BURKINA FASO'S INSTITUTE OF BLACK PEOPLES In the 1980s, Thomas Sankara dreamed of creating a world-class centre dedicated to Black history and culture. It was to be called the Institute of Black Peoples, a project which Sankara took very seriously. In 1986, he took concrete steps to prepare for the creation of this institute. The following year, he was assassinated, and nothing substantial came out of his idea. That is, until the current president of Burkina Faso, President Ibrahim Traoré, took the torch. On 30 June 2026, the Institute, now relaunched under the name Farafina Institute of Black Peoples, appointed its steering committee. The committee includes some of the most prominent faces in the French-speaking Pan-African movement, such as Nathalie Yamb and Franklin Nyamsi. The president of the Institute is former Prime Minister Dr Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela, who was involved in the Democratic People's Revolution under Thomas Sankara. During that time, Kyelem de Tambela was studying in French; however, he organised a diasporic cell of the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution. Burkina Faso has been working to forge closer relationships with Africans across the continent and the diaspora since Traoré came to power. The country is a part of the Pan-African Alliance of Sahel States Confederation, which seeks to unify Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. In November 2025, Burkina Faso welcomed a large delegation of diasporic Africans from the United States and the Caribbean, to whom the country granted permanent residency status.

Built on 100 hectares of land under the leadership of revolutionary Pan-African former president Thomas Sankara in 1984 and opened in 1986, the prison focuses on rehabilitation through teaching crucial job skills, primarily agriculture, the largest field of work in the country. President Traoré is the first head of state to visit the prison. Burkina Faso is thinking critically about how to create a new model for its justice system, built upon repair rather than punishment. On 8 November, 2024, the country passed a new law allowing judges to sentence people convicted of crimes to one month of community service in place of three months in prison. Community service was defined as agricultural production, livestock or poultry farming, and factory work. Prisoners also have a legal right to one week off for health, family, social, or other personal reasons. President Traoré clearly recognises that those incarcerated in these facilities are not the enemies of the people. Rather, it is the imperialists and their lackeys who constitute the true threat to the nation. The Ghanaian Alhadji Yakub Ayana completed a journey of over 950 kilometers on foot from Accra to Ouagadougou in 17 days, to deliver a powerful message of Pan-African unity and support for the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, and his sovereignist policies. Dressed in an attire made from pieces of the flags of the 54 African countries, the Pan-Africanist walker Alhadji Yakub Ayana braved wind, sun, hunger, cold, thirst, and fatigue to preach African unity along the Accra-Ouagadougou axis. Setting off on October 10th, he arrived in Ouagadougou on October 27, 2025, at Revolution Square. Visibly moved, he gave thanks to God before bowing before the monument of the Flame of the Revolution, lit by President Thomas Sankara. “It wasn’t easy, but in the name of love for Africa, I did it. My feet were sometimes swollen, but thanks to the medical assistance of the ambulance that accompanied me throughout the journey, everything went well,” he said. “We are a rich continent that needs unity to develop and shine in the world. If we succeed, it will be white people themselves who will come to try their luck immigrating to Africa in search of El Dorado,” he affirmed. For him, the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore embodies the African leader who works for the interests of his people and of Africa. That is why he warns the imperialists who would try to take his life. “We want to issue a warning to the West not to harm our President Ibrahim Traore because we often hear rumors that there are plans to harm him. But we are warning them today: they shouldn't dare,” added Adams Abubakar Alhassan, a member of the organizing committee. During his journey, Mr. Ayana was accompanied by nine people, including medical personnel in a fully equipped ambulance, security agents, and supporters. Awa Ilboudo, a Burkinabè woman born and residing in Ghana, and a fervent supporter of the Sankara revolution, did not hesitate to join Alhadji Ayana to express her admiration for Captain Ibrahim Traore, whom she considers a worthy successor to President Sankara. The Pan-Africanist walker hopes to meet with President Ibrahim Traore, Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, His Majesty the Mogho Naaba Baongho, and religious leaders. Mr. Ayana arrives in Burkina Faso at a time when more than 700 people of African descent and members of the diaspora are staying, seeking to reconnect with their roots. Breaking 🚨- On National TV last night, Niger National Police announced that around 7pm local time, a van moving into the French embassy was caught having some furniture and Burkina Faso’s 🇧🇫 military uniforms. They counted 16 uniforms and 21 T-shirts all belonging to our military. The equipment was seized and taken to the headquarters of the Gendarmerie. As a reminder, since Emmanuel Macron refused to recall his ambassador Sylvain Itté , after the 48h ultimatum, the military ordered his deportation if he steps out of the embassy. This is why there’s always a permanent police checkpoint in front their embassy. Now, the question is: why is Burkina Faso’s military uniforms found in a van in Niger 🇳🇪 going into the French embassy ? Remember Mali 🇲🇱 accused France 🇫🇷 of training and arming the terrorists ? This is what led to the escalation of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The issue even went to the UN Security Council in August 2022, where Mali asked for an audition to show evidence of their claim and they never got it. Not a surprise because the imperialists protect each other’s backs.
