Western Railway is undertaking a major safety-driven encroachment removal operation at Garib Nagar, Bandra (East), today i.e 19th May 2026, after due legal process extending over several years. The following facts may kindly be noted: 1. The matter is not sudden or arbitrary. Proceedings under the Public Premises Act were initiated before 2017 and eviction orders were passed on 27.11.2017. 2. The issue has undergone extensive judicial scrutiny over nearly nine years, including proceedings before the Honโ€™ble Bombay High Court and Honโ€™ble Supreme Court. 3. The latest orders of the Honโ€™ble Bombay High Court dated 29.04.2026, subsequently upheld in further proceedings as well as before the Honโ€™ble Supreme Court, have permitted removal of unauthorized encroachments, while protecting identified eligible structures. 4. Western Railway is fully complying with judicial directions. Structures identified for protection through the joint survey process are not being disturbed. 5. The action is being undertaken primarily in the railway safety zone adjacent to active railway tracks, where unauthorized habitation poses serious risks to human life and train operations. 6. This railway area stretch is operationally critical for augmentation of rail capacity in Mumbai. Removal of encroachments is essential for railway safety, operational flexibility and future infrastructure expansion, including additional train services. 7. The proposed works are linked to enhancement of carrying capacity on one of the busiest rail corridors in the country and will facilitate introduction of additional long-distance train services for passengers across India. 8. Railway land cannot remain perpetually encroached, be it anywhere, and more so in safety-sensitive operational areas. At the same time, Railway administration is acting strictly within the framework of law and court directions. 9. New York and Chicago are two big hubs in the eastern US. Distance: 800 miles or 1300km roughly. Same as Delhi - Mumbai in India. There are 3 ways to travel. You can fly. You can drive. Or you can take a train. Fastest train is Amtrak lakeshore which takes ~19hrs. Driving takes 14hrs but you need to rest as well. I love trains. So I decided to take Amtrak. Their sleeper class. Took a roomette. First of all - American trains run on standard gauge. Which is smaller than Indian broad gauge. The compartments are smaller. And the trains are less comfortable. They shake way more. Second - Americans really donโ€™t understand passenger trains. This train left late and then sat on a random station for 30mins. Itโ€™s already running late and usually reaches 2-3 even 5hrs delayed. And this is supposed to be a premium train. Culprit ? Freight. Americans donโ€™t have dedicated fright tracks. The train btw is full. Which means people do want to travel on it. All sorts of people. Old, young. Business travellers. Only 2 coaches are sleeper - rest are coach (chaircars). Then the train reaches Albani and has to merge with another train from boston. Whole process takes 30-45mins. Can you believe a major train just sitting off a closed platform, cutting off its engines and adding more bogies in the middle of its journey in India ? The train had power supply for 30 mins cause itโ€™s powered by diesel engines. Which are cut off. Diesel engine. Yes. The entire route except parts of NYC is non electric. Itโ€™s all old school diesel. It slowly chugs after and stops everywhere it can. Like an old Indian passenger train. The cabin is decent as it should be for a $700 price. The food is microwaved prepackaged stuff - ie very bad. Thereโ€™s a coach attendant but he doesnโ€™t care. Iโ€™ve travelled extensively in Rajdhani - and I can tell you itโ€™s high luxury compared to this. And for 1/10th the price. The food, the cabin - all are superior. The reason Iโ€™m bringing this up is not to say Indians know it better. Not at all. But that even the most advanced cultures get it wrong. Even the most sorted out people - the one most advanced in tech - somehow donโ€™t know how to run cross-country trains at scale. And this is not even a cross country trip. Hardly 1/4th of it. So what did they get wrong ? They stopped building. Upgrading. Improving. They do a few things right. Like making good highways. Take that learning. They do many things wrong. Like this train. Theyโ€™ve stopped building. No dedicated freight tracks. No magnificent new stations. No high speed rail. The only lesson to learn is to not make that mistake. Build. And keep building. This year, Ukraine has a good harvest - in some areas, better than expected: around 64 million tonnes of grain, including roughly 23 million tonnes of wheat, 32 million tonnes of corn, and more than 5 million tonnes of barley. Together with oilseeds, the seasonโ€™s export potential exceeds 50 million tonnes. The problem is harvesting it: Russian forces continue to attack farmers and agricultural machinery. Then there is the challenge of getting the harvest out through the ports of Greater Odesa. Russia is striking them with unprecedented intensity: more than 180 attacks on port infrastructure in the first half of the year, compared with around 150 during all of last year. In a single month, 28 civilian vessels were attacked. As a result, around 90% of shipping operators have suspended port calls; foreign vessels have not entered major ports for weeks; and the largest terminals have halted purchases. The next problem is storage. If the wheat cannot be exported now, grain elevators will be full right through September-November, when the harvest of 32 million tonnes of corn begins. For Ukrainian farmers, this creates a squeeze: domestic prices are falling because there is a surplus of grain with nowhere to go, while global prices are rising at the very same moment. Additional pressure comes from the energy sector: Russian strikes on Ukraineโ€™s power grid and fuel infrastructure are driving up the cost of drying and transporting grain, just as Ukrainian strikes on refineries are doing the same for Russian farmers. The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna on Wednesday, June 24, for allegedly stabbing a co-passenger to death inside a moving first-class compartment of a Mumbai local train. A resident of the Mira-Bhayandar suburb, Suvarna was a regular commuter on the Western Line network. According to railway police investigators, Suvarna did not have a known prior criminal record matching this profile, but he was carrying a large knife inside his personal bag on the night of the incident.
