Álvaro Arbeloa, new head coach of Fulham in the English Premier League, coaching his players… What is coaching for? Engagement - helping players engage Development - helping players learn & grow Competing - helping players perform under pressure “𝟏𝟎𝟎% - 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 - 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬, 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬” A message of engagement. A call for attention because the currency of coaching is attention. Capture, captivate, and cultivate their attention… “𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞; 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 - 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲” Directing attention onto an external cue (the movement of a teammate) followed by a tactical cue (turn and look)…backed with a moment of retrieval (“like you did the other day”)…confidence…you’ve done this before… “𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞…𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲” The declaration of hard is useful…I’d love to hear reinforcement of a mental technique here…”This is where you need to use self-talk to keep your energy and effort up” - mental techniques influence physical effort… “𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐦” Insistence is so often the most powerful tool in a coaches armoury. But can coaches insist that teammates insist. Relational development is so often the strongest mediator of success in coach-team relationships. “𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐦…𝐢𝐟 𝐡𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞…𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞” You want a player to remember your instructions…then engage them in retrieval practice. Ask them questions about what you’ve just instructed them (if there’s time). Retrieve…Rehearse…Remember “𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞, 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞…𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛….𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥” An important instruction…again, have them repeat this back and even get them to physically show you this. Get them to verbally repeat but also physically rehearse (no matter how artificial it feels). Embodying instructions is essential (if there’s time) “𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐲𝐬…𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞” Get them in a huddle…get them discussing what was good. Point out to them what was good. Give them evidence to go home with…and get them to give themselves evidence. Reinforce these tomorrow as expectations. Note: none of the above is a judgement of Arbeloa…I’m using these tiny vignettes as an opportunity to reinforce some coaching ideas ************************************* If you like these ideas, you might like my new book, Compete, which is available on all good online retailers.

🚨🌎 THIS IS THE ONE THEY DON’T WALK BACK FROM 𝐀 “𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐢𝐧-𝐚-𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞” 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐭 𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐅 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬……𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. “𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.” That’s not a social-media doomer. That’s Matt Randolph, a Forbes energy contributor, after every major forecast model suddenly converged……the very scenario dismissed all week… until it couldn’t be ignored. This isn’t “a snowstorm.” ❌ 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 ❌ 🧊 Below-zero temps 🧊 Heavy, paralyzing snow 🧊 An ice band forecasting up to THREE INCHES of ice 🗣️Randolph doesn’t mince words: “There’s going to be loss of life.” “The grid is going to fail.” “Refineries will shut down.” “Water systems will go offline.” 🚨And here’s the part being buried🚨 “𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤. 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡.” At that threshold, roads don’t just close….they turn to straight glass. Ambulances can’t reach you., Fire trucks don’t move, Emergency services effectively cease to exist. He compares it to Texas 2021 and says this could be colder, wider, and far harder to recover from. Now ask yourself 👇 ⁉️Why the sudden convergence? ⁉️Why the quiet tone from officials? ⁉️Why no national preparation messaging? Because admitting vulnerability = admitting the grid is already fragile. ⚠️ Weather is the trigger, not the root cause ⚠️ Centralized systems fail together ⚠️ This tests energy, water, logistics, and trust ……all at once! When experts start talking in weeks instead of days, it’s no longer about forecasts. It’s about what happens when the lights don’t come back on ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️ This isn’t hype., this is a huge stress test. ❄️⚡👀

I really love this from Molly Miller, head coach of Grand Canyon Women’s basketball… A psychological breakdown… “𝐈’𝐦 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧” Directing attention onto technique by lowering physical and mental activation (intensity). Drawing on Deliberate Practice (Anders Erickson)…highlight a specific area to focus on - affords the player the opportunity to increase awareness of technique and change it if necessary. Affords the coach the opportunity to critique technique (feedback). “𝐎𝐧𝐞, 𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫…𝐭𝐰𝐨, 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐡, 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞” Tech/tac attentional cues (specific, controllable cues). Reinforcement…but also a bit of checking for understanding (whilst keeping rapid pace of instruction)…demands on player activation (alertness and readiness) in order to keep track of instructions “𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬. 𝐈𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐆𝐚𝐩, 𝐠𝐚𝐩, 𝐈 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩” 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚?” Reinforcing the importance of listening during the game - improving the understanding of in-game information for better interactions. Interactions influence actions (cultivating player listening and attention) “𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥 - 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞” Goal-setting - human beings always have hierarchical goals. Linking tech/tac/phys (pace) with mental (dialogue). Putting these hierarchically first (perhaps more so than performance) “𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐲” Technical cue (perhaps an external focus - handsy ON ball) “𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 - 𝐈’𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐧𝐨 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞, 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞” “𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐣𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐣𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥” “𝐈’𝐦 𝐥𝐨𝐰, 𝐈’𝐦 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥 - 𝐡𝐞’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐠𝐚𝐩, 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. 𝐇𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐠𝐚𝐩 𝐈’𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐭. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈’𝐦 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭? 𝐈’𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲” A broader comment on the instructions here. As a sport psychologist here I’m working with Molly to ensure players are able to process this information deeply and durably into long-term memory. This will help them better learn these actions and interactions…in order to be better at exploiting opportunities and dealing with dangers (anticipation-decision-making). This could include different types of instructions, activity design, the use of motor imagery, utilising video
