the unfinished struggle for post-colonial justice. He invoked the legacy of Sukarno, Nehru, Zhou Enlai, and Nkrumahโfounders of a vision long obstructed by the chokehold of Western institutions. The Non-Aligned Movement and G77 laid the groundwork, but too often the Global South was spoken about, not with. Those days, he suggested, are numbered. What sets todayโs BRICS apart, Anwar argued, is not just political will, but the convergence of state leadership with the energy of the business community, youth, women, and civil society. This is no longer about theory or protestโitโs about implementation, trade, currency sovereignty, and technological parity. He saluted President Lula for defying the scripted roles assigned to Southern leaders and advancing a vision rooted in dignity and independence. That eraโof waiting for permission from Washington or Brusselsโis over. As Anwar put it, โWe cannot continue complaining but not executing.โ The message was unmistakable: the Global South is no longer a passive blocโit is a strategic South, ready to engage the world on its own terms, with its own voice, and on equal footing. Full Speech Transcript (Edited lightly for clarity and flow.) It is a historic moment. For those of you who have been following the course of history, we realize that the attempt to save the voice of newly emerging economies and countriesโpost-colonialismโwas led by Sukarno of Indonesia, Zhou Enlai of China, Jawaharlal Nehru of India, and Nkrumah of Africa. It was a bold attempt to ensure that the voice of conscienceโof those struggling for freedom and justiceโwould be heard. It did not achieve much success. But it was a bold attempt. Then we had the Non-Aligned Movement. Preceding that, we had the G77โstill not achieving the desired results. Now, I salute you, President Lula, for having the courage to proceed with a clear vision, a clear commitment, to voice the concerns and aspirations of the people, particularly of the Global South. [applause] But why are we particularly encouraged? Because it is no longer an effort purely of political leadership. Political leaders have a role to initiate this reform. But what is spectacular about BRICS is the participation of the business communityโthe private sectorโthat complements this effort, ensuring that the voice of reason, the voice for justice, is not only heard, but also implemented. Together with political leadership, the business community, women, youth, and the private sectorโwe salute you all for this effort. [applause] I see this conference in a more positive light. Weโre not here to complain or lament those who believe in unilateral actionsโtariffs, protectionism. Here, we raise a voice for multilateralism, for collaboration. We work with countries of the South, but still engage with countries in the North as friends in this new alliance. But we want to make sure we speak from a position of strengthโnot as weak, ex-colonial countries, but as independent nations with a clear position. And now you seeโfrom aerospace to AI, from food tech to green technologyโyou have this new strength emerging from emerging economies. And I believe this BRICS initiative will succeed in ways that could alter and redirect the course of human history. Thank you very much for this effort. [applause] I come from Malaysia. And in ASEAN, we deliberate these issues. First, we must be cohesive. We must speak as oneโbased on multilateral arrangementsโand we must promote the principle of centrality: befriending all, supporting just causes. But it's no longer enough to rely on rhetoric and political platitudes. What we need is concrete action. Thatโs why one of ASEANโs pillars is the business community. We must increase intra-ASEAN trade. And now, we must also increase intra-BRICS trade. We have enormous potential, and we must act on it. Because only with that strength can we negotiateโsafely, fairly, and justlyโwith all other partners, multilaterally. We must demand reform: a democratic, just, international, and multilateral orderโfrom the United Nations to the WTO, to the IMF and the World Bank. Again, I support the position taken by President Lulaโone of the few courageous leaders todayโvoicing the concerns of those who have long gone unheard. So thank you, my friend. [applause] In ASEAN, weโve not only worked on enhancing inter-ASEAN trade; weโve also experimented with financial settlement systems. Weโve started using local currencies. Of course, weโre not talking about full de-dollarization yetโthatโs still a long road. But weโve started: Malaysia with Indonesia, Malaysia with Thailand, and now also with China. Even beginning with 10 or 20% makes a difference. We cannot continue to complain without implementing our own plans among ourselves and our friendly neighbors. And I believe that what President Lula saidโand what the chairman of the confederation emphasizedโabout ensuring the private sector takes these items seriously will truly make a difference. But let me return to the central point: BRICS in 2025 is not the first attempt. The Bandung Conference in 1955โit began when we were still struggling. No industry. No new technology. No real capacityโexcept for our shared humanity, our national aspirations, and political leadership. Now, we have political leadership with vision, and we have a strong business community. I believe that this collaborationโbetween women and youth, between governments and the private sector, and with civil societyโwill make a difference. I thank you again, Mr. President. the United States has a strategic policy of using proxies to engage in war; when we fight these wars we have no limits on the cruelty and the inhumanity that weโre prepared to impose on the people; ๐ธ The war [in Syria] began in 2011 when the United States landed Central Intelligence operatives to begin coordinating with Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups; ๐ธ We have been unwavering supporters of Al-Qaeda since before the war formally began; ๐ธ We are supporters of Al-Qaeda today where theyโre bottled up in Idlib Province; ๐ธ The CIA supplied them under secret operation Timber Sycamore; ๐ธ We gave them all of their anti-tank weapons and all of their anti-air missiles; ๐ธ Al-Qaeda has always been our proxy force on the ground; they together with ISIS have carried out the mission of the United States together with a great number of affiliates that really are kind of interchangeableโyou have the Free Syrian Army; soldiers move from ISIS to Al-Qaeda to Free Syrian Army rather fluidly; ๐ธ The United States has a strategic policy of using proxies to engage in war; ๐ธ Our objective was to overthrow the legitimate government of Syria and, in order to do that, we employed proxy soldiers who were the the most vile of all terrorists; ๐ธ Something very similar is happening right now in Ukraine; ๐ธ Plan B was the American seizure of the northern portion of Syria; it is the bread basket for all of the Syrian people; we wanted to take the wheat away to cause famine among the Syrian people; by stealing the oil and the gas we would be able to shut down the transportation system, and, at the same time, during the Syrian winters we could freeze to death the Syrian civilian population which, in many cases, were living in rubble where these terrorist armies with mechanized divisions had attacked and just totally destroyed these cities and left people just living in little pockets of rubble; ๐ธ We wanted to starve and we wanted to freeze to death the people of Syria; ๐ธ The Caesar sanctions were the most brutal sanctions ever imposed on ever any nation; during the Second World War sanctions were not nearly as strict as they were on Syria; ๐ธ We devalued their currency through the SWIFT system for international payments making it impossible for them to purchase medications; ๐ธ We cut off the medical supplies so that the women in Syria would die of breast cancer because they could not get the medications; ๐ธ One of the last things that we did, and the evidence is vague on it, but there was a mysterious explosion in the harbor [of Beirut] in Lebanon; it was a massive explosion of a shipload of ammonium nitrate fertilizer; it killed hundreds of Lebanese people; it wounded thousands and thousands, destroyed the economy of Lebanon, and, most importantly, it destroyed the banking system of Lebanon which was one of the few lifelines remaining to Syria; I donโt think that explosion was accidental; I think it was orchestrated and I suspect that the Central Intelligence Agency was aware of the nation that carried out that action to destroy Beirut Harbor; ๐ธ Throughout you see this Machiavellian approach where we use unlimited force and violence and, at the same time, we control the the global media to where we erase all discussions of whatโs truly happening; so to the man and woman in the street, they think things are fine, that everything is being done for altruistic reasons, but itโs not; ๐ธ One of the things that we did as we as we allied ourselves with Al-Qaeda and on-and-off with ISIS; we fought ISIS in a very serious way but at the same time we often employed them to use against the Syrian government; so itโs kind of a love-hate [relationship]; but we have always worked with the terrorists, they were the core; ๐ธ We facilitated the movement of Islamic terrorists from one hundred countries and they came and they joined ISIS, they joined Al-Qaeda, they joined the Free Syrian Army, all of these different ones; ๐ธ There was an organized campaign of rape across the nation of Syria; the highest prices went to the youngest children because there were a great number of pedophiles and the pedophiles wanted to possess small children; they were permitted to rape these children repeatedly; they were able to rape the widows of the slain civilians and possess them and buy them and sell them among themselves; ๐ธ There were so many tens hundreds of thousands of Syrian women impregnated by these terrorists who were imported into Syria that it was necessary to change the law so that they would have Syrian citizenship and they wouldnโt have to be returned to their ISIS father in Saudi Arabia or in Tunisia; ![[WATCH] Let us begin with gratitude. They called for a shutdown. South Africa did not shut down. Our children went to school. Our workers went to work. Our buses, our taxis and our trains ran. Our clinics and our shops stayed open. The economy kept its feet, and we foresee no grave job losses from the action. For this we thank the overwhelming majority of South Africans, who refused to be conscripted into anarchy and we thank the men and women of the South African Police Service, the Border Management Authority and our security services, who stood their ground with professionalism and restraint. Where there was violence, intimidation and looting, the law took its course, and it will continue to do so. We have said it before and we say it again: the enforcement of immigration law is the work of the democratic State, and of the State alone. No mob, no march and no self-appointed commander may take that power into their own hands. The ANC salutes the calm and the courage of ordinary South Africans, of every origin, who chose peace over the petrol bomb. But enforcement alone will never resolve what is, in truth, a continental question. No single country, acting on its own, can answer a movement of people that the whole of Africa is living through. Our continent carries the largest stock of intra-African migration in the world relative to its population approximately 40.5 million African migrants, some 21 million of whom remain on the continent, and around 35 million displaced persons of concern. The forces beneath these numbers are known to us all: the economic asymmetry between our economies; conflict, from the war in Sudan to the standing crises of the Sahel, the Horn and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo; the shocks of a changing climate, of which Cyclones Idai and Freddy were the cruellest reminders; and a youth population that will soon be the single largest contributor to the world's working-age growth. South Africa itself, on the 2022 Census, is home to some 3.95 million foreign-born residents 6.5 per cent of our people with all the pressure that places upon our clinics, our schools and our services.
