Rather like the Ospedale della Pietร  in Venice, which cared for abandoned & orphaned children. Vivaldi was resident composer/violin teacher there, and its all-female orchestra was famous throughout the music world. As in this clip, no doubt Vivaldi conducted from the harpsichord.
