This has caused dissatisfaction among the poor cocoa farmers with some now selling their cocoa farms to illegal miners (Galamseyers) since gold is now more valuable than Cocoa and some have resorted to burning of their cocoa as a result. My final stop today was In Bundibugyo District to visit Mr. Benard Kacuro an established farmer into Cocoa growing, palm oil and fish farming. I want to salute the people of Bundibugyo, they “self-educated” themselves and adopted profitable agricultural enterprises such as cocoa and palm oil, independent of government initiation. They didn’t overburden us. They taught themselves. They copied cocoa from Congo. Even before we had focused on it, they were already practicing it. Mr. Kacuro earns approximately Shs 430 million annually from 15 acres, 12 under cocoa and 3 under palm oil. In cocoa alone, he earns Shs 60 million per season. That’s a big investment and I congratulate him. I will address the leaders of the Rwenzori sub-region tomorrow.

That’s very short-sighted analysis and people are retweeting it. For him, it’s supposedly good if the cedi trades at GH¢16/USD so cocoa farmers get ¢3,760 per bag instead of ¢2,587 at GH¢10.9/USD. Cocoa affects only about 10% of livelihoods in Ghana, while currency appreciation impacts the other 90% including stocks, real estate, staple foods, bonds, foreign debt servicing, and overall living standards. Thinking that depreciation ‘benefits’ Ghana just because farmers earn more per bag completely ignores the bigger picture.

COCOA FARMERS HAIRCUT - THE NDC HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE TASTE FOR SPOT PRICES AND THIS IS THE EFFECT ************************************************** Watch this video, as far back as 2023, the NDC disagreed with NPP on forward sales of our cocoa. The only reason why our cocoa farmers have received this haircut is simply as a result of sheer incompetence on the part of the NDC Government. Nothing else!! The NPP Government would usually sell about 70% of Ghana’s cocoa wit forward sales strategy. What that does is that, it insulates Ghana against any future price drops. Of course it has its own inherent difficulties but that’s why the traders are there to do the projections and so far, it has always worked perfectly. The NPP Government started selling Ghana’s 2025 cocoa in October 2024 at price ranging between $7,000 - $8,000 dollars. It’s the reason the NDC government quickly announced a farmer price increase when they took office. Unfortunately, this clueless NDC government instead of taking advantage of the peak price and sell our cocoa with futures decided to stop the forward sales and wait for spot sales and spot prices. Ladies and gentlemen, as they await the spot sales, the price dropped all the way from the $7,200 to $4,200 and still moving downwards. Now this is what is happening, you have set a farmer price of GHc3,600 based on a certain market price. Which you could still have if you were competent enough to know when to sell your cocoa. Because of that poor trading decision, the cocoa you have , which you cld have sold at about $7,200 but didn’t, would now have to be sold at below $4,000. If you do sell at the current price, how do you give the farmer the same price of GHc3,600? That’s the dilemma. But that’s no fault of the farmer, and no fault of any CocoBod legacy debt. That’s poor management and incompetent trading. You do not give the farmer a haircut for your incompetence. Especially when you, the government and Cocobod management have taken no haircut in your salaries and benefits. To begin with, that's a myth. Historical accounts and experts confirm he didn't swallow them this the long sea journey and human digestion would have destroyed the seeds. Instead, he llhid them in his toolbox and brought them to Ghana. Upon returning around 1879, then planted them successfully at Mampong-Akuapem, helping spread cocoa cultivation widely. More importantly, Tetteh Quarshie was not the first to bring cocoa to Ghana. Earlier attempts occurred before him: - Dutch missionaries planted cocoa on the coast as early as 1815. - Basel Missionaries experimented with it from around 1857 (e.g., at Akropong and Aburi), bringing and growing seedlings as part of their agricultural work, though those early efforts didn't lead to large-scale farming. In all of this, Tetteh Quarshie is rightly celebrated as the pioneer who made cocoa a commercial successand widespread crop in Ghana through his practical farming and distribution thus turning it into one of the country's biggest exports but the very first introductions trace back to the missionaries. History has layers beyond the schoolbook legend!

In the NDC Attempt to spin their way out of the crisis they have plunged the cocoa sector into, they attempted to deflect the conversation and pin it in the previous NPP Government even when it’s an obvious miscalculation on the part of the government. They attempted to use debts at CocoBod as the reason for the current situation. This fight is a fight between NDC Government and Ghanaian cocoa farmers. NPP doesn’t come in at all. But for the purposes of records, let me state these few facts! WHAT NPP INHERITED IN 2017 1. The NDC in 2017, left a Debt of GH19 Billion Cedis at CocoBod which was inherited by the NPP. So if they have a 32Billion debt, it include their accumulated debt they left behind plus interest from 2017. 2. The NDC left a rollover liability of about 190,000 metric tonnes for the NPP to deal with 3. In the 2017/2018 period, Cocoa prices on the international market dropped 4. The NDC introduced Cocoa Roads for the first time at Cocobod and left Huge cocoa road debts by the tome they left office in 2017 5. The NDC contracted $1.8 Billion Syndicated loan in 2016 and squandered all without completing the supply of the cocoa beans. Infact after the NDC lost the 2016 elections, between December 9th - 30th December, they spent $400milliom left from that loan paying off Road contractors when we still had cocoa beans to buy and supply INSPITE OF ALL THE ABOVE LIABILITIES The NPP Government then, never used the debt inherited at Cocobod, the dropped international market price , the rollover cocoa beans inherited as an excuse to reduce farmer price. The Akufo-Addo Government then, maintained the farmer price at GH475 so they don’t inconvenience the farmer. The Nana Akufo-Addo Government paid the penalty of $7.5million dollars on the unfulfilled cocoa supply contract by the NDC and went ahead to fulfil the supply. ANOTHER FACT 1. The NPP on 7th January 2025, left in the CocoBod Account at Ghana International Bank, London, an amount of $500million Dollars, Cash. 2. The NPP Government on 7th January 2025 had already sold and expecting revenue in excess of $1billion Dollars 3. That explains why in the first 4 months of 2025, Cocobod received in their accounts revenue amounting to about $1.8billion Dollars as reported in the budget by Hon. Ato Forson. The fact is that, the current situation is simply a poor trading decision and nothing to do with debts at Cocobod, there has never been a moment in our recent history, Cocobod didn’t hav debt and never did debts at Cocobod lead to such massive haircut on Cocoa farmers price. The earlier this government owns up to this incompetence and finds a solution to it the better. The deflections, the attempt to push and short responsibilities, will not work. The farmers deserve better and must have their price restored without delay #CocoafarmersHaircut

In the NDC Attempt to spin their way out of the crisis they have plunged the cocoa sector into, they attempted to deflect the conversation and pin it in the previous NPP Government even when it’s an obvious miscalculation on the part of the government. They attempted to use debts at CocoBod as the reason for the current situation. This fight is a fight between NDC Government and Ghanaian cocoa farmers. NPP doesn’t come in at all. But for the purposes of records, let me state these few facts! WHAT NPP INHERITED IN 2017 1. The NDC in 2017, left a Debt of GH19 Billion Cedis at CocoBod which was inherited by the NPP. So if they have a 32Billion debt, it include their accumulated debt they left behind plus interest from 2017. 2. The NDC left a rollover liability of about 190,000 metric tonnes for the NPP to deal with 3. In the 2017/2018 period, Cocoa prices on the international market dropped 4. The NDC introduced Cocoa Roads for the first time at Cocobod and left Huge cocoa road debts by the tome they left office in 2017 5. The NDC contracted $1.8 Billion Syndicated loan in 2016 and squandered all without completing the supply of the cocoa beans. Infact after the NDC lost the 2016 elections, between December 9th - 30th December, they spent $400milliom left from that loan paying off Road contractors when we still had cocoa beans to buy and supply INSPITE OF ALL THE ABOVE LIABILITIES The NPP Government then, never used the debt inherited at Cocobod, the dropped international market price , the rollover cocoa beans inherited as an excuse to reduce farmer price. The Akufo-Addo Government then, maintained the farmer price at GH475 so they don’t inconvenience the farmer. The Nana Akufo-Addo Government paid the penalty of $7.5million dollars on the unfulfilled cocoa supply contract by the NDC and went ahead to fulfil the supply. ANOTHER FACT 1. The NPP on 7th January 2025, left in the CocoBod Account at Ghana International Bank, London, an amount of $500million Dollars, Cash. 2. The NPP Government on 7th January 2025 had already sold and expecting revenue in excess of $1billion Dollars 3. That explains why in the first 4 months of 2025, Cocobod received in their accounts revenue amounting to about $1.8billion Dollars as reported in the budget by Hon. Ato Forson. The fact is that, the current situation is simply a poor trading decision and nothing to do with debts at Cocobod, there has never been a moment in our recent history, Cocobod didn’t hav debt and never did debts at Cocobod lead to such massive haircut on Cocoa farmers price. The earlier this government owns up to this incompetence and finds a solution to it the better. The deflections, the attempt to push and short responsibilities, will not work. The farmers deserve better and must have their price restored without delay #CocoafarmersHaircut

The Minister of Finance, Hon. Ato Forson, has announced that the price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 season will be increased from $3,100 to $5,040 per tonne. He stated that this represents a 62.58% rise in the producer price and is in line with the NDC's campaign manifesto.
