Oleksii Honcharenko said: “The actions of President Volodymyr Zelensky increasingly contradict the values that we are defending here—democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Human rights. An absolutely brutal and corrupt mobilization system, in which the wealthy and the loyal can ‘buy their way out’ of their obligations, while others can be beaten and even killed by representatives of the Territorial Recruitment Centers.”

This award honours outstanding civil society action in defence of human rights across Europe and beyond. Butkevych is a co-founder of the Human Rights Centre Zmina and Hromadske Radio, and for many years has stood at the forefront of defending freedom of expression and dignity. After the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, he volunteered to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces, serving as a platoon commander. In June 2022, he was captured by Russian forces and sentenced to 13 years in prison in a sham trial. For more than two years, he endured harsh imprisonment before finally being released in a prisoner exchange in October 2024. Accepting the award, Butkevych dedicated it to Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians illegally detained by Russia, as well as all fellow journalists deprived of their liberty in authoritarian regimes. Since their transfer, they have not been seen, and authorities have denied access to both their families and legal counsel. This complete lack of transparency has raised serious concerns about their safety, including fears of potential torture in custody. In response, the families of the detained leaders gathered in front of the Civil Lines Police Station to demand their legal and moral right to visit their loved ones. The Superintendent of Police informed them that no meetings would be permitted without a court order. However, even after obtaining the necessary court directives, police have continued to deny access. Only the mothers of Dr. Mahrang Baloch and Beebow Baloch have been granted brief visits, while all other family members and legal representatives remain barred. In protest against these illegal and authoritarian actions, the families have initiated a peaceful sit-in outside the Civil Lines Police Station. We urgently call on national and international human rights organizations to intervene and hold the responsible authorities accountable. The state’s unconstitutional actions and continued targeting of human rights defenders must not go unchecked. My heart weeps for our community in #Ghana following the passing of the stringent anti-LGBTQ law a few hours ago. This legislation, one of the most severe in Africa, not only perpetuates the punishment of LGBTQ+ individuals but also criminalises the vital support and advocacy for these communities. It’s a dark day for human rights in Ghana, and my thoughts are with everyone who now faces even more significant challenges in living their truth. As the Director General of Uganda Key Populations Consortium , I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of community and the resilience of those fighting for their right to love and exist freely. The passage of this law is a stark reminder of the battles still ahead in the journey toward equality and justice. Now, more than ever, our brothers and sisters in Ghana need our support and solidarity. We must rally to amplify their voices and challenge this affront to human dignity. The fight for human rights knows no borders, and we stand with the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana, advocating for a world where everyone’s rights are protected and cherished. I urge the global community, leaders, and human rights advocates to join us in this critical moment. Let’s work tirelessly to reverse this regression and reaffirm our commitment to human rights for all, regardless of who they love.

As the Director General of Uganda Key Populations Consortium , I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of community and the resilience of those fighting for their right to love and exist freely. The passage of this law is a stark reminder of the battles still ahead in the journey toward equality and justice. Now, more than ever, our brothers and sisters in Ghana need our support and solidarity. We must rally to amplify their voices and challenge this affront to human dignity. The fight for human rights knows no borders, and we stand with the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana, advocating for a world where everyone’s rights are protected and cherished. I urge the global community, leaders, and human rights advocates to join us in this critical moment. Let’s work tirelessly to reverse this regression and reaffirm our commitment to human rights for all, regardless of who they love.
