A press conference was held with the Meitei Supporters of Lucknow at Uttar Pradesh Press Club, Lucknow. Davnesh Dixit also took part in the press conference and spoke in support of the Meiteis. In 1950 the Schedule Tribe list was prepared and the Meiteis was excluded from the list which came out in 1951 census. I posted this yesterday: wherever a tiger goes in any kind of forest, that becomes its territory whether it is the core of a tiger reserve, the buffer, or even unclassified forest. Here is a painful figure. More than 115 tigers have already died in India in the last seven months. Some of these deaths happened inside tiger reserves. Most happened while tigers were moving from one area to another road accidents, train hits, or poisoning. With a rising population and the search for food and better habitat, these animals are moving from place to place. In nature this looks like normal behaviour, and it is. But if a tiger is only moving from one forest to another forest, why is security not locked down along those routes? If Type-4 level monitoring of tigers actually happened, no tiger would be killed so easily. What shows instead is carelessness, laziness and work-avoidance among forest staff. Every one of these deaths happened in the forest not in a village, not in a forest settlement. Is the figure of 115 even correct? I will tell you: it is not. The real number is higher. Many deaths have not even come to notice. In M-STrIPES monitoring itself, many cubs were never registered. When they go missing, they never enter the record. Have tigresses in India produced 150 cubs in the last seven months? The answer is no they have not. If we discuss only the death numbers, have we already reached the maximum possible tiger population? In plain words: have India’s existing forests already hit carrying capacity? New reserves are stuck in cold storage. Political actors block them with one laughable excuse after another. Officials are also told by their bosses to keep these proposals hanging. It is equally necessary to strengthen the forests where tigers already live, and the routes they use in transit better habitat, minimum unauthorised entry by villagers, and wild herbivores raised to the required capacity. One example: in a dry state like Rajasthan, if all breeding tigresses of Ramgarh and Mukundra produce cubs today, by the time that next generation grows up there will be a severe prey shortage under present conditions. Those cubs will then push on in search of better habitat. But Rajasthan does not even have strong corridors in its forests. I do not understand what scientific innovation is actually stopping tigers deaths, making it easy for tigers to register their presence in new areas, or helping them breed and increase numbers in the present situation. Until human pressure in these forests is controlled, this will not become easier. The Centre and the states need a serious review. Wake up in time. There are thousands of blacksmiths on site who fabricate various tools used for illegal mining activities, including shovels, diggers, chisels, and hammers. There is a high rate of child labour at the illegal mining site, also known as Daba. These children are used mainly for sorting lithium from rocks. It is imperative that both the Kwara State Government, Oyo State Government, and the Federal Government get hold of this before it becomes a security problem for the whole country. Many of my fellow Indians struggle to grasp what happened in Manipur. To put it into perspective, imagine if illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, backed by unscrupulous politicians, laid claim to the sacred Ayodhya or Tirumala hills. How would the public, especially the devotees of Lord Rama and Lord Venkateswara, react? That is precisely what has transpired in Manipur. Koubru and Thangjing are sacred mountains for the Indigenous people of Manipur, particularly the Meiteis. They are revered as Lord Koubru and Lord Thangjing, with Koubru later becoming associated with Lord Shiva after the advent of Hinduism. For centuries, devotees have undertaken pilgrimages to these mountains, which hold deep religious and historical significance. Meiteis believe that human settlement in Manipur originated from Koubru Peak, gradually expanding to the foothills, valleys, and surrounding hill regions. Similarly, Thangjing is sacred to the people of Southern Manipur, cutting across community lines. Despite their importance, successive governments have failed to protect and develop these sites. In 2020, the government under N. Biren Singh took steps to safeguard these historic locations under the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1976. A notification issued on November 26, 2020, by the Commissioner of Arts and Culture proposed declaring 2 hectares atop Koubru and 4 hectares atop Thangjing as protected sites. These areas fall under the Kanglatongbi-Koubru Reserve Forest and the Churachandpur-Khoupum Protected Forest, making them government land. However, certain Kuki organizations and militants began claiming Koubru as their ancestral land, while villagers around Thangjing opposed the traditional pilgrimage. This has deeply hurt the sentiments of devotees, particularly the Meiteis. Many Kuki settlements in the Koubru range are of recent origin, and an inquiry by the Forest Department found that several villages around Thangjing Hill were illegally established through fraudulent manipulation of Forest Act and procedures. This aggression by Kuki groups has been ongoing for years, as seen in the 2015 attack on peaceful protestors advocating for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Manipur at Moreh. The situation escalated dramatically on May 3, 2023, when Kuki militants and their supporters set fire to Meitei homes and properties in Churachandpur, Moreh, and other Kuki-dominated areas. The violence began with the burning of Meitei homes in Torbung, on the border between Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts. Shri Alfred Arthur, MP, is well aware of these facts but still chose to distort them in Parliament by blaming N. Biren Singh. While the Manipur government bears responsibility, particularly as the then-DGP (a Kuki officer) failed to contain the initial violence in Torbung area despite orders from the Chief Minister, the Government of India is also culpable. The Assam Rifles failed to prevent the burning of Meitei homes in Churachandpur, Moreh, and other Kuki-dominated areas, despite clear orders from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This raises a crucial question: Why did the Manipur DGP ignore the Chief Minister’s orders while the Assam Rifles DG disregarded the Union Home Minister’s directive to protect civilians? This strongly suggests a long-planned and orchestrated attack. Shri Alfred may have his own agenda in advocating for separate budget allocations for the hills and valleys in Parliament. However, he should acknowledge that under N. Biren Singh’s leadership, infrastructure development in Manipur’s hill regions has been unparalleled in the state’s history.
