The bridge was inaugurated on 16 November 2023 and opened to traffic by Mr Samdup Lepcha, Honourable Minister of Roads and Bridges Department, Government of Sikkim in presence of officials of Indian Army, BRO, local administration and the resilient people of Sikkim . #IndianArmy launches Operation #HimSetu in #NorthSikkim to evacuate stranded tourists from #Lachen after landslides cut off connectivity. #TrishaktiCorps under the aegis of #EasternCommand continues to spearhead evacuation efforts despite heavy snowfall and extreme weather. 135 tourists along with their vehicles have been safely evacuated, with medical cases given priority. In the last one year, floods in Assam, unprecedented rains and subsequent landslides in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Kerala, different parts of our country have unfortunately been hit by natural calamities. While the brave personnel of NDRF India I राष्ट्रीय आपदा मोचन बल 🇮🇳, #SDRF supported by other local and central forces worked round the clock to ensure relief and rescue, not many people notice the work in the background that our Oil Companies do on a war footing like #GoodCorporateCitizens to ensure all possible support. ATF supplies were rushed to the forward helipads from places as far as Dehradun, Saraswa and Mohali as stranded locals and tourists had to be rescued and evacuated from hilly areas of Uttarakhand by air due to landslides on the roads. A 24*7 war room was set up Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas #MoPNG staffed by senior officials and our Oil Marketing Companies lead by Indian Oil Corp Ltd to ensure that affected people reached their destinations as quickly as possible. I Return to Jama Masjid After Month-Long Restrictions Condemn Brutal Killings, Pay Tribute to Victims and Rescuers Urge Safety for Kashmiris, Denounce Media Vilification Today, after more than one month, authorities allowed me to come to Jama Masjid. Repeatedly, I am barred from delivering the Friday sermon and offering prayers here, which, while being condemnable, is cruel to me and all those who come here to listen to the sermon, and to all Muslims of the valley who are deeply upset by such measures. I once again ask the authorities to desist from pursuing the approach of bans and bars. Sadly, during this time, we had to witness a terrifying incident which has left our hearts bleeding. The manner in which a carnage was carried out—more than two dozen people killed after ascertaining their identities and in front of their families—is shocking and chilling beyond belief. We strongly condemn it. Who better can understand the pain and grief of loss to the families of those affected than a people who have suffered it for decades and still continue to. Today, as I say this, as per the Islamic calendar, it is the 36th martyrdom anniversary of my father, Shaheed-e-Millat Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq, and seventy others who lost their lives on this tragic day. Our hearts go out to these families who will never see their loved ones again, and our prayers are with them. We also pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. Kashmiris have always opened their hearts and homes to outsiders, especially tourists. Known for our hospitality to visitors, people of Kashmir once again upheld the tradition of outreach, help, and humanity in this distressing time. The manner in which a carnage was carried out—more than two dozen people killed after ascertaining their identities and in front of their families—is shocking and chilling beyond belief. We strongly condemn it. Who better can understand the pain and grief of loss to the families of those affected than a people who have suffered it for decades and still continue to. Today, as I say this, as per the Islamic calendar, it is the 36th martyrdom anniversary of my father, Shaheed-e-Millat Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq, and seventy others who lost their lives on this tragic day. Our hearts go out to these families who will never see their loved ones again, and our prayers are with them. We also pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. //The Wire//1100Z February 23, 2026// //PRIORITY// //BLUF: CARTEL WAR KICKS OFF IN MEXICO AS CJNG LEADER KILLED BY MEXICAN FORCES.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events- Mexico: Yesterday afternoon Mexican forces conducted a raid in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco, with the objective of capturing Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes (Alias: "El Mencho"), the leader of the CJNG Cartel. During the operation, El Mencho was killed, which triggered heavy fighting between the Mexican government and the CJNG cartel throughout the afternoon. So far, most of the heavy fighting has been observed in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, two cities which have historically served as CJNG strongholds. Immediately after Mencho's death, CJNG forces declared a general mobilization throughout Jalisco, which encompasses most of their territory. Most of the fighting throughout the afternoon took the form of knee-jerk, rapid response elements engaging Mexican authorities with small arms and crew served weapons, mostly via skirmishes in the street in various small towns scattered throughout the district. Violence is not confined to just Jalisco, burning vehicles were observed in the town of Reynosa, just across the border from McAllen, Texas. Throughout the evening, a more organized and substantial deployment was undertaken, with heavier weapons and armored vehicles being deployed to engage government forces throughout the region. In the town of Puerto Vallarta, combat actions were reported throughout the afternoon with CJNG briefly holding the city for some time. Within a few hours, Government forces rolled in hard with air support, pushing CJNG out of the city (or at least, out of fighting positions on the street) by nightfall. Throughout the countryside, many roads are impassable due to cartel forces digging anti-tank ditches across the roadway, emplacing roadblocks, and otherwise digging in for what they perceive to be a draw-out fight. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: Throughout much of Mexico, the situation can be described as a state of pandemonium and chaos. There's no way to determine front lines or Centers of Gravity at the moment, as all of the violence observed throughout the afternoon is representative of whatever combat power local CJNG cells had at their safehouses. El Mencho was the patriarch of the CJNG, and more of a grandfather figurehead of the cartel family than an operational leader. As one might expect, killing a sicario's grandfather in such a manner has dialed the violence up to eleven. As soon as word got out that El Mencho was dead, everyone grabbed their rifles and started shooting at whatever Mexican authorities were in their area. The next few days will probably see even more organized violence as cartel leadership organizes more significantly for combat actions in the long term. Since the CJNG cartel has been allied with the Gulf Cartel for some time, violence has continued right up to the US border. Due to the rapid breakout of war throughout the region, most entities were not expecting small arms engagements on a peaceful Sunday afternoon. Cities known for heavy tourism industry are directly in the center of much of the fighting, with off-season tourists being caught in the middle of the conflict. As a reminder, Guadalajara is scheduled to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, and right now many high-level soccer matches have brought scores of tourists and sports fans to the exact district that is now host to heavy fighting. Guests at the many tourist resorts scattered throughout the region suddenly found their afternoon cocktail hour interrupted by gunfire and shrapnel, and throughout the evening most civilians throughout the region spent many hours sheltering in place, or fleeing the area if they could. The US State Department has issued shelter-in-place orders for the following areas: Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Tecate, Ensenada, Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Concerning evacuations, the Guadalajara Airport has been closed until further notice, while the conflict continues on the ground in the vicinity of the airport. If the Erbil strike also damaged the radar array, it is also very possible that the warning time for an incoming ballistic missile would have been reduced, so any defenses at the target base would have been less effective. Obviously, the true scale of the damage to this air defense site would be classified, so in the public eye we have to guess as to how bad it was based on blurry satellite imagery. However the military commanders who knew the systems and did NOT have to guess, were also the same commanders who had the authority to either issue warnings or orders to disperse from the unprotected Containerized Housing Units (CHUs) that were struck by Iran. The failure of command to disperse their soldiers is what led to these fatalities. The very minute that the Patriot battery was struck in Erbil was a major clue that the Iranians were conducting shaping fires of their own...they were striking the air defense sites so as to open up a gap in air defense coverage, and reach out to American positions with their larger ballistic missiles. Though it is usually in poor taste to reflect on failures in the immediate aftermath of the death of troops, in the interest of expediency sometimes uncomfortable conversations must be had in order to prevent further loss of life. If a gap in air defense coverage is what allowed this strike to happen, it is almost certain that this gap still exists and that the danger to American service members is still not mitigated. For ALL American troops in the Middle East, this observation must be noted: If the Iranians are striking air defense sites, the next assumption must be that the Iranians are planning to strike something that would have been protected by that site. In retrospect this is common sense, but even at this very moment, the continued strikes on American positions (and the nearly total lack of fortification efforts at these bases, even to this day) continues to indicate that the Iranian targeting efforts are not being taken seriously by senior American decision makers. Five months into this war, CENTCOM leadership has still not figured out that the Iranians can strike their bases at will, and as demonstrated by the strikes in Kuwait and Jordan, the US is still not digging in, and also not dispersing enough to avoid troops getting killed. No underground fortification efforts have been undertaken at any base in the Middle East, and satellite imagery indicates that no substantial fortifications have been undertaken either. Granting as much leeway to the Pentagon's decision making process as possible, it is possible that no hardening of defenses would have mattered considering the missiles Iran is launching. Drone defense is one thing, but it would take years to build a bunker that would withstand the impact of an Iranian Fattah or Ghadr missile. Nevertheless, when it comes to defending American positions, doing something is better than doing nothing, and concrete does not take half a year to dry. Even if large-scale construction projects are off the menu, ALL military publications, textbooks, and training scenarios dictate and demand what has been obvious since World War One...Dispersion is the name of the game. This is what kept casualties to a minimum in Bahrain, but different theater commanders have different personal initiatives. However the military commanders who knew the systems and did NOT have to guess, were also the same commanders who had the authority to either issue warnings or orders to disperse from the unprotected Containerized Housing Units (CHUs) that were struck by Iran. The failure of command to disperse their soldiers is what led to these fatalities. The very minute that the Patriot battery was struck in Erbil was a major clue that the Iranians were conducting shaping fires of their own...they were striking the air defense sites so as to open up a gap in air defense coverage, and reach out to American positions with their larger ballistic missiles. Though it is usually in poor taste to reflect on failures in the immediate aftermath of the death of troops, in the interest of expediency sometimes uncomfortable conversations must be had in order to prevent further loss of life. For ALL American troops in the Middle East, this observation must be noted: If the Iranians are striking air defense sites, the next assumption must be that the Iranians are planning to strike something that would have been protected by that site. In retrospect this is common sense, but even at this very moment, the continued strikes on American positions (and the nearly total lack of fortification efforts at these bases, even to this day) continues to indicate that the Iranian targeting efforts are not being taken seriously by senior American decision makers. Five months into this war, CENTCOM leadership has still not figured out that the Iranians can strike their bases at will, and as demonstrated by the strikes in Kuwait and Jordan, the US is still not digging in, and also not dispersing enough to avoid troops getting killed. No underground fortification efforts have been undertaken at any base in the Middle East, and satellite imagery indicates that no substantial fortifications have been undertaken either. Granting as much leeway to the Pentagon's decision making process as possible, it is possible that no hardening of defenses would have mattered considering the missiles Iran is launching. This is what kept casualties to a minimum in Bahrain, but different theater commanders have different personal initiatives. Some are more proactive with their defense, and others have done nothing at all, besides making sure that all of the vehicles in the motorpool are lined up neatly. The latest example: the Comfort Inn on Kingston Road in Pickering, Ont., is now owned by Durham Region. It was recently “repurposed” to provide temporary housing for asylum claimants. Translation: members of the taxpaying public are persona non grata at the so-called “Durham Reception Centre” but non-citizens are warmly welcomed. Yet, the question arises: in these tough times, is this a prudent use of taxpayer dollars? We went to the former Comfort Inn to interview City of Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson. She is the lone voice on council who is highly critical of this program and laments that there was zero public input into this initiative as the meetings about the property were held in secret. But while on site, we learned about an astounding piece of information that has received no publicity whatsoever. Namely, “guests” at the reception centre are only allowed to stay there for a maximum of 90 days. So, what happens when that three-month term expires? Do these people seek accommodation at city shelters? Do they join the rank and file of the local tent city? But no. It appears they get upgraded, not downgraded! Case in point: we approached an African man in the parking lot in a late-model SUV. He told us he used to stay at the former Comfort Inn, but he now lives in a house. He also told us that he remains unemployed. So, who is paying the rent for that house? You guessed it: the ever-beleaguered taxpayer. Note: the average rent for a house in Pickering is $2,650. Then, things got weird. Staff and security at the former motel called the police. Why? Good question. Two police SUVs soon arrived. The officers were very cordial. We explained our purpose for being there and they passed on to us that a representative from Durham Region was en route to answer our queries. In the meantime, we were welcome to stay on the property. And then things got weirder: after about an hour passed, one of the police officers informed us that the person we were waiting to interview from Durham Region had changed his mind. Apparently, he would not be leaving his office at Durham Region – a headquarters that features a $1 million revolving door, by the way. Bottom line: it would appear those bureaucrats gainfully employed at Durham Region are not only good at wasting taxpayer money but they also excel at wasting everyone’s time. That’s unfortunate. There are so many questions about this “reception centre”. But there remains a dearth of tangible answers – which is egregious given that the taxpayer is funding this program. Prior to our visit, we did reach out previously via email to Durham Region. Here were our queries: 1⃣ If this is a federal government initiative, why is Durham Region involved? 2⃣ What are the capital costs and operating costs pertaining to this facility? 3⃣ Homelessness and food bank usage have rapidly increased this past decade. How do we win the war on poverty if we keep importing the world’s impoverished? 4⃣ Is this facility exclusively for illegal aliens or can domestic homeless people access it? If not, why not? 5⃣ From which countries to the illegal aliens originate from? Alas, none of our questions were directly answered. Instead, we were provided with the following statement: “The Government of Canada provided funding, to the Region of Durham, to purchase a former hotel in Pickering. It will become the Durham Reception Centre. Located at 533 Kingston Road, in Pickering, the centre will provide temporary accommodation and supports for asylum claimants through the Durham Humanitarian Response Program (DHRP). Ukrainian nationals began staying here in 2022. By 2023, all asylum claimants were welcome at this site. And as of March 31, 2026, the program had assisted 1,957 people, with 1,244 putting down roots in this region. The location was purchased with funding from the federal Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP), which will also help to support some future operating costs. Securing a dedicated interim housing facility was a core requirement of the IHAP funding. It also aligns with several priorities outlined in the Durham Region 2025–2035 Strategic Plan. Although owned by the Region, the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD) will operate the site. The team will provide temporary accommodations and settlement services for up to 250 asylum claimants who will stay for no more than 90 days. An asylum claimant is someone who arrives here then asks for help to stay safe. There is no federal income support while their claim is being decided. Municipalities and community organizations step in to help. Asylum claimants are different from government‑assisted refugees. The Durham Reception Centre strengthens this work by providing a dedicated, federally funded facility where individuals and families can safely and efficiently transition into long‑term, independent housing and begin building their lives in Durham Region."
