To be clear, nobody has lost their job. Any previous contracts ended with the election, and those positions will simply not be renewed. Our group was also entitled to appoint a political assistant. We could have insisted on keeping the scheme and taking our share of the benefit. We chose not to. The saving to the taxpayer is £163,000. Some opposition councillors argued that these roles are necessary. We disagree. Councillors are elected to represent residents, scrutinise decisions and make political arguments. Taxpayers should not be expected to fund what are in effect party-political staff to do that for them. We were told we don’t know what we are talking about. They didn’t realise that although a lot of our Councillors are new to local government and how it works - I am not! More importantly, the council’s financial position is extremely serious. We cannot continue with the mindset that every existing cost is untouchable. The old way of doing things has brought local government to a point where difficult decisions are unavoidable. Everything must be looked at. Everything must be challenged. Everything must justify its existence. When councils are under immense financial pressure, spending £163,000 on political assistants is exactly the kind of cost that should be questioned. This decision alone will not solve the council’s financial problems. But it sends a clear message about the direction of travel. The culture has to change. For too long there has been an assumption that because something has always existed, it should continue to exist. We reject that thinking. We refuse to join the club. Residents expect us to treat public money with the same care they treat their own household budgets. That’s exactly what we intend to do. The era of business as usual is over. The Democrat Treasurer Allegedly Ripped Off an Old Lady. The Media Ignored the Scandal by Charlie LeDuff Charlie LeDuff Traci Kornak, the former treasurer of the Michigan Democratic Party, was hauled into probate court this week, suspected of embezzling from her ward, a brain-damaged elderly woman. I caught Kornak feasting on the woman’s finances nearly four years ago and have written many stories about it since. I’ve made TV appearances. I even lost my newspaper job over it. After my first story was published, Attorney General Dana Nessel, a close friend of Kornak, opened a superficial investigation that was no investigation at all. Her detectives made a few cursory phone calls before Nessel prodded them into shutting down the criminal case. And Kornak, it is alleged, continued to suck the old woman dry. At least that is what a special fiduciary attorney, Morgan Maul, believes. Using phrases like “significant discrepancies” and “missing assets” and “concerns about charges,” Maul asked Jolene Clearwater, the chief probate judge of Allegan County, for a six-month extension of his investigation into Kornak’s decade-long conservatorship over the woman’s finances. The old woman died last April, and now the judge wants to know what happened to her money. Her condominium? Her insurance settlement from the car accident? Her trust? Her estate plan? Who made debit card purchases on the day of her death? Not only did Clearwater agree to Maul’s request, she also ruled that Kornak—a slip-and-fall attorney by trade—must pay for Maul’s time. Kornak, for her part, said nothing in defense of herself. What began as a story about a simple insurance scam perpetrated by Kornak in the name of the old woman has morphed into a scandal implicating Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and threatening the impeachment of Dana Nessel. Kornak was a suspected embezzler, and Whitmer and Nessel knew about the allegations. Nevertheless, they allowed her to continue in her political position as treasurer of the state Democratic Party. In fact, Whitmer was planning to appoint Kornak to a judgeship as soon as the criminal investigation went away. But Kornak was never given a judicial robe, because I would not let the story die. After Nessel complained about a column I published in the Detroit News chronicling her unethical interference in the Kornak investigation, I replied to her on social media with the phrase “See You Next Tuesday”—a euphemism for female genitalia. My pearl-clutching colleagues at the News feigned outrage, tarred me as a misogynist, and I was forced to resign. Professional jealousy is an ugly thing. Not another word was written in the paper about the scandal, and I canceled my subscription. But I kept publishing. First online, and now with Michigan Enjoyer. And so here we are. Tuesday has arrived. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office has completed its own two-year investigation into Kornak’s stewardship of the old woman’s financial affairs. Among its recommendations are charges of felony embezzlement, which carries a 20-year prison term. That report now sits on the desk of Chris Becker, the Kent County prosecutor, who is considering charges. Most nauseating about this whole affair—beyond the alleged abuse of an elder who could not fend for herself —is that those in power knew all along. I called them. I shouted questions at them. I mocked them online, in print, and on TV. Who are THEY? THEY are those who were in a position to protect the old woman. The governor. The attorney general. The Democratic Party brass. The Attorney Grievance Commission. The Probate Court. The Media. THEY only proved themselves to be what THEY accused me of being—misogynists, abusers of women. Worse, THEY proved themselves to be cowards. There is a light in this dark story. Enjoyer has learned that the FBI has begun making inquiries into the sordid affair. If justice can prevail, then things might be better for the next old lady.

Malda was not random. NIA has been given the investigation. Mofakkarul Islam, accused mastermind of Malda violence is a TMC leader, who has been arrested. He is seen with TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee in several pictures. My reading: when Bengal’s ruling machine panics over voter scrutiny, Malda is where the nerves show first. It is a border district with a 165.5 km frontier with Bangladesh and a key junction in North Bengal’s political geography. That geography matters. Because in a place like Malda, demography, documentation, migration anxieties, and electoral arithmetic are never separate conversations. They collapse into one political reality. District-level population data shows Malda’s religious profile and demography has shifted over time, making it one of Bengal’s most politically sensitive districts. Demographic data alone is enough. But in a border district long associated with infiltration debates, fake-currency routes, smuggling corridors, and political patronage, nobody can honestly pretend these issues are disconnected from voter-roll politics. Then comes Kaliachak. For years, Kaliachak and the wider Malda belt have repeatedly surfaced in reporting around cross-border criminality, counterfeit currency, and mob volatility. This is not some politically neutral patch of land. It is one of the most combustible belts in Bengal. So when seven judicial officers were gheraoed there for hours during voter-list adjudication, this did not look to me like a spontaneous local protest. It looked like a political stress reaction. But the issue is no longer merely what happened in Malda. The real question is: who benefits when voter scrutiny in a district like Malda is met with siege tactics, blocked highways, and intimidation of officers? My answer is blunt. Malda is politically precious. Historically it was a Congress bastion. Over time, as Congress weakened, Trinamool moved aggressively into this minority-heavy, border-sensitive belt because districts like Malda and Murshidabad became central to its political insulation. That is why Malda is not just another district for TMC. It is a bastion. And bastions are defended by every possible means once panic sets in. Now add the most recent development. Police have arrested Mofakkarul Islam, described in reporting as the alleged mastermind of the Malda gherao, from Bagdogra Airport while he was allegedly trying to leave for Bengaluru. Another accused was arrested with him. That matters. Because the moment the alleged main conspirator begins to look less like an outraged citizen and more like an operator trying to slip away, the moral theatre around “public anger” starts collapsing. Then the whole episode begins to look exactly like what many suspected from the start: organised pressure, political shielding, and then attempted escape once the heat came home asking difficult questions. To my mind, that is the real significance of Malda. This is where border anxiety, demographic change, identity mobilisation, electoral dependence, and administrative murk all collide. And that is precisely why TMC cannot afford to lose control of the district’s political arithmetic. Because once a serious clean-up begins in a place like Malda, the fight is no longer over names on paper. It becomes a fight over the ecosystem that benefited from blurred lines for years. The CPM played versions of this game. TMC perfected it. And now the Supreme Court has exposed what happens when that ecosystem feels threatened: highways are blocked, judges are surrounded, the state looks away, and grievance is weaponised into muscle. So no, Malda was not random. Malda was the point. Because in Bengal, when power feels threatened, it does not defend the voter list. It defends the vote-bank architecture of Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee behind it.
