@ScrippsSports @MontanaGrizFB @eli_gillman Against the #1 Rushing Defense I might add. Absolute unreal performance from Eli Gilman #gilman #Montana

@ScrippsSports @MontanaGrizFB @eli_gillman That’s really cool, and he seems like a really nice guy, but it’s a program record. Is there another program that receives national attention when they break a program record? It’s really kind of silly

NM Highlands completed the New Mexico sweep, winning a 69-55 shoot out over Western NM last night (9/6/25), behind Jeffery Jones’ record breaking performance. True Freshman RB Jeffery Jones broke the D2 freshman single game rushing yards record of 380 yards, which was set Tiffin’s Garrion Corbin on 11/6/02. 🏈Last night, Jones ran for 385 on just 22 carries (20 less carries than Corbin’s 44) and scored 4 TDs, setting the new freshman single game rushing yards record. With a total of 608 rushing yards in his first 2 games, the freshman season rushing yards record of 2,064 (set by Joique Bell of Wayne St in 2006) appears obtainable. Jones needs 1,457 yards in the next 9 games (161.9 yards per game) to break that record. Jones wasn’t the only Highlands’ player that had a great game. Highlands was also led to the win by: 🏈 Tevita Valeti, 11 Carries for 138 Yds & 2 TDs; 🏈 Jaden Montalvo, 5 Kickoff Returns for 187 Yds, including returning the opening kickoff 95 Yds to the house; 🏈 Ike Udengwu, 6 Cmps on 12 Atts for 135 Yds & a TD; 🏈 Mike Jones, 3 Recs for 44 Yds; 🏈 Awsten Turnbow, 11 Tackles (9 Solo & 2 Ast); & 🏈 Britt Alexander, 9 for 9 on PATs & 2 for 2 on FGs (25 Yds & 40 Yds). NM Highlands will be looking for another strong performance from Jones and Valeti when they start conference play by hosting SD Mines next Saturday. Here are a few of NM Highlands’ highlights from last night’s win, including an amazing catch out of the backfield by Jones: #RMAC #RMACfb #TheNewHighlands #CowboyTough #ThisIsHighlands

Luke Altmyer is one of the MOST DISRESPECTED QBs in the Big Ten heading into 2025. After a great 2024 season, this Illinois senior is getting ZERO love from analysts and so-called experts. In 2024, Altmyer was a straight-up game-changer for the Illini, leading them to a 10-3 record (tying the program’s single-season wins record) and three Top-25 victories. He had 2,717 passing yards, 22 TDs, just 6 INTs, plus 217 rushing yards and 4 rushing TDs, and he led the nation with FIVE game-winning drives in the final minute or overtime, including clutch TD passes at Nebraska, vs. Purdue, and at Rutgers. He was the only QB in the nation with three game-winning TD passes in the final 2 minutes/OT. He was the only QB in the nation with four TD passes in a Top-25 road win. He was 36th nationally in passing efficiency (144.90) last year, which is within 5 points of Cade Klubnik, Kyle McCord, Quinn Ewers, Jalen Milroe, and Nico Iamaleava—also tied with Fernando Mendoza. He is the first Illini QB since 2013 with 20+ TD passes in a season. All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and a Davey O’Brien Award Class of 2024 member. Despite all these things, the disrespect is still there. Analysts are leaving him completely off their Top-10 CFB QB lists and even Top-5 Big Ten QB rankings. They’re hyping up unproven freshmen like Bryce Underwood and Malik Washington, or guys with minimal starts like Julian Sayin, over a proven QB1 like Altmyer. Even QBs who haven’t matched his production—Nico Iamaleava, Dante Moore, and Dylan Raiola—are getting more shine. And get this: some NFL Draft sites don’t even list Altmyer as a prospect but have Hank Brown and Malachi Singleton on their boards. Are you kidding me? This is the same Luke Altmyer who turned down a massive NIL deal to jump ship to Tennessee—a CFP team last year—because he’s loyal to Illinois and believes in the Illini Luke stayed in Champaign to finish what he started. That’s a 2025 Wooden Citizen Cup nominee and a leader who walks the walk. The Big Ten is stacked, but Altmyer’s one of the top returning QBs alongside Drew Allar. The hype around untested 5-stars is always high and they'll get their shine this season. But Altmyer’s 35 career TD passes (tied for 9th in Illini history), clutch gene, and third year in Lunney’s system make him a game changer. He’s not just a QB; he’s the heart of a team eyeing their first-ever CFP appearance. So, to the analysts, talking heads, and draft sites sleeping on Luke Altmyer: WAKE UP. This man deserves more respect, and he has a chance to show everyone why sleeping on QB1 in Champaign is a huge mistake. Let’s ride, Illini Nation! #Illini #BigTen #AltmyerSZN

What happened to the aging NFL wide receiver? A thread: I was thinking today about how the NFL hasn’t had a WR sustain elite-level success into his late 30s in a long time. Steve Smith is the perfect example. He was ridiculous from ages 32 to 37. Over his final six seasons, he averaged: 8 targets per game 5 receptions per game 69.6 yards per game That works out to a 17-game pace of roughly 85/1,184/5 from ages 32–37. In 2015, at age 36, before going down with a midseason injury, Smith was on pace for 112/1,627/7. There seems to be a pretty clear cutoff around age 33. The last WR to have a 1,200+ yard season at age 33 or older was Reggie Wayne in 2012. What’s even more fascinating is that high-end WR production beyond 35 is essentially unheard of now, but there was a period where it was surprisingly common. From 1991–2014, there were 17 instances of a WR recording 1,000+ receiving yards at age 35 or older. A couple of interesting takeaways: 10 of the 17 happened at exactly age 35, and Jerry Rice accounts for three of the seven age-36+ seasons by himself. Rice putting up 1,211 yards at FORTY years old is absurd -- his receiving record likely won't be broken. As of the end of the 2025 NFL season, we’ve now gone 11 straight seasons without a 35+ year old WR reaching 1,000 yards. Since 2020, we’ve seen just two WRs age 31 or older put up 1,100+ receiving yards: Keenan Allen with 1,243 yards at age 31 and Davante Adams with 1,144 yards at age 31... both in 2023. Ironically, those two guys might be our best chance to see sustained, high-level WR play into the mid-30s again. So what has changed? Why does it seem like high-end WR play beyond age 33 has basically disappeared over the last decade? My thoughts below: (Smith is 35 years old in the clip below).

Thirty-seven years ago, the Crimson Tide turned a disastrous start in Jackson, Miss., into a 62-27 victory and one of the most remarkable comebacks in Alabama Football history on Oct. 7, 1989. The Ole Miss Rebels had beaten Alabama 22-12 in Tuscaloosa the previous season, and the opening minutes at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium suggested another frustrating afternoon for Bill Curry’s team. A blocked punt and an interception helped Ole Miss build a 21-0 lead with 8:18 still remaining in the first quarter. Alabama entered the game unbeaten at 3-0, but now faced a three-touchdown deficit before the game was seven minutes old. Then Alabama unleashed an avalanche. The Crimson Tide scored 48 points before halftime, turning that 21-0 deficit into a 48-21 lead. Philip Doyle’s 23-yard field goal with 11:26 remaining in the second quarter put Alabama ahead for good. The Rebels’ stunning start had become a distant memory before the teams even reached their locker rooms. Gary Hollingsworth directed the comeback with 363 passing yards and five touchdown passes, establishing Alabama’s single-game touchdown-pass record at the time. Craig Sanderson and Marco Battle each caught two scoring passes, while fullback Kevin Turner caught the other. Turner finished with 10 receptions for 126 yards and added a rushing touchdown on a fake field goal. Alabama’s defense joined the onslaught by forcing seven Ole Miss turnovers, and the Tide also blocked a field goal. Murry Hill rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, while Siran Stacy’s fourth-quarter touchdown run completed Alabama’s 62-point scoring streak.

Some may call it an upset, but Chadron St simply calls it another day at the office, beating the #9/#11 Western CO Mountaineers on Saturday (11/8/25) in OT by a score of 27-24. Chadron got it done in all three phases of the game. The Eagles’ offense presented a balanced attack, gaining 111 yards and 2 TDs passing to go along with 148 yards and 1 TD rushing. The Eagles’ defense held the Mountaineers to a mere 38 yards rushing, had 7 tackles for loss, including 3 sacks, and came up with a fumble recovery and 2 interceptions. The most impressive part of Chadron’s team on Saturday had to be its special teams. The Eagles’ special teams blocked two field goal attempts and blocked a punt. Punter Brodie Eisenbraun stuck one punt inside the 5, drew a running into the punter penalty for a 1st down, and had an amazing run off of a high snap, which while it was not a 1st down, it shows what a stud he is. Then there is Kicker Wilson Yee. Yee made an impressive 50 yard FG in the 2nd quarter. Then, in OT, with ice in his veins, Yee made the biggest kick of his collegiate career, drilling a 47 yard FG to give the Eagles the win. Also leading Chadron to the win were: 🏈 DJ Ralph, 10 Cmps on 22 Atts for 111 Yds & 2 TDs; 🏈 Tommy Thomas, 4 Recs for 66 Yds & 2 TDs; 🏈 Logan O’Brien, 10 Tackles (7 Solo & 3 Ast); 🏈 Cooper Walton, 10 Tackles (5 Solo & 5 Ast) with 1 TFL, including 1/2 a Sack; 🏈 Dax Yeradi, 4 Solo Tackles; 🏈 Aiden Kuester, 4 Tackles (1 Solo & 3 Ast) with 1/2 a TFL & 2 INTs, 🏈 William Stemler, 4 Tackles (3 Solo & 1 Ast) with 2 TFLs, including 1 Sack; & 🏈 Ryder True, 3 Tackles (1 Solo & 2 Ast) with 1.5 Sacks. Chadron will be playing for the RMAC Championship next Saturday when they travel to battle the CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves. ⬛ Austin Ekeler: From D2 to the League He ran for 5,857 yards at Western Colorado Football. Signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Led the NFL in touchdowns twice. Now with the Washington Commanders and still producing strong. He’s one of the best to ever come out of Division II. ⬇️ Western State, now Western Colorado, was the only program that offered him a shot at running back. He stayed four full years and became one of the most productive players the RMAC has ever seen. He averaged 146 rushing yards and 1.6 touchdowns per game over 40 starts. He put together one of the strongest careers in D2 history...and he didn’t have to leave to do it. At Western, Ekeler dominated. He averaged more than 100 rushing yards per game across four seasons, led the country in all-purpose yards in 2015, and earned academic honors alongside his on-field production. By the time he wrapped up his senior year, he was a Harlon Hill finalist with nearly 6,000 rushing yards to his name. His work was undeniable. But he still didn’t get a Combine invite. The draft came and went. No calls. Then the Los Angeles Chargers brought him into camp on a rookie deal and gave him a shot. He took it from there. He made the roster as a rookie and started producing immediately. First as a change-of-pace option. Then as a third-down threat. Then as the guy. In 2021 and 2022, he led the NFL in total touchdowns. He stacked back-to-back seasons with more than 1,500 scrimmage yards and at least 15 total scores. He caught 107 passes in 2022, the most by any running back in Los Angeles Chargers history. The production hasn’t slowed down. In 2024, he signed with the Washington Commanders. He’s still outworking people. Division II didn’t slow him down. It prepared him. The hours. The discipline. The ability to carry the weight of a program while juggling everything else college throws at you. That’s what this level teaches. That’s why it sticks. There are players right now doing the same thing. Grinding through the spring, stacking film, putting together complete seasons. Some will make it. Not because someone finally believed in them, but because they never stopped believing in themselves. That’s what turns a D2 shot into an NFL career. ⬛ College Career 🔹 5,857 rushing yards, 63 total touchdowns 🔹 4× First-Team All-RMAC Sports 🔹 2013 RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year 🔹 Led D2 in all-purpose yards per game (203.9) in 2015 🔹 2016 Harlon Hill Trophy Finalist 🔹 First-Team Academic All-America (CoSIDA) 🔹 RMAC Academic Player of the Year (2014) 🔹 2018 Western Colorado Alumni Award of Excellence ⬛ NFL Career 🔹 Signed by Los Angeles Chargers in 2017 (UDFA) 🔹 NFL leader in total touchdowns: 20 (2021), 18 (2022) 🔹 Only player with 10+ rush and 5+ receiving TDs in back-to-back seasons since Marshall Faulk 🔹 One of two UDFAs with 1,500+ scrimmage yards and 15+ TDs in two straight years (with Priest Holmes) 🔹 107 catches in 2022, most by a running back in Los Angeles Chargers history 🔹 PFF Second-Team All-Pro (2019) 🔹 NFL Top 100: Ranked #21 in 2023 🔹 AFC Offensive Player of the Week (Week 17, 2022) 🔹 Over 7,000 scrimmage yards and 70+ career touchdowns 🔹 Signed with the Washington Commanders in 2024 ⬛ Off the Field 🔹 Owns more than 115 rental properties in Colorado and Missouri 🔹 Built the Eksperience app to connect athletes and fans 🔹 Co-founded Gridiron Gaming Group 🔹 75+ endorsement deals (Adidas, Chipotle, Frito-Lay, more) 🔹 Founded the Austin Ekeler Foundation in 2021 🔹 Former host of “Ekeler’s Edge” with Yahoo Sports Ekeler’s story isn’t rare because he came from Division II. It stands out because he stayed in it, believed in it, and maxed it out. That’s what this level does when the right player buys in. Just 10 years ago today Alabama Football finished one of the craziest championship runs in college football history. The next step of the Nick Saban dynasty was the toughest. No blowout. No margin for error. Just resilience, power and nerve as Alabama outlasted Clemson, 45–40, in a College Football Playoff title game that became a classic on Jan. 11, 2016. Derrick Henry, O.J. Howard, and Kenyan Drake delivered the explosive plays. Long touchdowns, relentless pressure and timely answers against a Clemson team led by Deshaun Watson, who matched Alabama blow for blow all night. With the score tied 24–24 and 10:34 left in the fourth quarter, Saban made the boldest call of his career — the now-legendary pop-up onside kick. Adam Griffith executed it perfectly. Marlon Humphrey secured it. Momentum flipped in an instant. “I made the decision to do it because the score was tied and we were tired on defense,” Saban said. “I felt like if we didn’t do something or take a chance to change the momentum of the game, we wouldn’t have a chance to win.” Moments later, Jake Coker found O.J. Howard uncovered once again for a 51-yard touchdown. Clemson responded, but Kenyan Drake answered with a stunning 95-yard kickoff return TD as the fourth quarter turned into a track meet. Watson finished with over 400 passing yards and four touchdowns, but Henry slammed the door late with his third rushing score. After early-season doubts and a September loss to Ole Miss, the Tide stood on top once more — four national championships in seven seasons, Saban’s fifth overall, and Alabama’s first in the playoff era.
