Unlawful Detention of BYC Leaders and Denial of Access to Families and Legal Counsel Constitute Grave Human Rights Violations On June 8th, leaders of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) were unlawfully transferred from Hudda District Prison in Quetta to the Civil Lines Police Station on a 10-day remand. Since their transfer, they have not been seen, and authorities have denied access to both their families and legal counsel. This complete lack of transparency has raised serious concerns about their safety, including fears of potential torture in custody. In response, the families of the detained leaders gathered in front of the Civil Lines Police Station to demand their legal and moral right to visit their loved ones. The Superintendent of Police informed them that no meetings would be permitted without a court order. However, even after obtaining the necessary court directives, police have continued to deny access. Only the mothers of Dr. Mahrang Baloch and Beebow Baloch have been granted brief visits, while all other family members and legal representatives remain barred. In protest against these illegal and authoritarian actions, the families have initiated a peaceful sit-in outside the Civil Lines Police Station. We urgently call on national and international human rights organizations to intervene and hold the responsible authorities accountable. The stateโ€™s unconstitutional actions and continued targeting of human rights defenders must not go unchecked. Immediate attention and action are imperative to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of the detained BYC leaders. #ReleaseBYCLeaders

Congratulations to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu Dr Mohamed Muizzu for Setting a World Record with the Longest Standing Press Conference President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, made history on May 3, 2025 โ€” World Press Freedom Day โ€” by delivering what is believed to be the longest official press conference held while standing at a presidential podium. President Muizzu began the press conference at 10:00 AM on May 3rd, and continued answering questions until 00:54 AM on May 4th, standing throughout the entire event except for short breaks during prayer times. The press session lasted nearly 15 hours, making it a remarkable demonstration of endurance, transparency, and commitment to democratic values. Held at the Presidentโ€™s Office, the conference saw President Muizzu respond to a wide array of questions from local and international journalists โ€” some of whom asked over 30 questions each. The President addressed every topic with patience, clarity, and respectful engagement. Previously, the world record for the longest press conference was believed to be held by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who conducted a 14-hour press marathon in 2019, seated at a table among reporters. In contrast, President Muizzu remained at the official presidential podium throughout, making his achievement not only longer in duration but also more physically demanding. This extraordinary event stands as a milestone for the Maldives and an inspiring example of press freedom and democratic dialogue in action.
