Pressing, transitions and goals in Canada! After the hiring of Jesse Marsch this week by Canada Soccer , there has been lots of talk about pressing and transitions in the football community. This is THE style of play that we have used for the last 5 years with Alliance United FC in @L1OMens and will give you some insight in how this can look. We went away from the 'possession' based 1-4-3-3 that everyone has been using as the 'best way' to develop players and win games. Many say this is the 'right way' of playing. However, we use the players' abilities and inabilities as the starting point and based on players produced in Canada, within our youth system, this is the way we think will get us the best results and help our players get to the next level. You need to understand youth development in our country to understand what is and what is not being taught to young players. This is not a negative outlook, it is just looking at the reality. Many mistake this style of play as just non-stop pressing and chaos. Yes, these two aspects are important but it is a much more deliberate and planned way of playing that is used to predict where the opposition will play the ball, where the ball can be dictated and what areas the opposition leave open for transitions when they attack. In 2019, I was introduced to Ernst Tanner former Academy Director of Red Bull Salzburg and current Philadelphia Union Sporting Director that has led the club to being one of the top clubs in MLS and arguably the best academies in North America the last few years. Both organisations are known for their pressing and fast transitions in addition to producing top players. He became a mentor to me and gave me insights and education on this style of play. He has changed the way I look at football. Every season we try to recruit players that can play this style that I will describe below and we do not waiver in the way we played. Every game since 2019 Alliance United FC have played either in a 1-4-2-2-2 or a 1-4-4-2 midfield diamond....every game. We have no secrets in how we play. We focus on defending, pressing, forcing teams into mistakes and transition football. It is important to understand that we do not care how much possession we have and we actually want the opposition to have the ball most of the time. Stats in football show that only when a team has the ball 70% or more in a match their is a correlation to winning. Anything less is not correlated to winning in a certain match. In addition, 80% of goals are scored under 5 passes or less and under 10 seconds when regaining possession. We follow the trend! So, here are some important points based on the video: a) Pressing higher up the pitch when possible. All 11 players are committed to the team intention (principles) and if anybody is not committed and does not contribute to this style of play, they do not play. There is no leeway on this. Either you are in 100% in or you are not. All it takes is one player to not commit and the plan will not work. If we do not win the ball on the high press, everyone is to drop behind the ball as fast as possible to restart the press closer to our goal. b) Based on the opponent's scouting we press certain players and decide if will press closer to the sideline and 'pin' the player to the sideline or we dictate the passes and dribbles centrally and 'surround' the player to win the ball in central positions. We also decide if we will sometimes drop lower for the opposition to advance so we can play behind them when winning the ball. This is done if we scout that the opposition centre-backs are slower than our two strikers. This means we will 'outrun' them in the space they leave behind. c) When winning the ball we want to exploit space behind their backline as the priority which means that a player(s) need to be passing options behind the backline and preferably centrally which is closer to the goal, players winning the ball has to look to play the ball to the player furthest up the pitch. Possession is not a priority but scoring goals as fast as possible is. d) When winning the ball we stay as central as possible with passes and dribbling. We use the width of the penalty area (44 yards) as the preferable dimension when transitioning. We want to stay within this width. The wider the team plays the ball, the more time the opposition has to block the middle. PLAY AS VERTICALLY AS POSSIBLE! The emphasis is to get the ball to the two strikers and play 1v1 against the CBs. e) We know that most youth players grow up playing against a 1-4-3-3 which means there is one central striker meaning the centre-backs one back press and one can cover. Against 2 strikers this is not possible and many centre-backs do not have the ability to play 1v1 with space behind them. They are not taught the cues to step and press or drop to protect space behind them. They are never taught at youth level. We exploit this deficiency. e) All 11 players must get up the pitch to close the spaces if we lose the ball from our attacking transition so the opposition cannot transition against us and we can counter-press. f) A goal is the best outcome based on the objective of attacking but at the minimum we want to get a shot on goal from a transition. This is a quick overview of a different way of playing football that Canada will see with the Men's National Team.

This report by Sky News Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir is heartbreaking yet typical for both poor Zimbabweans and their counterparts in South Africa, who are pitted against each other by South African politicians who use the immigration crisis to explain the stagnant South African economy and lack of jobs for poor and uneducated South Africans. My unsolicited advice to the South African Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber is that he is dealing with a political problem, not a technical one. My advice to ordinary South Africans is that mass deportations are a waste of time and your taxpayers money. Those deported today will return tomorrow, thanks to your border officials who demand bribes, it is a revolving door, and the porous border. I can get a bus full of people without passports to come into South Africa through the border not the river or back to Zimbabwe through the border again, thanks to the corruption on the South African side at the BeitBridge border post. This issue will not go away unless and until the ANC realises that it will lose power in 2029 and local government votes in 2026 for supporting ZANUPF’s corrupt rule. As I said, the real problem lies in the political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe, which the ANC has nurtured for decades at the expense of its own survival and its own people. The ANC risks losing power if it continues to babysit ZANUPF, this will happen in 2029 if nothing changes and the economy continued to stagnate. You do not hear of a Zambian illegal immigrant problem in South Africa because there is no political crisis in Zambia. Poorer countries than Zimbabwe, like Malawi, Botswana, and Namibia, have never caused an illegal immigrant crisis in South Africa because they also don’t have a political crisis which manifests through thrift economies. The last time you saw an opposition South African politician at the Limpopo River addressing this issue was during election season, when Gayton McKenzie and his gang were shouting and chanting “Abahambe,” at Limpopo River. They got the votes and have never been back since—that is politicians for you. You will see them again before the 2026 local government elections, using the same gimmick, “Abahambe.” Voters enjoy being played and being made to feel good through empty promises and lies. Gayton is now in government and cabinet, the right place to bring up the Zimbabwe political crisis because it is the root cause of illegal immigration. Has he done that? So, there are three things to take away from this ongoing immigration crisis; 1. that mass deportations will never work, as they are simply another avenue for bribes; this is not a technical problem but a political one. 2. Zimbabweans must also understand that the immigration debate in South Africa is based on real concerns from ordinary South Africans, as big businesses prefer illegal Zimbabwean labour to locals because they are underpaid and not unionised as illegal immigrants. So don’t insult uneducated South Africans saying they don’t want the waiting and cleaning jobs, they do, but they can’t take them at such low wages caused by cheap labour provided by illegal immigrants. I am in South African for a week attending to business meetings, today I took a drive to Pretoria to talk to Zimbabweans who are affected by the crisis back home and are seeking leave to live in South Africa after watching the Sky News report. I saw Zimbabwean criminals working in cahoots with local criminals taking money from unsuspecting Zimbabwean immigrants who want to regularise their paperwork. This is not even corruption, they were taking money from these poor Zimbabwean people lying that they can expedite their applications and then disappearing. I saw it with my own eyes, I don’t understand how a Zimbabwean can come to South Africa and steal from another Zimbabwean who is also struggling. But they do it, and the women selling mealies outside the Home Affairs offices in Pretoria told me that they do it daily, where is the police? These criminals lie to these people that they are agents and they can take their papers inside, they even call someone pretending that you are speaking to a South African Home Affairs officials. If the South African police go there tomorrow, they will be there! But as I said, all these are symptoms of a bigger and real problem, the political crisis in Zimbabwe, unless if it is resolved, South Africans who are not yet born will still be faced with the same crisis of illegal immigration decades to come! Zimbabwe is no longer a foreign policy issue for the South African government, it is now a demestic policy issue because thes illegal immigrants need healthcare, your law says you must provide it. One unanswered question is why is the ANC doing something that is killing it slowly, the more illegal immigrants are in South Africa, the more it loses its once tight grip on power resulting in GNUs and eventually outright loss? Why?

Using Claude Fable 5, I built a model that predicts the entire 2026 FIFA world cup.. every single game, not just the final.. so let me break the whole thing down. what it does, how it works, and exactly how i built it.. #1 First what it does: it predicts all 104 games of the tournament. not just who lifts the trophy, but every group match, every knockout, the full path from the round of 32 to the final.. everything lands in one dashboard: > group stage, every match with each team's win % and the chance of a draw > standings, how all 12 groups are projected to finish > bracket, the full knockout tree with each team's odds of advancing > champion odds, who's most likely to actually win it all and it doesn't freeze after one prediction. the moment a real game is played, it locks that result in and re-runs everything around it. so the odds move live as the tournament goes, week by week you watch favorites rise and contenders collapse. #2. How it works: the core idea is simple. the model only ever predicts one thing, a single match. the real trick is the repetition. it learns from decades of match history, then plays the whole tournament out from the first game to the final, tens of thousands of times. each run it records who advanced and who won. do that enough and you stop getting one guess and start getting real odds, one team lifts the trophy in maybe 14% of the runs, another in 9%, and so on. #3. So, how i built it ? i didn't hand-write most of the code. i broke the project into 4 pieces, described each one to fable, and let it build while i focused on getting the football logic exactly right. - The data every international match going back over a century, around 50,000 games, plus each team's elo rating, which is the truest measure of strength, and the official 2026 schedule. garbage data means garbage predictions, so this part mattered most. - The features i turned that raw history into signals the model can learn from, the elo gap between the two teams, recent form, goals scored and conceded, and a home boost for the hosts, usa, canada and mexico. - The model for each match it predicts the expected goals for both sides, then turns that into win, draw and loss probabilities plus a likely scoreline. that's what feeds the simulation. - The tournament engine this was the hard part. the 2026 world cup is brand new, 48 teams, 12 groups, a round of 32 that's never existed before, and 8 "best third-placed" teams that slot into the bracket by a fixed fifa table. even the group tiebreakers changed this year, head to head now counts before goal difference. get any of it wrong and the whole bracket falls apart, so i built it carefully and tested the format until it was exact, then wrapped it in a simulation loop that plays the tournament out tens of thousands of times. and the last piece, the live part. as real results come in, they get locked, and only the unplayed games get re-simulated. that's what makes it a living model instead of a one-time prediction. all of it outputs to a clean dashboard you can actually read and screenshot.. right now, before kickoff, it already has a clear favorite to lift the trophy.. 👀 btw who's your pick to win the 2026 world cup?

Coach Morris is a straight shooter, no question, and so let's follow that lead. So, we mentioned in the pregame yesterday that if yesterday did not have a good presentation, all of the OSU fans who feel jaded with what happened to Coach Gundy would come out in force. And that has happened. Here's the deal! He's not our coach anymore. There's no need to get back into the weeds of that situation on social media, but if you want a lengthy segment on why things had to happen, check out my postgame reactions on YouTube. So, if you're one of those people, here's my question for you... What do we do now? Think of it as an umpire and a manager arguing. When does it stop and everyone move on to the next play? You can't argue for the rest of eternity, and there comes a point where, even if you're right, you're doing more harm than good. So, again, are you going to continue to be a fan, or are you going to take your ball and go home after one game in a new era with 92 new players? As per Coach Morris, it was a terrible debut, and there's just no other way to put it. There was nothing about yesterday that will motivate OSU fans to be excited about this new brand, or Coach Morris in particular. And that's disappointing because he's a terrific coach. I still believe he's 1000% the right guy for OSU, and he's going to get this program turned around. But that's only if we let him, which means not jumping off a cliff after one game. It's okay to be so blown up right now that you can't see straight. That just means you care! But don't take it past that. Leave the "let's fire a guy after one game" out of the equation. It's crazy talk, and it's based on emotion, not sound analysis. And it does OSU absolutely NO good! But back to the game. We played slow, we were lethargic, we looked disinterested, and anything but confident. And the play calling, IMO, was in a "phone booth" way more than I thought we'd see. We didn't stretch the field much, and we didn't throw to our tight end in the middle of the field like I hoped we'd see return to an OSU offense. We didn't hit receivers in position to get yards after the catch, specifically with them moving vertically so they can have a head of steam, and we threw sideways way too much. We didn't block, and our RBs didn't bust their own holes. Mestemaker either held on to the ball too long, dumped it too fast, threw off the back foot, or heaved up late balls across his body while scrambling against drop-8 coverage. Our defensive performance in the 1st half was probably the only somewhat of a silver lining. But it too gave up over 100 yards rushing in the 2nd half to a team that won 4 games last year with a G6 schedule. They also gave up over 6.4 yards per play, while we averaged only 4.3. So I can't count that as an overall silver lining either. We turned the ball over 3 times, didn't win a 50/50 ball right before the half in man coverage, and then had a stupid penalty from one of my favorite players that gave them a 2nd chance to punch in a touchdown, which they did. We needed momentum, and special teams could have been an area where we could have gained some, but we didn't do anything there either. This was a disaster ALL the way around! There's just no other way to analyze this. But it's one game, just the 1st game of an Era that I still believe is going to be successful. And, to make sure we're ALL accountable, I have over-hyped this offense and didn't see any way that Tulsa would stop us. That's on me... My bad! I eat that the same way Drew will eat his performance, or Coach Morris, or anyone else. This team can still end up being what he hoped it would, but obviously the timeline has changed. So, now we have to transition into a "growth" mindset, which, TBH, is disappointing when you pay the QB $3.5 million dollars. But it is what it is! See ya' next week at Boone Pickens! Wonderful and very friendly atmosphere at Selhurst Park Crystal Palace F.C. yesterday for the final game of the season. Wonderful to see Ebere back at the ground where he got a wonderful reception. Congratulations to Arsenal on lifting the trophy for the first time in 22 years. However, I do have an idea for the Premier League …. As Palace season ticket holders we were told under no circumstances were we to swap our tickets and let Arsenal fans have them. Indeed, if we were found to have done that we would be denied season tickets for next year. Completely understandable as I’m sure there were safety concerns. Not surprising though that we were actually surrounded by Arsenal fans pretending to be Palace fans by either wearing Palace shirts or plain white tops for the match only to take them off and replace them with Arsenal shirts they had in their pockets at the end of the game! Now I’m not complaining about what the fans did at all. They were wonderful, friendly and even joined in on “Glad All Over” and applauded the Palace team, players and Oliver Glasner at the end of the game. We got lots of “Good luck in Leipzig” wishes from them too. It was a really friendly atmosphere. But I completely understand their frustration at how hard it was to get tickets for many who were lifelong Arsenal supporters. Chatting with them they said that 2400 seats available for sale. 1200 kept by Arsenal for themselves so only 1200 seats available for the match where they were going to be presented with the trophy. No wonder lots of fans did all they could to get tickets any way possible. So here is a suggestion for the Premier League for next season when working out the fixtures….. Realistically there are probably only 4 or 5 teams who will possibly win the league next year. So why not make sure all those teams have a home game as their final game of the season? In that way the tens of thousands of supporters who go to every home game will have the opportunity to see their team lift the trophy and actually be there rather than having to watch it later on TV? Surely that can’t be too difficult to arrange and if all the potential winners have a home game as their final match there is no unfair advantage towards any of those sides? What do you think? This will be a long post, Special Megamix featuring all my best clips from 2022 to 2026 My journey began back in 2019 when I was 13. I moved from Fortnite to Apex when it launched. I actually disliked the game at first because it was the "Fortnite Killer," but my friends dragged me into it. I was instantly hooked, realized I had a gift for it, and started the grind. I peaked as Thailand #7 Bangalore in Season 1, Reached Predator for the first time in Season 2, Solo'd to Predator in Season 5 Split 1, First Predator in Thailand in Season 5 Split 2, and was Thailand's #1 for multiple consecutive seasons from 12 to 21, Peaked #9 PC in Season 16 Split 2, Became the first Thai to reach #1 PC and the only one to ever hold #3 both splits. I am the only one in Thailand to ever hold 1 digit more than once (3 times) My pro career started in ALGS 2022 Split 1. I had my best performance ever, pulling off a 1v18 win as a solo in Pro League with 13 kills and an insane end-game clutch (highest at the time for ALGS). But then in 2023 during Split 1 Pro League I was falsely suspended for 1 year for cheating without any explanation or support whatsoever from EA, then It’s repeated every year since. My latest ban is scheduled to be lifted on 1st August 2027, My biggest heartbreak was when I won EWC 2024 Qualifier with Lightning Unicorn, only to get disqualified a few weeks later, but since EA refused to communicate nor give any response to my appeals and ALGS Admins had no authority to help me and told that this is "between me and EA" I had to watch my team play EWC with a stand-in and with rushed schedule. My account started getting falsely banned in 2024 for cheating and denied every appeals but I didn't give up and continued playing as if nothing happens on other account and repeatedly got banned again in 2025 and recently few days ago. What truly baffles me is I played on 2 separate account (One Predator which I played on more) but only one that was banned is the Master account which was Gold 2 prior to me playing on it, I can only speculate about why it was flagged; one possibility is the unusually fast climb and mass reports. My plan now is to just secure Pred for this split, take a long hiatus, and come back next year to play in Pro League (IF EA doesn't randomly ban me again). Until then, enjoy the clips. Coffee and a kitten! You can snuggle up with a feline friend at this N.J. cat café. | Paige Britt, NJ dot com Ben Hudes, 21, and Dora Gorvorko, 23, are making it their mission to bring a cat café to South Jersey. The couple are DIYing a space in Oaklyn that will feature self-serve coffee, packaged food items, and most importantly, cats. Calico Cat Café will offer a space for people to escape to, whether that be to study, read, play boardgames, or do crafts all while surrounded by feline friends. A recent graduate from Rowan University in Glassboro, Hudes is using his entrepreneurship degree and previous marketing experience to guide the pair through this journey they’ve embarked on together. Calico Cat Café has quickly garnered a following on Instagram by posting daily videos of updates to the building. Since launching on July 1, their account has grown to over 6,000 followers. Before the couple was flooded with messages of people willing to volunteer their time and services, they planned on doing all the construction themselves. They began by ripping up the carpet and cleaning up the floors, a task they admit they would still be doing if it weren’t for the help of others. Hudes noted they’ve probably had around 100 people in the space so far. From construction workers to artists, the unopened café sees volunteers coming and going throughout the day, devoting their time and energy to the mission. So far, the walls, ceiling, and tables are covered in various paintings of cats from local artists, marking each tile with a unique look and feel. Gorvorko explained that they plan on keeping about 10 to 12 cats in the space, dividing the café into a food and seating area and a lounge section where customers can interact with the cats. The couple partnered with Homeward Bound adoption, so all cats in the café will be available for adoption. Since the café will operate on a self-service model for beverages, Hudes wants to partner with local coffee shops to feature different weekly brews. The couple have two cats of their own, Couscous and Chicken. While Gorvorko has been a life-long lover of the cuddly creatures, Hudes converted a little later in life. After a trip to Hawaii where they visited a cat café, they fell in love with the idea. “When we moved in together and she brought her cat, I immediately fell in love with cats,” said Hudes. As a kid, Gorvorko only had the opportunity to see cats at places like PetSmart and would visit the stores just to hang out with them. She hopes through the café she will be able to teach kids how to interact with animals and the boundaries of interacting with some cats. “Because a lot of kids, they go and adopt a cat, and they don’t know how to interact with the cat properly and they expect to interact with it like a cartoon, like play with them and they can be as rough as they want,” said Gorvorko. “But I feel like in a cat café, they have the chance to learn and understand how a cat feels and how it reacts to them,” Hudes and Gorvorko encourage other people with ideas for small businesses to take the leap of faith like they did, even though they didn’t have it all figured out just yet. “I think so many people have plans and then they just let them fester and sit and then they don’t actually act on it because they don’t know how things are going to turn out,” said Hudes. “But we just kind of went into this knowing we had the ability and just started. $How I Build My Teams I always liked the idea of ‘possession football’: - Control the game. - A tool to develop players. - The opponent can’t score without the ball. But I built it the wrong way: “Keep the ball. Find a gap to attack.” This turned into “side-to-side” passing. It was boring and ineffective. \ The idea. So, I flipped the idea: Instead of controlling to attack, we attack to control. Play as vertical as possible (while maintaining control). If not possible, pass back. Avoid sideways passes. For better connections and counter-press, we use a vertical, narrow structure: These simple decisions lead to short, vertical, and diagonal passes. This is what I call 'vertical possession' football. \ Make it work. The idea is simple. The execution is not. Over the years, I’ve worked to close the gap between vision and reality. (watch example below) My goal is to get closer to my vision every day. But as Vince Lombardi said: “Perfection is unattainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” Here’s my plan to 'catch excellence': 1. Build it my way. Ignore opinions. Opinions lead to conformity. We reduce our philosophy to its essence—and build from there. Everything else is a distraction. 2. Stick to it. We limit ourselves to core principles, and stick to them. When there’s a problem, we don’t change the idea—we improve its execution. 3. Eliminate waste. Building a style of play is like carving a statue. You start with a block of marble and chip away everything unnecessary. All that’s left is the sculpture. We do the same. We cut every unnecessary touch and step: - Fewer touches mean we need less time and space. We have more space to be creative. - The simpler it gets, the more recognizable the style. 4. Obsess over the players. We don’t adapt to opponents. We focus on our players. That's what matters in the long run. When our ideas work, we can compete against anyone. 5. Develop technical and creative players as a by-product. - Possession: Many touches to refine technique. - Vertical: No “easy” sideways passes. Learn to play in tight spaces. - Control: Avoid hectic football. Control the ball to make deliberate decisions. 6. One Training Structure. We compress our philosophy into one structure. Then, we repeat it every session. We make our style of play a habit. And we develop the tools to execute it. 7. Master a Few Exercises. We repeat a small set of core games over and over. We focus on improving execution, not on new drills. The better we execute, the faster we get to our vision. 8. Bottleneck Coaching. We can’t predict what happens, so we don’t over-plan. Instead, we prepare for what might happen. This liberates our coaching: Rather than sticking to pre-planned coaching points, we solve the most critical issue—the bottleneck. 9. Competition Drives Development. Games are the core of our training. Players compete to win. They force each other to get better and better, session after session. 10. Positive Team Culture. I used to react with anger when things didn’t go right. And yes, it can work in the short term. But to build something great, players must stay on the path for a long time. I owe no one an explanation but I'm going to do it. I'm doing it not because of the insult I am receiving, that I am greedy or I don't know what I'm doing for leaving a 14 million naira cash out, but because of only one thing in particular, and that is because of the few comments I have read. I noticed some people are actually saying it is an edit which makes it a fake post to get engagement or the particular game belongs to another punter. Few of my followers who know me very well and can testify that my games are real because most times I do giveaway, not big money though, but something for breakfast and almost every week they get a token from my winnings. And they know I like playing less than 3 odds. I only play a running ticket once in a blue moon. A particular Guy after seeing my games called me a sporty agent, after getting 3K giveaway from me back to back during the weekends he never called me that name again. I will make a video of this particular game and allow everybody to see that I did not cash out either partially or fully. A real gamer that sees this game and checks each option very well will be certain that the last game will come. Admin Post: My butt is sore from the 7 hour drive through the mountains to a dog show. I feel incredibly unprepared and am wondering why I thought this was a good idea. This was actually supposed to be part of the journey to take my dog Kuno's ashes to the ocean, but I decided that with moving into the house, it wasn't the right time to go away that long. I'm not physically or mentally prepared for that much driving right now. I'm pretty worn out with the move and there's still a lot to do. So I decided to just do this show for now, and I can take his ashes next month. I probably would have skipped this show, but entry fees aren't refundable, and I have a friend that entered her dog and booked an Airbnb to do the show with me. So here we are! The drive through the mountains was beautiful but I caught myself wishing I was able to walk so I could take Chesnyy hiking in nature. I have to be careful not to go to far into that kind of thinking. It's easy to start focusing on what I can't do and start to feel really crappy. Instead I focus on the fact that me, a double amputee with chronic health conditions, and my rottweiler drove further from home than I've been since becoming a wheelchair user. And we're going to compete in our first outdoor rally obedience trials! We didn't make it in time for the practice rounds, but we did a little training and she was good. I don't have big expectations this weekend. With everything that's been going on I haven't put in nearly the amount of time training that I should have. I haven't even worked her over jumps outdoors or on grass! Grass means there's things to sniff, so that might be an issue. I also found myself really struggling to back up the wheelchair. The grass was just long enough that the castors didn't want to turn around. But we'll figure it out. For now, we need to sleep. Our first class is at 8 and she's going to need exercise first!
